This is such a deep and I formative lecture. It shines light on a lot of those WEIRD layers of typed of politeness that I hope, in the future we can get past if society becomes more equal. These weird roundabout ways of communicating make life unnecessarily hard for those who are either just socially awkward or even on the autism spectrum. I work in retail. I sociolect read a lot to make customers comfortable with communicating, but in this day and age I hope we can use less negative politeness, and more either direct communication or positive politeness with good will or good faith as the general assumption, in the spirit of generosity and honesty. In retail it's really the safest way to speak I've found. We require speed and efficiency in most situations, but avoid face threatening almost at all costs.

In the US, the "t" in "often" is not pronounced by the higher social classes. Also, men never roll their sleeves above the elbow in the higher classes. How a woman carries her bag can be clue. The presence or absence of expensive brand logos on clothing and accessories can certainly be an indicator of higher economic class but of lower social class. There are many things like these which don't really matter yet too many people silently categorize someone by them.
