I rode behind the Dixiana Shay in 1967. I rode behind the Tuolumne Heisler in 1975. I enjoyed both rides greatly. I recommend this railroad to everyone.
Fantastic video! Loved the under the locomotive shot.. that was really impressive. That's a big load for that little engine to deal with, slipping on the wet rails.
Is there some sort of noise restriction which causes the engineers to like barely tug at the whistle, cause they aren't blowing them at all, maybe its cause of the kids? Idk
There are neighbors nearby and kids on the train. There are a lot of reasons why the whistle isn't wailed on. Also certain engineers don't like blowing the whistle loud there. Everyone has their own personal preference.
Thanks! Always wanted to see a Heisler hard at work, and this old girl is really earning her keep. If memory serves, Heisler's aren't' geared as low' as Shays, and have a higher top speed, correct?

I can now see why they add the plymouth to the back. It helps keep the Heisler from slipping and probably also helps keep the surging down.
Yeah. It is a cool oldest Heisler in the world locomotive at Roaring Camp.

It’s probably because Tuolomne was originally designed with a hooter in mind.

That is correct. In trade-off, though, Heislers have trouble pulling the same tonnage as a Shay.

The Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia and the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad in Washington both have three-truck Heislers in operation.
There is Shay #7 “Sonora”. It’s the only geared engine at Roaring Camp that is a Three-Truck.
