@Jofuku Jofuku asked in Japanese if this is an adaptation of a Brothers Grimm story. I did some Googling and learned that there are many variations on a folktale in which a magic mill churns out an endless amount of salt, but this particular version seems to be based on the Norwegian variation. I don't know when it was introduced to Japan.
Extremely good animation for the 1930s! Good morality tale too. The moral of the story is not, "Don't steal things"! No. It's, "Read the frickin' instructions!"
@marcboxler The Fleischer brothers did a lot of innovation in animation. They used constructed drawn paper smodeled backrounds for their cartoons,like Popeye the sailor,and used Rotoscoping also.
maybe they didnt know these buns ? so they couldnt ask for it. at least they were made by humans. I dont think they were hungry, they had an appetite for them. moreover they probably had enough treasures, so they could give away their handmill because they are generous, and not jealous, like the older brother...
８０年以上も前の無声映画なのに動きが滑らかだし、声が無くても話の内容が頭に心地よく入って来るのは本当に凄いです。貴重な映像をありがとうございます。
アニメが珍しい頃既にこんなに素晴らしいクオリティーの高いアニメが出来ている事が凄い戦争が無ければもっと早く日本アニメが世界一になっていたと思う

@Jofuku グリムではない。「塩を出し続ける臼」系のおとぎ話にはいろんなバリエーションがあるが、このバージョンはノルウェーのおとぎ話が元になっているようです。いつ日本に入ってきたのかわかりませんが。
このころの日本のアニメって、ディズニーとかのドタバタミュージカルスタイルの二番煎じばっかだと思ってたけど、こんなオリジナルな作風のもあったんだね
コマ数も多くてぬるぬる動くし、今のアニメにはない味があって面白い

No, it was made as a silent film. There is a version available on DVD that has music added.
