It was my utmost pleasure to guide you through your formative years Lex. I love to still see you flourish and grow as the true game dev you so love to be. You have been committed, loyal, constructive, creative, disciplined, hardworking, (loud, yes people, Lex is loud) and very fun. FYI: all that is also (still) very inspiring to me. I think somewhere in you is a fine sense of when something is enjoyable and don't stop till you get something out of you hands. We wouldn't be where we are if it wasn't for you. Good to see you sharing our passion for development with the community.

+1 for going to a university/school. Yes, nowadays you can learn many skills online, but being among likeminded people who put their focus on the same things as you is extremely rewarding and sets you up with a network of friends for the future.

Definitely! And network (unfortunately) IS key in the games industry

My man I completely relate to the idea of going to school for what you love and getting depressed when the reality of the career path kicks in. I went to school for art but decided to try and be practical and go for graphic design and by the time I graduated I was so burnt out and over it. I ended up with a degree and didn't want to do anything with it so I just floated around on random restaurant and coffee shop gigs until I went back go school for programming. I am just picking art back up and it's immensely satisfying reclaiming that part of my identity and I'm making graphics for my own small game dev journey which is how I found my way here.

Great to hear your story! It's interesting how similar your start was to mine: Wanting to be an animator, getting into coding games and going to learn computer science.

Another vote for going to University. A good course will change the way that you approach problems that a bootcamp/self-taught won't teach you. You only learn that stuff when surrounded by others struggling along too.

Hell yeah, Jetpack! For some reason, I always thought the green diamonds you collect are like jelly pies you see in cartoons. Takes me way back (:

It was so simple yet so deep 🤣... I actually got stuck playing it for over an hour when I made the video... Good times!

thanks for the inspiring story, i am currently trying to do gamedev in my spare time as well but its hard!. And as a father of 2 kids its even harder because time is now a premium currency in my life :) . Even though i am a developer at a bank (also in the netherlands) the things that go with making a game are very diverse and difficult at the same time. as someone who loves to dive into code and architecture every time i see videos about art, animation or blender i just want to cry in a corner XD. unfortunately i dont have an extensive portfolio but i have to start somewhere.

Delphi is what Pascal became, there is still free Pascal available and the castle engine is a pascal based game engine.

Thanks for sharing! I love hearing the background on things from people. It's very grounding and helps my situation feel more similar to others online. I'm following the passion of game development myself, going to college in the fall this year. GMU has great networking, internship opportunity, and learning opportunity. I'm taking the advice to heart, getting experience and taking that risk of following my passion. :)

    Very interesting story.
I myself went into general backend programming. Currently back coding a bit for myself. Building a game engine from scratch, cause Im a dummy :-) But with 25y as a Software developer behind me, I should have manage.. even if it doesn’t turn out to be any good game :-) Gotta say I gotten pretty far, and it actually do work to render an animated character that walks around in a world. Got some simple collision dectection going on. All hand written.. cause Im a dummy 😂. Gotta clean that up and then thing of networking.. cause.. just cause.. I can I guess.. Anyhow, why Im doing this? Same as you, I wanted to do something creative, coding is my was to be creative. But I just was sitting in meetings, about where to place a button on a webpage, and rotting away… so I did what you shouldnt and quit. I got some runway, so no issues there.. and can still get some remote java backend work if beeded 😊. But main focus is to create a game.. ….engine.

Yes I heard of it! That was however more focused on installations and performance and thought in Utrecht as I recall. I studied GDD in Hilversum (Though it was the Utrecht School of Arts).
