    Serious contender on my list.

    Do they heave to ok? Because the ballast is slightly higher do you have to reef earlier ? In strong winds ?
    edit,, don't get me wrong, l love virtually everything about Ovni boats. The safety factor especially. Massive peace of mind when out in the blue.

      and is it available as fixed keel version?

    • @alubatamerica
      @alubatamerica  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The centerboard doesn’t affect the ability to heave to. You can heave to with an OVNI.
      Generally speaking, the center of gravity is higher on a centerboard boat than on a fixed keel boat. However the stability is such that even if you put the mast in the water the boat will come back up. This is true with the centerboard up or down.
      Don’t forget the advantages : shallow draft (port, anchorages, upriver, channels etc.), escaping the weather downwind (no keel effect, way safer than a keel boat in very heavy weather), very stable downwind with centerboard up (in normal weather too), less friction surface motoring long distance with centerboard up that mean less fuel consumption at same speed.

      Only boats with quite long keels circa 1930 can heave to. It's an obsolete maneuver.

    Did I get this right that with the boat in higher waves you retract the centerboard and with this you reduce „luving“?

      Don't take it into "higher" waves.

    Don't try to cross oceans in such boats. If you want a shoal boat that can go offshore, get a catamaran 40' or bigger.

      These boats are built for global sailing. Jimmy Cornell sailed his Alubat around the world 5 times. Maybe you've heard of him?

      Hi Tim. I don't know why it is but you're all over these comments with negative points to make which are just flat-out wrong. 'My' centreboard equipped, internal ballast, aluminium exploration yacht, now in the hands of an intrepid new owner, has just sailed west across the Atlantic to the Caribbean, up to Canada, Greenland, through the North West Passage and is now working down to Seattle. Two sister-ships have done the same, in company, as the ice has permitted. Your comments are making you look like a disgruntled old man. To borrow a line from Obi Wan, would you like to take a moment to rethink your life? Hopefully, after pressing your reset button, you'll come back with some more balanced commentary to share with us, given all those decades of valuable experience you have. Knowing Jimmy, he'll be happy to learn from you as well. Regards, Rick.
