  • This GMC was used as a shed and a trash can. Come along with this amazing transformation from gross to glistening - well not really glistening.

    My Uncle Ray had a factory yellow 69 GMC with a camper shell. He drove it from Westminster Maryland to Phoenix Arizona, as he was working in gold/placer claims/sites, in coordination with The Bureau Of Land Management.
    After long hot work, alot of land surveying, etc., we camped out in that 69's camper shell bed. We camped in a ghost town, called Erinberg, right there in the AZ/CA state lines, on the Colorado River.
    That 69 GMC Ray had was a bulletproof beast. Never failed us, always ran, and that camper shell camping bit was pretty cool.
    Nice to see Richard and Christina rescuing a truck very similar.

    Hi from Scotland guys… We’ll that cleaned up very well. It’s has a nice patina about it.
    I see that Richard rebuilt the carb, ..I would have loved to hear it running after that.
    It was a marathon job cleaning it out, but well worth it. It scrubbed up pretty good all things considered. The old truck are my particular favourite. The physical presence of the older trucks, plus the V8’s are pure Americana…. And not something you see a lot of over here. You can get them of course, but folks want to make a killing out of them, and the prices are ( I think ) prohibitive.
    Anyway…on to the next one. What’s next..?
    All the best…

    I really enjoy watching your channel and wanted to pass on the way I was taught to get an engine running in the Army. As you found out this trucks timing was off. Hint fire popping in carb. Simple fix. Pull No 1 plug. Hold finger over plug hole and bump engine over to feel compression start. Then bar over engine to line timing mark at TDC. Remove distributer cover to see what terminal rotor is pointing at. Check plug wire that is going to No1 cylinder. Loosen distributer and rotate slightly to see spark at end of No 1 wire. Lock down the distributer. Engine is now field timed. It should run well enough to get you home.

    Thanks for another great video. I’m glad that you show the bad side of bringing a vehicle back to life. Not glamorous at all. My question for you is at what point do you decide that a vehicle is to far gone for a complete restoration? I know anytime a restoration is done, money spent will most likely be more than what the vehicle is worth. On this truck was the main reason because of the bed being so rusted? Richard your channel is always wanting me to wanting to watch more. Keep it up.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Kevin! I decide if a vehicle is too far gone for a restoration is to take the condition vs. the demand for the vehicle. Taking this GMC as an example, a GMC long bed 3/4 ton is not very desirable. Certainly not like a short bed 1/2 ton Chevy. That limits the demand, thus the value. The rusty condition would take thousands to address, and the result would be a vehicle that most people will not pay a premium for. For me there isn't any math to it, it is all gut. The GMC could be made into a weekend "dump run" truck without much money, sot That is what I had in mind for it and how I sold it. There is a large market for these beat up drivers, they just have to be priced right. I hope that answered your question. Thank you for the support Kevin.

    • @whattherust
      @whattherust  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. The supports for the bed are fine. All that is needed is a large piece of metal or wood for the floor to make it usable. It was common practice to do this up North.

    Those bottles looked like they may have been 2 litres. According to a web site of a company Wineware a 2 litre wine bottle is called a Magnum. They listed the names for the various sizes. That GMC body style ran from ‘67-‘74. I think I would have one in my dream collection (junk yard actually).

      I looked at it again. A Magnum is 1.5 litres - twice the normal wine bottle size. So, Colt 45 was sold in ‘Forty Bottles’, 40 fluid ounces - 1.18 litres.

    So yeah housepaint on a vehicle. I knew a feller back in the early 90’s lived nearby he lost license and what he’d do is repaint his vehicles at least weekly with like Walmart house paint and a brush. After a few colors he moved the vehicle down the road for a different rig.

    dunno about the parts (aren't those Wolfrace wheels worth anything? maybe they aren't safe to use anymore after all these years laying on the bed), but the lil Hot Wheels is indeed a Bronco. someone seems to tag it a 84? the wheels are way newer, though, somethign like 2005 or something. interesting that it still looks neat, the bottom plate is unpainted and can blossom out like crazy and become brittle...
