Spreadsheeting is certainly a skill most aspiring game designers don't consider or underestimate.
You mentioned it in your "writing" section but I'd argue it's very different from what we usually refer to as writing and something that needs to be trained separately.

Yeah I sort of glanced over it as beeing good at "maths" (which I think spreadsheeting/statistics falls under) is often talked about in a game design context. So yeah you are definitely right!

You mentioned it's important to go to networking events, but I always find it hard to talk to people at those, everyone else seems to be talking to someone. For me it's hard to butt in and become part of that conversation, even if i know how to carry on the conversation once i'm part of it. Any suggestions as to what could be a good opener to get things started?

Networking is hard! Here are some tips: join groups of more then 2 people, as 2 people often tend to have more personal conversations. Then just wait until someone finishes their sentence and simply say something like "hey guys I'm just joining in if you don't mind!". It will help to know a little about who is walking around, and what the group was talking about (so listen in a little). Hope this helps, keep in mind; other people think it's akward too to network! So just go for it.

100% agree that coming up with ideas is overrated. Its one of those weird things that seems so important but when you actually get down to it isn't that useful. I remember in Uni I was always praised by my peers for always having new ideas but the vast majority were useless. One of the most important things I learned from Uni was that to have an idea and to actually do something with it are entirely different things. Anyone can have good ideas, only a few people can make them real.

Definitely the right take! An idea by itself is unfinished, and often takes a ton of work and practical insight to make work!
