- One of the most common mistakes you should avoid after every meal is lying down. Although it may feel comfortable, especially after a big meal, this position can lead to several complications within the gastrointestinal system. When you lie flat, your body struggles to digest food properly. This horizontal position can promote acid reflux and heartburn, as the stomach acid may flow back into the esophagus, causing discomfort. Moreover, lying down can slow down the digestive process, leading to bloating and gas buildup. This disruption in digestion can also affect insulin sensitivity and blood glucose levels; when the body is not able to efficiently process carbohydrates, it may lead to spikes in blood sugar. Ultimately, maintaining an upright position-at least for a while after eating-can support better digestion, help regulate insulin response, and enhance your overall comfort. By avoiding the temptation to lie down, you can promote a healthier digestive system and improve your post-meal experience.

I have crohns disease, and I've found that doing my yoga routine after eating not only helps digestion but also helps me keep myself regular I'm prone to bowel obstructions
check you don't have severe B12 deficiency as that can be a consequence and can really weaken you.
Be careful you must not do very vigorous exercise after eating. It should just be a digestive walk. Beware of yoga as well. If you are a Christian you do not want to mess with thst heathen practice. Every movement and pose is a bowing down to the devil check it out on youtube. Very dangerous and many Christians are not aware of it sadly.

Luckily my body is smart enough to let me know it's a no no to do.when l eat late and go to bed shortly after l feel so uncomfortable and sometimes have weird dreams..so l rather go and sleep bit hungry then having a full uncomfortable stomach.

I don't ever lay down after eating makes my heart race. And I can't go for long walks after eating, I would get cramps on the left side.
But I did go for a slow 15 minute walk the other night so that I wouldn't get the cramp. Had no problems. So I'm going to try to keep moving after eating.

It’s crazy this feed pops up. I just had a great 1hr 30 min workout the other night. I ate a heavy meal right after and went straight to bed. My stomach was churning all night long. I woke up out my sleep, with my heart racing and threw me into atrial fibrillation. Never ever happened to me before.

Thank you Dr Mandell, I've found your videos very helpful for post gallbladder/acute pancreatitis gut issues and fibromyalgia (especially fennel seeds which work really well and at a fraction of the cost). Staying awake can be an issue for me after eating, so how long should I stay awake after eating?
But why i get so sleepy when my belly full???
Try and avoid carbs that turn into sugar! Makes me sleepy too and I have diabetes so have to take care 🙏
The oxygen goes from your brain to your stomach to digest it, therefore you get sleepy... one reason.

@rosegobies2287 Apple cider vinegar good for sugar balance... my carbs are black and brown rice, potatoes and sweet potatoes, and I don't eat bread or pasta. Love my meat, veges, and Greek yoghurt, and small amounts of fruit! I've got allergies to preservatives so I have to be careful xx God bless you all out here!!

As a foreigner, who now lives in America - they lie down because they are TIRED! Also, it's not super pedestrian friendly! I do what Dr.M suggests on an excerise ball intuitively when I can't walk after dinner. Thanks for confirming doc!

Can I ask is it unusual that it doesn't seem to affect me if I lay down after I eat?
It's quite common for me to eat my big meal late then lay down and sleep straight after and I never get heart burn or Stomach cramps so does that mean I'm alright to carry on this habit?
