  • The outgoing Edinburgh Garrison Sergeant Major has paid an emotional tribute to the people of Scotland as he reflected on his time in the role.
    Warrant Officer 1st Class Anthony Gibson from the Scots Guards took over the post in May 2021 and his responsibilities included overseeing the British Army's ceremonial duties in Scotland for the Queen's death last year.
    He said interacting with the crowds is what he will miss most, adding: "I'm not a Scotsman, but Scotland, Edinburgh, will forever be in my heart, always."

    I remember meeting the warrant officer during the Edinburgh tattoo last summer, I now stand 1 year before my own enlistment to the British army and would like to say that my meeting with him was a dining experience in my journey. I plan on serving in the royal regiment of Scotland which was inspired by the excellent parade he and his men designed and worked so hard on. Thank you for your service warrant officer 🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

      Do yourself a favour and don't join the infantry. If you really want to join the Army, get a trade. You'll come out with nothing from the infantry, if you do minimal service. Some brilliant times, great social times but nothing worthwhile to take back to the real world. Merchant navy is way forward.

    The best Warrant officer story I ever heard was one about the Sergeant Major of Mons Officer cadet school who spoke to one of the cadets who was a Prince from one of the middle eastern countries and was about to graduate as a commissioned officer. "Tomorrow you will be passing out of Mons as a second lieutenant and I will be saluting you and calling you SIR, but I just want you to know one thing, deep down inside I will always think of you as an idiot!

    • @trollmeistergeneral3467
      @trollmeistergeneral3467 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are many of these expressions, both from the former Mons Academy and of course RMA Sandhurst.
      One I always remember from the latter is the CSM (WO2) to the Officer Cadet:
      “I call you Sir and you call me Sir - the only difference is you damn well MEAN IT!”

      Your comment makes no sense whatsoever. Who wouldn’t call who Sir?
      I can only speak of my experience at the RMA Sandhurst. Officer Cadets were required to address WO 2s and above as “Sir.”
      C/Sgts and below were addressed as “Staff” by Officer Cadets. WOs and NCOs addressed cadets either as “Sir” or by their names. (Mr. XXXX - no women cadets at RMA Sandhurst in my day)!

    Britain must be the last place where the gentleman-officer breed still exists and old traditions are alive. Almost all other European countries lost this after WWI. The US might be the closest to Britain in maintaining traditions and the “officer class”, but America as a culture has never been particularly refined. Britain never ceases to amaze.

To this American my first reaction was some Irish...correct? I always think and believe truly that the U.K. is my country's best friend and ally, and at same time I have always had the highest respect and admiration for the Scottish troops with all their deeply impressive ceremonial and colorful display of marching in kilts, bagpipes, rifles, the mascot pony, etc. In other words the Scots' military traditions are at the very top imo.

      I'm not much good at accents, but to this Englishman he sounds more north-west of England. Or, on a second listening, I suspect Midlands (i.e. around Birmingham). And the UK doesn't have "several" different accents -- it has a very large number. The Wikipedia article on the subject says that "the United Kingdom has the largest variation of accents of any country in the world". Among the most colourful, I would say, are those of Norfolk and the north-east of England. The latter can be quite hard to understand for those who are not from that area.

    It's a shame more Englishmen and the "English" don't love Scotland as much as this chap. This is the problem for the Union and why the SNP has such a high following, now we see media backlash and the SNP dragged through the mud every day in the media over a few quid, just to keep the Union in place! It's simple it's in the bible Love Thy Neighbour! I've had some great English friends over the years and it's a shame, if we can get on, why can't the powers that be? Scotland needs a little more power bk and needs to feel its self worth, not just places like Edinburgh as a tourist destination. The whole Union needs looked at again and using wars to bring the Union closer is a terrible idea as well, as they do that as well when times are tough etc.
    If we aren't careful not only Scotland but England will lose its Identity as well and the Union will end up breaking up either by politics or by sheer force of rebellion. The people aren't stupid and they can see what is going on today, I don't even know half my street now and they have all been put there from supposed countries "in need". But it has changed the face of the landscape and not one smile or hello, and we think getting on with our neighbours the English can be hard? Aye just wait until you are a stranger in your own country...then it will be too late!
    Time to act now down South...or is it too late already? Looking at Downing St, I'd say yeah pretty close to being too late!
