I took a month between jobs and luckily the new job is less stress, but 1 month is not enough for the lingering burnout to go away. You can't just get a massage and go for a walk to fix burn out, it's serious mental and physical damage that takes months to return to a steady state.
Thank you… I needed this video and needed clarification as well since I also took a pretty long break from software engineering/development and wondered how other people faired
Hi, @KaroCodes, I've been on a similar path in the past few years and I'd really like to take a break just like you did. Your video helped me realize I wasn't alone. But you've stopped posting video on TH-cam since... Really love to know your story afterwards.
She keeps growling at me until I show her to the camera every single time I'm recording 🙈 I think she just wants to make sure people know who the executive producer is 🤣
Definitely think you did the right thing by taking a break and moving back into an IC role since that's the type of work you enjoy doing. I also moved back into an IC role and it has been much better not having to worry about the performance of others and being able to think more about how to solve the next technical challenge. Granted I still need to consider the performance of others, but I'm not directly managing their performance which is huge. I am curious how you managed to take 6 months off of work though. Even for a sabbatical that seems like a long time -- granted I'm working in the US and a one month sabbatical every 3 years is thought of as a major benefit, which I feel like is far too short. Was it a matter of bringing it up to your manager and getting approval or did more go into it?
You nailed it with "not needing to manage others' performance directly is huge"! 💯 Re taking the break: - 3-6 months after working at the same place for 4-5 years seems pretty common in Australia 🦘 - My manager knew for quite a while that I wanted to take longer time off, he was also aware of my burnout and depression. It wasn't an easy conversation (it never is - talking about this kind of stuff) but he was very understanding and helpful. I also got a lot of guidance from our HR people partner 💛
Hey. My name is Umar and I'm 16 years old, I'm doing medical+ICT O levels rn. I want to become a Software Engineering Manager what should I do? What subjects should I take in A levels and what particularly I should work on to become a SOFTWARE ENGINEERING MANAGER.
Have you ever considered taking an extended break from your career? If so how long? :)

SAMIES - I thought I would take a 6 month break but thinking of a longer one now!
@@Familiar7 sorry to hear that the month wasn't enough :( burnout is unpredictable, I only really started feeling ok after 5 months off 😬

I was out of work for a medical leave of 5 months, same reason, burnout. It was a dark time, but I learnt lot of myself.

I hope your break was good! 🫂

It's good to see you figured it out and happiness is important! Be who you want to be, not what you need to be.
Happy to hear you're back on the grind Karo, miss working together

@@KaroCodes thanks for that extra info, good to know it's pretty common in Australia to take longer sabbaticals ☺
