Anna R. You compress and rebalance the horse so that his hind end lowers and his shoulder elevates. It makes the horse rock back and rebalance in anticipation of a change in gait or a change in direction. It is not a brake on the movement, it is a redistribution of balance that frees the shoulder.

I love bit less as a training tool as well for horse and rider because it can really discourage dependency on the hands/bit/bridle. You have to work that seat and those legs that much more. It would be nice to see some circuits allow bit less bridles into competition! I think it would help dressage go back to how it was meant to be.

@@missfay1723 of course. Any horse can become imbalanced if not trained well. But I'd say the PREs have a more natural tendency to be calm, especially compared with stallions of other breeds. Ugh I just love this horse so much Matt. He is so sweet and easy going. He wants to understand and learn and work for you. Even so young, he is very nice and relaxed. I rode a 5 yo horse at my stable who was scared of almost anything and after less than a year riding him, he rode M1 dressage and he is now so sweet that he is now a great schooling horse for people who want to learn more than just the basics. Emporio reminds me of this horse

His head carriage is so so much better. Also it's really good for him to reach long and low, especially in the canter like that. Most horses would be freaked out at first, but he seemed to really relax. Good job with him!

Your horse is so beautiful. You can see he trusts and loves you. If you never break that trust, this horse will always take care of you. He looked nice and relaxed in the bitless bridle. Love his reaching down into your hands. I love his walk and canter and would love to see more of his trot work. Like going from a medium trot into a lengthened stride and then back. You have done a great job with him and make a very nice pair. I think you will have a lot of fun together at the shows. You were lucky to find him. Lastly, his coloring is gorgeous with that tinge of rose gray in there. His condition and weight look great. I think you will have a lot of fun with him at the shows. He is a once in a lifetime horse.

I AM IN LOVE WITH EMPORIO. He's the most beautiful horse I've ever seen. All of your horses are fabulous, but there is something extra special about Emporio for me. I think it's his sweet, calm nature and how fluidily he moves AND his colouring slays me. He looks like a medieval knight's horse. I think it's the rust colouring -- whatever it is, I think he is stunning. And, yes, Matt, he is looking fuller/more filled out. The weight gain combined with his muscle development is making him look even more impressive. Btw, I think his head carriage changed quite a bit in the bitless bridle. Does anyone else see this?? I know from watching your lesson video with Emporio (& Emily?) that he naturally carries his head a little behind the 90 degrees. But that has been improving, and it was even much better in the bitless bridle. And, he really stretched himself out and relaxed more too. I know he had already had a warm up in the bit, but I think you might want to continue to train him in the biteless bridle to help him with his head carriage. Unfortunately, I don't think you can ride biteless in dressage competition, but maybe that will change or become an option eventually. Do you plan on doing dressage tests with him? Thanks so much for this. I could watch Emporio move forever.

I have a gaited horse who is a retired senior now, but we switched to bitless (Dr Cooks bridle) for our trail riding before he retired, it was quite a nice change and he would still gait with it after a bit of practice. Definitely an nice tool to have in your tack shed.

@@carolcarol3938 Yeah--I think it's the stallion hormones that are causing the crestiness in his neck, but the rest of him just hasn't quite caught up yet, because he's still kind of a baby. He's matured and evened out a lot though over the last few months!
