  • First and foremost this is a serious undertaking. If you have experience in this alpine setting you will find it pretty straight forward. If you do not have some experience or have none at all I would suggest going with someone who does. Below is a link for a guide service that can help.
    I have done my best to be as accurate as I possibly can. The lines that show the routes up the mountain may be a little bit off. It is difficult to see the details on the Google maps shown in the video.
    The preparation that I discuss is my opinion from my experience. The point that I try to get across is that any outdoor activities like rock climbing, ice climbing, kayaking, hiking and mountaineering come with a certain amount of risk. It is important to have the right gear and as much information as possible to help insure a safe trip. An example for proper gear for this climb other than what I mentioned in the video would be a helmet is a must. There can be many folks on the route and falling rock can be a problem as well as protection should there be a fall. On the preparation I would suggest reading as much about the climb as you can get your hands on. There are many places to get information on-line. Always check the forecast and assume it will not be quite right. And then finally be ready for the evening thunderstorm. You do not want to be high in the mountains when the lightening strikes.
    Below I have included a couple of links where you can get information locally in Ouray, Colorado. If you are looking for a guided trip the San Juan Guides would be a good place to start. The mountain shop may also be a place to get some advice and purchase gear that you may need.
    Get ready for an experience of a lifetime. You won’t soon forget this trip. Have fun and safe travel.

    The problem with going up the Lavender Col route is the endless scree. Two steps up then sliding one step down, over and over again for a very long time. The SW Ridge is a much more enjoyable climb. Your cinematography was beautiful.

    Thanks Dana! What a beautiful hike with your wife! Those views were incredible! Also, great tips on rain gear, weather & route finding. On a personal note, my best friend & hiking buddy Don lost his wife a few days ago. They were married for 50+ years & have a great family. Hope you don't mind this aside but I think you get the importance of family & friends. Always glad to view your terrific efforts! Thanks again.

    I drove my 2x4 Chevy van almost to the small waterfall, about a thousand feet from the trailhead, but then there was a big, deep, muddy crater that even Wranglers were having trouble with. I managed to turn around without going over the edge. And I have a crazy friend who hikes to the summit for sunset and hikes down in the dark.

    Amazing video! It was fun seeing the ridge route since I only did Lavender Col. Been a long time since I’ve been up there. Views from 14K can’t be beat. I was able to drive my stock Suzuki SUV all the way when I was there but that was over 10 years ago. Roads do degrade.

    Hello Dana! Another fabulous video of down here in the San Juan Mountains. This is one that I leave the dog home; though based on your recommendations for the Silver Lake hike down by Silverton, I just got 40 feet of nylon webbing to craft a harness for him for short lifts....or steep descent assists. Also, you have great recommendations about the weather; especially on those east side approaches for hikes and climbs, the advanced notice that the weather is changing can be just minutes.

    My son and I hiked Sneffels in Aug. 2020, up the couloirs, and I'm wishing in retrospect we hadn't been thrown off at the idea of the Southwest Ridge exposure. Much better hike up that way I gather.

    Thanks for such detail. This is so helpful. It looks like this would be a tough climb solo, yes? My other 14ers have been solo.

    • @danahollister4084
      @danahollister4084  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you and for the note. I climbed the regular route the week before solo and two guys showed up both soloed the SW Ridge. They also went back down that way. I think it is pretty easy and the rock is really stable. I wouldn't hesitate a solo. I think it's way doable. The thing that always gives me the willies is when the rock is bad. That is not the case, it's good. Have fun and have a safe trip. If I can be of any help give a shout.

      @@danahollister4084 well I appreciate that. I'm going to be in Ouray in a couple of weeks. And really want to give it a try. This one's been on my bucket list for a long time. I've attempted before, but got snowed out. Maybe this is the year!

    Nice Vid. Camp Bird in some spots is very narrow. What do you do if you are driving up to or down from Sneffels and someone is coming from the opposite direction?

      It does get crowded but folks just pull aside to let people pass. Most are considerate.

    I really enjoyed the video - very informative. How severe is the exposure on the southwest ridge? Would a fall be deadly? I’m considering taking my two boys (9 & 13 years old) up the southwest ridge in August. They both have experience rock climbing (5.6/5.7) but this will be their first class 3 14er. I’m wondering if I should bring rope.

    • @danahollister4084
      @danahollister4084  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. The lower part of the route should not present any problem. The last section nearing summit is a bit exposed. You would not want to fall in that area. However I found it to be solid. The rock is good. If they can climb at the level you show there wouldn't be a problem. However a rope might not be a bad idea. Maybe just an 8mm for piece of mind. Exposure can play games with anyone. With this said it is straight forward, good rock and easy climbing. If you feel insecure, like I sometimes do, turn around. Safe travel. Hope that helps. Great climb. A must do!

      @@danahollister4084 Okay - that’s helpful. A light rope seems like the way to go. Appreciate the quick reply.

    Hi Dana, have you done Engineer Mtn. and if so, how does the SWR exposure compare?

    • @danahollister4084
      @danahollister4084  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John. Pretty similar. The one spot on Engineer is maybe a bit more than SWR. I felt secure on Sneffels. If you have done Engineer you will be fine. Have fun safe travel.
