    I'd put a misting/spraying dystem if I were needed to often go away for work or vacation. It might not water the sphagnum but it should at least keep them from drying out.

      I rarely water my plants, mainly mist and they always seem to be watered so a misting system might keep them watered.

    I am heading to London for a week next month. What I do is move the hanging pots out of the window and hang them on a clothes dryer away from the window. I leave the cephs and pings where they are. I will move the helis out of the window too. I put all the regular pots in my bath. I will water well and I go one step further and leave some water in the trays above the bottom of the pots. Remy, were you checking the weather at home when you were away? Bet you did! Cheers Adam

      Only checking the temperature. Only one time it reached 27°C (80°F) so I cooled down the house with the AC.

    pleased to meet you!!! I am fascinated by nepenthes and yours are beautiful, only I grow them in a kind of terrarium and I was watching your video about whether or not it is good to wet the leaves, so I would like to know the right time to keep the fans on computer as well as the humidifier? Beforehand thank you very much!!

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wet leaves would be ok if they dry after (a fan would do that). The fan doesn't have to be ON all the time. Depending of the size of your terrarium, you can run it 15 minutes every 2 hours.

    Hello, thank you for this advice! It's super helpful :) I have a question
    My nepenthes seems to consistently only have 3 pitchers. When my newest one finished growing and opened up, an older one died. Now, a new one is starting to grow in, and another one is starting to die. Is there a way for me to make the older ones last longer so that I can have more than 3 pitchers at a given time? Thank you!

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The number of pitchers active in the same time depends mostly of the species. If the pitchers don't get any food they last longer, but the plant grow slower too.

    Hello Remy. I have some seedlings that I received. I put them in a mix of long fiber sphagnum and perlite in same pots you used. I have them in a nursery with a humidity of around 80 percent. Do you have any tips for watering them so I don't cause root rot but also they don't lack moisture?
    Thank you.

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you can, press the sphagnum. If it's soft like a sponge it's good. If it gets dry you need water. You can also lift the pots, when too light you need water. If you're not sure you should water, then don't: dryer side is safer. 😉

      @WindowsillNepenthes thank you very much! I gotta admit that I didn't know what I was getting into when I ordered these plants. I never thought I was gonna get seedlings! Well, now to do my best at taking care of them. They are a bunch of Mirabillis Globosa x Ampullaria x Villosa and a couple of Bellii.

    Is that bleached white moss at 11:03 totally dead? Does it recover or just get overgrown by new moss?

    • @ewanb8067
      @ewanb8067 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it is fully bleached, if you look closely the tips are purple, meaning it is either particularly bleached purple sphagnum or weirdly bleached normal sphagnum. If it is the first option, then yes, it will probably come back. I don't know about the second option though.

    Also, when potting, you could put 2-3(+)cm of perlite in the BOTTOM of the pot... then, the plants can probably sit in a bit of water (say 2cm) on top of the white lattice; because the perlite (I presume) doesn't absorb so much water and can allow the substrate above to drain even though the perlite is in water. I do this (perlite in the bottom) for all my neps.

      Yes perlite at the bottom would help but as I raise the post they never sit into water. That's why I was surprised by this problem.

  • @ewanb8067

    Hi Remy! Your advice is the best out there! I've got a nepenthes x hookeriana that (I think) is just starting to vine. I know this hybrid barely ever vines (mainly because I've only ever seen one picture of an upper), but how rare acctually is it for one to vine? Also, do you know if it would be worth anything extra if it is vining, probably not but it's better to know! Carry on making these great videos and I hope you enjoyed your vacation.

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, the only problem about vining nepenthes is the fact the humidity goes down. So up on the vine, humidity can be very low indoor, preventingthe pitchers.

  • @thomasa2532

    Hey Rémy, how do you feel about capillary mats for nepenthes? If I have a humidifier system do I need to worry as much about humidity around roots?

    hey man quick question: can a nepenthes just decide not to throw out a pitcher. say if it had enough nutrients can it throw the pitcher in a few months or is the swelling completely gone. also say if it didnt have adequate light will it throw off the unused pitcher growth points or are they a time sensitive thing? just wondering

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would have to really over feed the plants to prevent pitchers (feeding by the pitcher and by the roots). But usually it's simply a lack of light or humidity.

    • @hakim599
      @hakim599 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WindowsillNepenthes maybe I'm asking the wrong question. How about this can a nepenthes that just got a new leaf decide to wait to make a pitcher from that leaf? And say two more leafs it decides to pitcher that first leaf?

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hakim599 it can grow leaves and grow pitchers later. But if the new leaf grow a pitcher, the old ones won't. They will have missed their turn.

    Ok so I use the same water bottle, a 2 litre sprayer. I am always so careful to not wet the leaves to avoid water sitting in the joints of the leaves, to avoid rot. So looks like I am being too fussy with my nepenthes, is it ok just to water over the whole plant? I guess it must be!!! I might change my process and be less fussy. I may still be more careful with my orchids.

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends of the airflow. On a tank or a greenhouse where you don't have a lots of airflow, that can be a problem. You can avoid leaving water between the leaves but some species naturally have their leaves shaped to prevent that. Nepenthes are way less sensitive than orchid.

    Hey Rémy! I was wondering whether you've had any experience using expanded clay, such as LECA; or seramis. Not for drainage, but rather in the place that perlite is used to provide aeration. Some sources claim the clay leaks minerals, others say only if it's fertilized. Have you done anything using such? Even better, have you tried soaking it in water and measuring the TDS? I sadly don't have a TDS meter available right now
