  • They're the biggest metal band of all time: Metallica. Revered, reviled, pioneering and polarizing. So what is the Big 4 leaders' single greatest song? We posed that burning question to Pantera's Philip Anselmo, Black Sabbath's Geezer Butler, Guns N' Roses' Matt Sorum, Halestorm's Lzzy Hale, Motionless in White's Chris Motionless, Knocked Loose's Isaac Hale, Spirit Adrift's Nate Garrett and more.
What's your favorite Metallica song? Let us know in the comments.

Here's an underrated masterpiece: Trapped Under Ice is my favourite Metallica shredder. I love the intro solo where Kirk sort of spools up the tempo and then absolutely let's it rip into some of the saddest and fastest riffing in their arsenal. Also some of James' fastest and most aggressive singing. The whole song is full of explosive energy that sticks true to the first album, it's not mid tempo chuggy pounding like most of the stuff thereafter.

Personally, I have to say Orion. The reason I think so highly of Orion in particular is because it's so different from the rest of Metallica's catalog. It's still heavy but the melodies are technical and beautiful, it's easily the best bass performance we get from a Metallica song, and Lars's drumming is just the cherry on top. No lyrics even required, just a breathtaking instrumental and a testament to the musical prowess of Cliff Burton. I truly think it was their masterpiece song from their masterpiece album.

    -The intro Bach-inspired harmony
    -The jaw-dropping 'complex riff'
-The James' evil "We all shall die"

-The first Lars double bass section (Horsemen 's one is just a gallop)

Master of Puppets is the greatest metal song, and that album is the greatest album of all time. It changed metal forever. The first 4 Metallica records are phenomenal. Kill em all, Ride the lightning, Master, and And justice for all, are masterpieces. I was there from the beginning. I am in my 50s, and remember reading rock magazines and seeing a tiny little ad in the very back of the magazine advertising Metallica. Back then, anyone could pay a minimal amount, and have an advertisement placed at the end of the mag. Sometimes it was free. Like a want ads type of thing. And then came, Master of Puppets! No radio play, just underground between us all back then. The 80s were great.

BLACKENED without a doubt hands down. Jason wrote that song and it totally shows, its probably their heaviest song of all time, i love the fast aggression it has with intro riff, and then that pummeling verse riff, and then the "breakdown" section, then it segue's into an amazing bridge into epic solo, then towards the end of the solo the tempo picks back up and it catapults you back into the main riff! GOD what a fckin song! To see them play that live when they were in their prime would be a literal dream!
