it's because every rhythm you play cuts down the list of good rhythms that might come next, and some rhythms cut it down to such a small number of possibilities that it's likely someone else hears the same thing coming, and plays it in unison with you. dabadabada - bah bah. you learn to take those chances a lot of the time and even if nobody hears and plays what you heard and played it's still gonna swing. if you do catch each other, then that's just a bonus

Love Rubin's solo, and the way DiRubbo (who appears to be on alto) lands on the notes.

No idea how no one is talking about the sheer difference between John Chin's solo and everyone else's. Along Came Betty is a hard tune. I put it up there with Tones for Jones Bones. Everyone else is hanging onto the changes. But John is legit dancing all over them so elegantly. The phrasing, the creativity, the space, the motific structures.
Mike hangs on during his solo, and he's an amazing player. The guitar player hangs as well, and it sounds good too. Kinda like when most people play Giant Steps. However, time stops during John's solo. Like, the show enters a completely different zone.
    What a treat!

In some context I remember that night. It was the start of the jam session. Maybe around 1 am. All of the musicians are fantastic players but Along Came Betty is a difficult tune. John Chin is a great pianist but don’t knock any of them. All of them are top call musicians all around the globe.

Nice visually - smooth - captures the atmosphere of the place. I guess you're on a tripod. Would have liked to have seen some other angles of the band - guitarist's face maybe! - but that's the trade-off.

horbergus I don't think he sounds exactly like Bird although I can tell that he was heavily influenced by him and I don't think that's a problem. When you study the greats some of their harmonic tendencies and phrasing are gonna stick with you. I think this dude sounds pretty original
