►About the Game -
In the bounds of darkness hiding from light...
In the soul of every nightmare...
In the deepest ravines that lay beneath our world...
In the chasmic rifts of time...
A terror awaits in a cycle that challenges the very fabric of society, beneath which it lays dormant. It sleeps down in the dark, waiting for the day that it shall rise up and return to power.
True horror cannot die. It only waits for the right moment of return.
Dragged into a dark conspiracy, explore and survive your way through the beginning of the end for the nation of Australia. Use your wits and instinct to stay alive in this 2000s-style first person liminal exploratory horror shooter set down under during the 1990s.
AMYGDALA: Prelude takes the player on a journey spanning over 25 areas set in the great southern land, spanning from a typical Australian city to treacherous costal areas, and all the way down to the unseen depths of the ocean. Fight a variety of horrfying enemies, ranging from mutated huntsman spiders the size of newspapers up to monsterous hybrid humans that can decapitate with one fell swoop.

6:25 - CHRIS, How could you, out of all people... destroyed your most precious thing!?
The cut to the empty chair after the toilet broke absolutely killed me 💀🤣
He broke his most sacred toilet tenet. Thou shall not break the crapper.
“If you want to say goodbye to Australia..” 😂😂😂 I will never get sick of your intros, CJU. Thanks for the laughs as always 😝
Thank you so much for playing through my first game! Your playthrough was really insightful and fun to watch, and I certainly learned a lot, and will be adding some improvements and tweaks to the demo soon. A few things in the game, unfortunately as is the case with a lot of games, are rushed to meet a time constraint. A lot of things had to be chopped and changed at the last second, as well as the flow of the map which explains the weird decisions such as there being so many guns in the house, and that meant re-recording lines, changing plot elements and things quite rapidly (This is why the introduction to the cultists is remarkably lacklustre), and the gunfighting is a bit weak at this point. There is a lot more planned for this year and I'd say by the end of this year, it's going to look and play like a whole new game. Currently we have 30 maps for it done so there's plenty to see and do coming up!
We're trying to find more programmers, modelers and a writer for the project so we can spend some serious TLC on the AI and combat systems, as well as the inventory/journal/objective system. An arachnophobia mode is planned for the giant spiders as well so people with arachnophobia can play and they will be replaced with slime blobs!
I've listened to every word you've said in your video and will be using it to make tweaks and improvements to the game. Thank you again for playing, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!
This looks like so much fun! Wonderful job! Very impressive for a first game. I'm curious: can you smash everything up?
@@OhGeeWillickersMister Thanks so much! For the final release, there should be lots of destructibles in the environment to make full use of the source engines physics system.
Your game looked like a heap of fun to me and your responsiveness to his CJU's critiques fills me with confidence that this game will be a lot of fun upon release.
@@thevalleyard3942Thanks for the kind words! I'm making sure that I watch every video, read every steam discussion, and read every comment. I take everything that people have to say about as critique on how I can make the game that people are hoping for.
Replace the spiders with scorpions and crabs :3
at 6:25 was the best part of the game, let's be honest 😂 also CJU's reaction after saying "looks like someone tried to fix this" -- NOPE not anymore 🤣
Lmao 😂🤣💀 That's what the toilets in half-life 2 do in the nova prospect area 😂
Chris: So if u wanna say goodbye to Australia.
Me in Australia,
Me: * Nervous laughter *😅
I love the fish professor. Such a fun character. It'd worth playing through the full game just for him, but this seems like an interesting game overall.
Really glad to hear you like him! He'll be playing quite a prominent role in the game and you'll see more of him to come.
As an Australian I can confirm that the "little" Huntsman spiders at 10:29 are actually accurate. Speaking from personal experience 😅 Edit: they are mostly harmless and tend to catch and kill any insects and especially other spiders (they're actually great to have around) but fuck me, they're still horrifying all the same.
The best part is yet to come - If the player moves through a dark small tunnel, we're going to add in the ability for them to scurry across the players face/camera from time to time (unless they have arachnophobia mode on).
@@jaspercarmack AUAUUAUGUGGHGHGHGHGHFFFFFFFWHY XD
I liked the nostalgic old-school feel and the interactivity. Also, your glee at smashing random things--or maybe _not_ so random. You seemed to have a vendetta against vases and 🚽🚽 in this demo. 😂 And, of course, dear ol' Dr. Kearnt. How could one not love such an adorable, slimy "hybrid"? Just _look_ at those glassy, bulbous, beseeching eyes! Awwww. 😆
Yes, I definitely want to see more.
I'd love to see more as well. Though, preferably, without the spiders would be nice.
I've actually wondered what it would be like to be mated with a Deep One or "Hybrid"
In fact I've got a two volume set of books called the "Monster Girl Encyclopedia" It's actually quite fun to read... If a little risque. 😉
I'm hoping they publish a Vol. III before I leave. I'd love to get it and there are monsters listed on the wiki for it that aren't in either of the books.
@@shadowjudge921 I can understand the fascination. Generally, however, I prefer my men without tentacles.😆
@@Scriptor13 Takes all sorts to make a world. 🙂
@@shadowjudge921 I'll be putting an Arachnophobia-friendly mode in the game which replaces the spiders with slime blobs, so people with a spider phobia can play and enjoy without having to worry about them.
No tentacles or fish men for me tyvm. If could be like the little mermaid turned human or Splash okay.
Man don't you like when Chris starts asthma laugh when he VANDALIZE his fevorite place, the "toilet". Its a new though. Thanks for playing, mate.
This game looks beautiful. Such nostalgia... I am remembering Legacy of Kain: Defiance(2003) and Tomb Raider Chronicles(2000). In TR you could break windows, computers, vases, etc. And the sound of shattering glass was very gratifying. This is a fantastic game for this rainy Sunday.
The eldritch horror here is... the architecture.
I've actually seen someone post a tick-tock video on Twitter of a Huntmen's spider. It was pretty big and I was glad to learn that it's harmless to humans because I could not ever imagine being around one of those.
They aren't harmless they just don't want to go after folks
The Huntsman is one of the few aussie spiders that's a friend. They do a great job of eating mozzies, moths and other little annoying bugs.
The part where you broke the toilet had me howling 😂
There's something really charming and nostalgic about rustic games like this. There are so many polished AAA games that this is a nice change of pace. You were great as always Chris :)
Me and the other kiwis quietly chuckling as the biggest outlying suburb of New Zealand falls into the sea..... Nah we love you really, Straya x
Lol I got banned off a forum a while back for calling a New Zealander a Kiwi. Apparently it's a racial slur to some people. I don't think they'd survive long considering the Aus/NZ culture of banter.
Ha ha your not wrong!
@@Assdafflabaffit's only to the folks who don't wanna live there
@@Assdafflabaff🥝
Well "African Americans " here in the USA call each other my N****r but yeah I'm not calling them that on here. So yeah, I see TH-cam point of it being a slur.
That monster in the thumbnail looks just ADORABLE. 🤗
Oh my gosh, when you broke the toilet so suddenly, I haven't laughed THAT hard in a long time. Thank you for yet another great video Cju. 🤣
Oh wow, I didn’t realize this was just a demo. I’m really looking forward to the full gameplay.
CJU Games the best horror gaming channel on TH-cam. Hope you get a lot more subscribers this year. Great channel. 👍 from 🇭🇲
I'm not sure that even Cthulhu could beat the creepy crawlies that reside in Australia. Every creature there seems capable of killing anything it comes up against.
" I just headshoted a Deep One..." damn, that was some statement!
Also there always must be something wrong with a protagonist if the first thing he does with a wrench is to impulsively smash everything rather then repair.
Hi Chris! Never wrote here but following you from years, just passing by to say thank you for your work and for suggesting to you "The night is Grey". Just came out, and it's a slow-burn horror. I know you mostly play fps and tps, but if you want give it a try, I found it story really psychologically devastating. And it has his unique art style. So yeah, ty again for your content, I really appreciate it 👻
That was really fun! Great prelude. Now the whole game please. Thank you for playing, CJU!
How did you break your favorite thing: the toilet? Chris you're too funny! 😂🤣
That toilet moment was hilarious. Rough but was okay. Awesome vid Chris.
33:30 i love the fact that he remembers the sinking city. my fav gameplay in this channel.
I love the weird architecture and decor, especially the use of color. It really gives each room a lot of character in a way that's pretty rare in first person horror.
Each room was crafted to be unique in its own way as much as possible, so it didn't just all feel like one big 'generic mansion with beige plaster walls and dark wood trim'. I'm really glad it's noticeable! The decor in particular is heavily inspired by late 1970s / early 1980s Australian interiors, so it makes use of a lot of earthy tones, browns, greens, and florals.
Yeah this has indeed a very old school feel, it actually reminds me of some of the oldest games you played on the channel ! Also it's been a while since you played a game with good old Lovecraftian elements on the channe, those are always fun. As a prologue this was promising, I'm curious about the full game !
😆The long pause before "...I just head-shotted a Deep One..." 😆
This looks pretty fun! Source engine, powerful wrench, and no need for batteries. I'm sold! I'd like to see it on the channel, but I'll play it myself as well!
Love the shirt cj and thank you for the video I absolutely died when you broke the toilet and then wheezed out of your chair!!!! Can't wait for more of this!!!
You breaking that toilet and being stumped was the best thing ever😂😂😂. Also does save you from putting your hands in there for goodies😅. That wrench gave me Half life vibes. Loved the old school look for the game. And it is a fun one as well. Gives the right creep factor and fun at same time. Hide your vases!😂
I love goodie 🤤 win and cheese that all i need champagne some time kiss ❤
Cju broke his favourite thing of all time.... 😮😂
Not sure what I enjoyed more. The surprise upon the destruction of the toilet or the surprise upon immediately blasting that first guy in the hallway. 😂
10:05 - As a reputable scholar of 'Straya lore, I can confirm to you that the spider in the game is NOT realistic. It's too small. The last spider they found in 'Straya destroyed most of Perth and all of Brisbane before the sheep finally ate it.
As the developer, I can confirm 100% - we had to shrink them down so they would fit in the mansion map.
@@jaspercarmack Hey, better to include them than not. They get angry when they're left out of things. Just be careful if you include the sheep - I've yet to see a game properly model the sheer murderousness of 'Strayan sheep. They're responsible for the Japanese being unable to occupy any land there during WWII.
(Real talk, this game looks like a ton of fun! I do agree with a chunk of CJU's criticisms, but jokes about spiders aside you did a great job with the way they move and act. And it's nice to see someone remembering that Deep Ones have an actual civilization of their own, much less remembering that there's stages of hybridization. I'll be watching this one with great interest, and hoping for a full release.)
Professor is so cute, music is kinda sad, and the game is really oldschool and cozy, I liked it. The little spider in a fridge was gorgeous)))
This game felt like a fever dream. The house was so deep and claustrophobic . Fun little game
Funnily enough, the house in this demo is literally based on a dream I had back in 2018! I dreamt the main hall area and mapped it out in a different game engine at the time, and then for some reason I kept having recurring dreams of returning to this place and exploring its bizarre twisting and claustrophobic hallways more and more as they lead deeper into the house, and I decided it was too good to not bring it to life and turn it into a map. Despite the strange design, I'd say it turned out to be a pleasantly interesting map to use for a game! It was also the map that kickstarted the development of Amygdala: Prelude.
That looks fantastic! I really like how it avoids the typical flowery, dramatic language trope and still creates intrigue while world building.
Have you seen the horrifying things that live in Australia? This is just another day for them. They can handle this themselves. No problem 😂
it has a very strong Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines feel :D
True! He should play that. Fave
The fact that this was done in Source made it that much more fun. Also I am glad you mentioned Darkness Within games. I really miss those, might have to replay them cause it's been a long time.
Frickin LOVED this! Thank you for sharing it with us. Love your videos, you are one of my favorites, man.

This was fun. A little easy, as you put it, but the game seems like it will be meatier in content, so hopefully you don’t get everything right away. Hope you will play the full game when it’s out. I will be watching.
Thanks, Chris!
I'd love to see a full playthrough of this :)
Sorry for Australia, but on the plus side we get to destroy stuff, nice demo please play full game when released 😊
That was good and really want to see the full game. Thank you Chris
The attack mechanics in this game are so explosive 😂
I made the attacks pronounced in this game because I was so fed up with most triple AAA games making guns sound like a wet fart, and feel like they fired bb pellets, and melee weapons feel like plastic. I long miss when a lot of weapons in games had a real 'oomph' factor in them (e.g. the shotgun from DOOM).
Hell yeah!! Let's go, Thanks for the upload and entertainment CJU!!!!
I very much enjoyed watching this one and hope you do a full playthrough when it becomes available. Thanks
I really liked it! More monsters, a little more detail here and there and maybe a higher difficulty and this will be a gem!
When opening a door to another room/area, it sounds like the first half of the door sound in the old Elder Scrolls games.
very interesting, nice old school touch :)
Perfect sunday night viewing ❤
Yay! Another horror game set in Australia for Chris to play.
Please do a part two! I was totally loving this game
YAY, I’ve been missing cosmic horror video games
Please play this whole game! This is great!
This looks solid, hope you play the full game/sequels of this one!
Thanks to Yoongi all I can think about when I see the word or hear amygdala is his song and of course the brain.
This kinda puts me in mind of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
I'm very interested to see what's going to happen next... But no more spiders please. 😑
There's only three spiders I like; Tarantulas and Blackarachnia from Beast Wars, and Rachnera from Monster Musume.
Please do play more. Very curious to see what happens to Australia.
I'm really excited to see more of this!
A little like finding Dr. Rosenberg from HL Blue Shift and dealing with a portal. I'm still impressed with the Lovecraftian game you played a while back, which was more like story time, that ended with that massive sea creatures amazing roar.
I'm guessing the horror for me will be the "house-sized" spiders in the full version (pls do play). ...I hate spiders.
It did a great job of holding my interest. I'd like to see the full game.
That toilet part was hilarious!
Rather delightful surprise I'd say. Hope we see more of this! The spiders were the most horrible part for me :S
UNsure if this has been mentioned before, but it reminds me of Half Life a great deal! And that's not a bad thing🙂
Such an appropriate title for Lovecraftian horror! From Cambridge Dictionary:
amygdala - noun [ C ] ANATOMY specialized
US /əˈmɪɡ.də.lə/ UK /əˈmɪɡ.də.lə/ plural amygdalae US/əˈmɪɡ.də.liː/ UK/əˈmɪɡ.də.liː/
one of two parts of the brain that affect how people feel emotions, especially fear and pleasure
That toilet incident is going to destroy the algorithm on this video. I admittedly rewound several times just to rewatch that reaction, and I know I'm not the only one. Chris REALLY needs to do a new reaction compilation video one of these days.
And speaking of memories, man those door sounds take me back to playing Daggerfall! Such a timeless game and so advanced for its time!
To be fair, most Australians are ready to say goodbye to Australia these days. To be not-so-fair, Australia has a sad history of being destroyed in sci-fi - most notably in the original Gundam universe (UC timeline), where an entire Side (space colony) was dropped on Sydney in UC 0079, leaving a huge chunk of the continent underwater. They fly over the crater in 0083: Stardust Memory, which is now all ocean.
Also, in Source's defense, the engine may be old, but it really gives off a natural atmosphere that most engines can't easily replicate. It's sort of like walking into a musty old abandoned building vs walking into a building made to LOOK old and musty. There are so many GMod horror maps, often simply involving UrbEx that just have creepy down to a T. and the new Portal mod shows that the old engine can still match today's Unreal and Unity for beauty when it wants to.
Now as for the game itself, I thought it was a real treat. It epitomises what The Librarian refers to as "creepy and comfy". Getting all those weapons and ammo didn't bother me, because we know the professor was waging a little private war on the cultists, and I can imagine after getting so much equipment in the mansion, we'll soon discover ammo is at a premium in the Deep. We may also find that different monsters will be weaker to different kinds of gins, forcing us to be more strategic in what weapon we use at any given time in addition to having to watch ammo usage. It's very likely any new weapons we get that actually have ammo available will all be technoorganic or alien in nature and our starting arsenal will soon become useless.
Also, I found the graphics to be quite appropriate and the style brought some nostalgia - but for older PC games like Shivers and Scratches as opposed to the overused PS1 aesthetic most "retro horror" games rely upon. All in all, a bloody excellent demo, with the only real flaw (in my mind) being that glitch in the attic that left Chris stuck. And as for the humour... One of the best aspects of Lovecraft's work is that the horror is often intentionally absurd in such a way that you laugh in your fear because your mind can't process what it's seeing. Literally, it shorts out the amygdala by overloading it with conflicting emotional responses, resulting in insanity. The game does a really good job at representing this, I think.
Door opening sfx making me think about Lethal Company
6:19, the moment CJU turned into a homewrecker.
The family was better off with the cultists tbh
I really enjoyed it. Hope to see more!
Those spiders look too much like fiddle back spiders. We have so many around here. Creeping me out.
Yes 100% agree simply made games are fun and more entertaining due to it lowers the stupid frustration level made in games that have very poor interaction and way too many controls to those said actions. Liking this game so far hopefully they continue to make it this way in the full game without hard core enemy with poor combat and adding to the unbalancing issues respawn over and over for no apparent reason and no return back and forth with things. Just give us only going forward a lot a return after being done with said objectives in full.
I would love to see the full game!
I like the game so far and would like to see where it goes from there. Lovecraftian lore always piques my interest. The main thing I was still waiting for by the end of the demo, however, was a house-sized spider to appear. haha Maybe in the full game... :P
the way the view shook when the toilet broke LMAO
Yes, CJU, I want to see the whole game...
I love that the favorite part of the game was shattering things 😂
6:24 ok now that I've got my hands on this thing where those Dark Souls games everyones talking about.. talk about OP weapons
"Did you take ballet or something?"
me : choked laughing
The babies are indeed the size of regular huntsman spiders. Haha.
Damn i really hope u finish this one chris. I think it was really fun to watch. I wanna see whats in those depths...😊
Very good. I hope you'll play the full game !
Like Lilly from Star Trek: First Contact said:
_"You broke your little ships."_ 🚽
Huntsman Spiders are non-venemous, so they can't actually hurt you.
Loved the Demo. Definitely needs to have more of the horror / survival aspect in the final game though. Regardless it was refreshing. Feels like a Resident evil or Half life game. Excited to see more of this for sure.
Oh, to be in a stranger’s house having the time of your life wrecking shit with a pipe wrench
Lol the intro! I'm from Australia and like... yeah fair enough. hahaha
Hello and welcome to another CJU playthrough. Like this video right now or else Australia’s death will be on YOUR hands specifically.
I'd love to watch you play the full game
6:26 lol the most precious thing u love chris and u just destroyed it
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth was pretty cool.
The monsters that live on Australia finally had enough of Australia itself.
I love the source engine.
I subscribed to the channel because of the devotion to WCs, toilets, and shitters. I’m not sure that I can forgive the wanton destruction of such sacred vessels. Psshh. Just kidding. I just about wet myself from laughing! 🤣
Lovecraftian smash up. Fun times.
Let’s get it!!!!! Just love you my dude❤
Amygdala reminds me of the Bloodborne boss.
