The video is made so that you easily can follow along, and pause and play as you explore the low poly pixel art 3D modelling software Blockbench.
This is the first video in the updated ArtsByKev Blockbench Tutorial series, where you can learn to become a professional Minecraft artist and content creator.
Something I don't bring up in this video is that you can change the 3D settings to for example mimic Blender, if you prefer how the 3D viewport works in that software. There are a few alternatives for this, and you will find those under "File - Preferences ..."
Next we will start working on projects together, in a follow-along format. That way you will be able to design exactly what I make, and I will walk you through the entire process. If you have ideas or requests for things we should make together, be sure to subscribe and comment down below!

As a person that learned these tools as a kid in 3d modeling and Block Bench mob maker user, I can confirm that this is the best block bench tutorial by far, but plsss show how to make mod packs or ways for ppl to make mods, weather using a source or coding, you gotta show suggestions for that plssss?

That would be really nice, it'd be good to teach us how to make mod packs for textures and other things
there are a lot of guides on integrating blockbench with mcreator, a much easier way to get into modding imo. trying to jump into forge documentation as a beginner is like diving into shark infested waters.
@@mikeh6356 what about mobile people, or people limited to their devices?
I've seen you in other youtuber's videos showcasing mobs created by the ideas of that youtuber's fans and now I see you as a lot more than just another youtuber. This will help a lot on my journey to learn modding and I will revisit these videos in the VERY near future.
They all started with my old tutorial ^^
This is amazing, I wish more tutorials had this lay out, thank you so much!
Thanks so much I was unsure if blockbench was safe to use. This channel deserves for subscribers

You're welcome!
Hey Kev, When can we expect the rest of the tutorials in this new series? Really want to learn blockbench by making goodlooking and Usable assets like that sign post and that character you showed untextured.. Please do not stop this new series!
EDIT: may I also suggest making a new playlist folder on the artsbykev channel, like you did on the morebykev channel. And lastly.. Blockbench is not only used in minecraft, others are also using it to make models ready for when Hytale comes and others (like myself) will use blockbench for our indie game projects. Would you be willing to take this into account for when you are teaching us blockbench modeling, like how to handle animation, How to make certain pixels in your textures glow, how to create different pixel-art textures for the same model, and maybe some tip and tricks on having a good workflow, fixing texturing/uv wrap problems and importing images in other texturing tools (Gimp/Photoshop/Aseprite) to make them ready to import into rendering tools (Blender) or game engines, just to show them off with visual effects/lighting.
I aim to cover all if not as much of it as possible. I also use Blockbench for other game engines!
Were meant to get them out earlier.
As parenting goes, I fell ill a few days ago and have been busy with my son since my wife was sick the week before that.
Any particular part you are extra anxious to get to know?
@@MoreByKev
I think there are 3 parts/subjects that are not commonly mentioned or taught that I would love to learn myself. This includes the things I mentioned above of course.
1: Manipulating objects/cubes. Let's say you made one side of a sword and they have angled cubes in the handle. Now you want the other side to be a mirror of this. How would we achieve this. How can we get the same angles in other direction without messing up the angle.
2: Texturing. This is my biggest issue with blockbench, I have a bit of trouble "wrapping" my head around it XD. You have to select texture size when creating your first project, and again when you make your first texture file. Do they have to be the same? What if you want some parts of your model to be lower size (16x16) while bigger parts in a higher size (32x32) can that be done? How?.. And finally.. what if you made a model (and you chose 32x32 at the beginning of the project) and you decide you want a lower (or higher) texture size. Can you just wrap up a bigger size around the same model or do you have to do some editing to your model?
3: The most important thing to learn if using blockbench for other things then minecraft is to extend the workflow outside of blockbench. How does this work? For example using another tool like Aseprite to do your texturing, can this be done and do you see the changes live in blockbench? If you are using your model to be imported into an game engine (Unity, Godot etc.) What do you need to know, to get it working with both textures and animations. And how would you be able to make parts of your model glow (like eyes or parts of your weapon). As far as I know you cannot select pixels in your texture to make it glow in Godot or Blockbench.
So basically.. For new people (including me) having someone that can teach us the workflow to create models (and manipulate it with rotation, extruding, custom shapes), textures and animation to be imported into a game engine would be VERY important and incredibly useful.
I just dived into game development. have purchased numerous courses to teach Godot, GDScripting, Music/sound creation, Blender and Pixel-art. I'm learning so much at so many places and it's great to hop around and learn what I need to know to improve in game development. it has been a dream of mine for the past 18 years. I love how blockbench can look (I've seen the amazing stuff on sketchfab) and the simplicity but also strenght of Godot. But as you might know the problem lies in the courses/tutorials of Blockbench. There are a few out there but 90% of them are focused on Minecraft (importing, animation, adding effects, new monsters or blocks) and also a large part uses the older Blockbench. These videos can be 3 to 5 years old.. No new videos on blockbench modeling has been made that ALSO targets people who want to use it for game development or make scene rendering as a hobby. When I saw your video and the way you teach us things, I really hoped you could fill that void. Becoming the go-to tutorial that teaches us how to make beautiful and complex models with amazing textures to be used in our other projects (scene redering or game development).
Anyway.. with 3 weeks without a new video I thought you maybe decided not to continue this tutorial series. Hearing about you and your wife being sick I can totally understand and wish you well. I hope you do not get a 'forced' feeling from us that you need to keep the videos coming. You need to get better first.. making videos when your head is not at the right place yet, will only demotivate you to keep going.. so my best wishes ;)
I am very much looking to cover those topics ahead, and you are very right about the intention of the series.
Minecraft is a common space for Blockbench usage, but not the only one.
I have the poor habit of falling out of sync with my upload and production schedule, where the biggest issue now is that I am also on parental leave. So when not sick, still very occupied with other endevours 😅

I just started learning the tools for Minecraft modding and I'm excited to see you go in depth into blockbench.
If possible, I have a request that I would like you to go over at some point. When learning about modeling and animating different blocks and entities something that keeps coming up is a library called GeckoLib which is an animation engine. All videos about GeckoLib I've found simply state that you just need to add a plugin to blockbench, yet they never go into details about the benefits/advantages of making a GeckoLib entity vs a regular entity. From what I could tell you can still animate in Blockbench without it. Basically I'm trying to figure out, why should I use it?
GeckoLib is for when you wanna export keyframe animations for Java mods, since normally mods rely on math animations.
You can do a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a human and with animation and tell what mistakes to avoid since in my case when making the forearm and the arm they came off in blockbench
I hope you will make a tutorial on preview scenes in the future

Hi everyone! I have a small problem, when i make an entity and ad it into a "mcreator" when i am testing it hands and legs arent working like normal, they're not moving from front to rear, but from left to right. If someone have got such problem or know how to fix it , can u tell me please????
How can I move a block independently of the grid? Because if you can't, you couldn't make things like teeth, a tail, and other basic things to make something.
Is it possible to make a mod in Blockbench to build much faster, such as creating or destroying many blocks at once rather than painstakingly one at a time? On top of making mobs, can you also make additional items, blocks, weapons, armor, and game modes with Blockbench? I'm curious about the capabilities of Blockbench-?
Blockbench is a modelling software.
You must learn coding to change, edit or adjust ingame behaviours
But if you learn the coding, you can make mods? Is this easy to do? I want to make my own mods & skins, but I've never had any kind of experience with such.
Modding for Java?
Easy is a subjective term, depends on your information accumulation and problem solving skills.
And code is not something you write in Blockbench, however you can script variables into animations and more to later control with code in your mod / pack

on that topic I also want to make a 3D mushroom what model do I use for that one? (I'm making a java mod)
@A11ie__ I would start by reading up on the current limitations / requirements for models in your preferred modding setup. Usually there's tons of information related to the topic directly associated via those sources.
Hello, I have a problem rotating blocks, it only allows me 22.5 and 45, what can I do to change that?
Java models have those hard bound limitations :)
There are ways to break that, but then the model won't work in game.
Yo I have a request from a decently experienced blockbench and bridge user how do I do player animations I see it all the time but never understood how to do it
There's more to that topic than what meets the eyes, but at its core it's pretty straight forward, as with all other entities, except that you need one set for fps, and one for 3ps

how do you import
Pls answer how to make costume ability for our mob like i make godzilla but doesn't have a atomic breath pls answer
Programming is the answer to your query, a fair bit of it as well.
First you need to design all visual effects yourself. Use any form of image manipulation software, learn how Particle systems are designed and check out Snowstorm (for minecraft) if you want to make a proper visual design. You can also make effects by animating cubes in Blockbench, but then you need to add them as entities and tell them when to spawn, why, how, where and after how long they should die and how that should look is something you need to animate in Blockbench. Then you need to program them to show and do what you want them to do when the model is in a game - such as:
- What damage
- When
- How
- Why / Why Not
- Who does it affect?
- How big/small is the effect?
- How does the effect travel, if it is a projectile
- How does the effect know how and what to do next?
All of that, and tons more, is solved in code, that you must learn and write for your model using any form of text / code editor. Usually takes a few days to get right, even for a professional.
If you are new to programming, I suggest you start there, and learn the basics - then apply that logic into your workflow with other coding languages (yes, there are plenty of different ways to write code - and they all work for different systems / games / platforms / applications).
Hope that began to scratch the surface of your request.
