A most interesting video. Your comment about the cleanliness of the train, both exterior and the WC, applies to many trains here. Travel by train is quite expensive here. Even more so when you purchase a ticket from a machine. The OV chipcard is indeed useful. They cost €7,50. It is good to know that when you travel by train using the card you need at least €20 on the card to check in. For bus, tram and metro you need at least €4 to check in. For some express buses you need €10 to check in. We are very much behind, for example the UK (London) because we cannot pay with our bank card yet.

Well, in the u-ov busses (utrecht city) the only way you can pay is with your bank card, is that or using your ov chipkaart, they don't accept money anymore, and in some busses of Amsterdam the same happens

Actually for travelling on metro, tram and bus you don't need any money on your OV card. You just can't have a negative amount on it. So basically anything above -0,01 is perfect

      @SpotterCrazyperson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

With NS Flex on your OV chipcard you don't need € 20 on it. Nothing at all, it's perfect. You will pay the price of your trip after a month

Actually this trains are now being refurbished, the first ones riding with the new interiors are the 9528 and the 9504. I had the opportunity to travel on one from Amsterdam to Hoorn and I have to say that the seats are pretty comfy in comparison with the DDZ ones, oh, and you also have USB ports in every seat!!

Can't wait to be able to go back to the Netherlands (from the UK) and ride their trains. I work on the railway in the UK and get free (or heavily discounted) travel on many European systems; Dutch railways are the easiest to use with free travel as you don't need to book in advance or reserve seats 😊

Here is a 360 video. According another (dutch vlogger): "2nd class (blue) seats are ok, 1st class not so" (= basically same seats as 2nd class, but little wider). usb in 2nd class + outlet, fold talbes not too big for a laptop.. There are 'love seat' benches.
Really bad to me is that there are no in between armrests in 2nd class !👎
also negative: between back-to-back seats (like 0:51) you could stass a big suitcase before , but that space is now slightly narrower, i heard. Not handy esp. since the top floors don't have overhead luggage storage..
      mixed reviews to say ..

The first class upgrade is not just for the seat comfort. During rush hour intercity lines between the major cities (for example the Amsterdam-Utrecht track) can get really busy and a first class ticket basically means you are guaranteed a seat. This is because most frequent travellers like students have transport cards that are only valid in second class. Also commuters usually only get second class fares reimbursed by their employer. I think this is a pretty good system, because it ensures that, for a price, there is always seating available if you really want it.
About the ride being overpriced, as ive mentioned before, almost nobody local pays full fare. Students usually use a transportation card they can apply for and people who commute for work usually get travel expenses reimbursed. Peak hours are monday to friday 06:30-09:00 and 16:00-18:30. Most people have the 40% reduction card which automatically applies the discount when you tap-in outside these times. Travel companions can even make use of your discount card as long as they travel with you. They can load the discount at a ticket machine and it will automatically apply when they tap-in and -out. There are other discount cards available like the very cheap 65+ senior card, making it even cheaper for elderly travellers.
All these discounts etc can be activated on the nationwide personal OV Chipcard valid not only in trains but in (almost) all forms of public transport. You can even link it to your bank account so it will automatically charge if needed, making the whole process very convenient and you almost never have to interact with a ticket machine. For everybody staying in the country for an extended period, its definitely worth looking in to getting an OV card and some of the available discount plans..

Last time I checked, must have been 3 to 4 year ago or so, NS said it puts its train through the washing machine every 3 days. So you may have lucked out and your train may have gone out of service at the terminal in Maastricht and was cleaned on the outside then. Or even later.

Please be advised, trains in the Netherlands never depart or arrive on platform X, Xy or XXy. Cause if it did a lot of people would die and trains would be destroyed etc. Trains do, however, depart from track X, Xy or XXy. It's better to have trains departing/arriving on tracks. It also avoids confusion because at certain stations it is: track 1 and 2, 3 and 4, 6 and 7. Track 5 does exist but has no platform. I don't know if you have ever explained in any video of yours, but the number letter combination can be very important. A train departing from track 4b generally has a different route and terminus station than a train departing from track 4a.

Pity you got such an oldie. The luxury of first class isn't the just the better seats, it's being able to sit. They are almost never crowded. Nice & quiet! Also plush & comfy chairs(no-one expects!) and there are plug-ins for one's laptop & phone.

A major incentive to travel first class is the vastly increased chance of finding a seat. I've been on plenty of trains where second class was very crowded but first class had plenty of free seats.
Personally I have started travelling first class for the past few months: Weekend Vrij (subscription for free travel on weekends) is €31 for second class and €37 for first, so it's a bargain. I must say I feel much more comfortable travelling in first class, and mainly due to the reassurance of always having enough space to sit.

Downstairs there is a space for larger suitcases, you can see it on the right hand side, behind the first seats at 6:12
You have to take a seat nearby to keep an eye on your luggage.
Almost all passengers are commuters, so not much space is needed for suitcases.
On every major station there is take-away coffee and other drinks, so if you are aware, in advance, that there is no catering, you can prepare for the trip.
Trains are usually clean on the inside, but graffiti should have been removed immediately. 😒

I would tend to agree that the price is a little high for a commuter train trip of 25 miles. I just checked the fare on Maryland's MARC commuter trains on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor between Washington, DC and BWI Airport (a little further than 25 miles), and it's $7US one-way, vs. about $11US for what this trip cost.

    • @alctalks1487

The difference is that train commuters here usually regularly use the train, and the NS offers plenty of subsriptions that are suited to each individual traveller. In my case, I pay 45€ a month for free train rides in the weekends and outside of peak hours, and I do this almost every day (between these two cities). I like taking the train every day, because it's efficient and reliable. Of course, a single trainride is very expensive on its own, but there are so many perks that I guess you might only know if you're Dutch. For example, I'll have a visitor from abroad, and she'll be getting 40% off just because she's travelling with me. And NS also offers combi tickets for daytrips to eg zoos and amusementparks where the bus fare is also included. Another comment described it like a metro network, you're guaranteed your journey from A to B in a quick manner without too many problems 🤔. A train that's 5 minutes late already gets the ire of the train travellers (ofc Japan and Switzerland are even more on time).

Cateringservices on domestic Intercitytrains were already limited and pretty bad for many years, but now they have suspended them all together. So traveling by train in the Netherlands means to buy something to eat/drink in advance. On the other hand: you can travel very frequent from early morning till late evening from/to everywhere. So let's say: no on board catering is the charme of traveling in the Netherlands. And let's face it: by far most people are less then two hours in one train so.... And a lot of train are dirty, inside and outside. That irritates me more than not be able to buy a cup of coffee.

I would say that in journeys less than two hours having catering on board isn't worth it.
