  • Beidh me ag chailleann tu, Peter. I shall miss you.
This is my tribute to Sherborne School in Dorset, England, narrated by Peter O'Toole. O'Toole and Robert Donat starred in the 1969 and 1939 versions, respectively, of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" based on the classic James Hilton novel.
The book and both films immortalized British boarding school life (two more were produced in recent years for British TV). Sherborne School, which was founded in 1550, was the setting for the fictional Brookfield Academy at which the character Arthur Chipping ("Mr. Chips") served as headmaster in the 1969 musical film adaptation.
The songs "When I Am Older" and "Fill The World With Love", which are featured in this video, were written by Leslie Bricusse and John Williams. Petula Clark and Peter O'Toole, along with the boys chorus at Sherborne School, perform "Fill The World With Love".

I don't think I have been able to keep my eyes dry each time I watch this classic. No shame, either, for old men are allowed to cry!

This was my father's favorite film. I saw it when I was 9 years old
I have worked at a military museum for 38 years and will retire shortly. After giving my all at the Museum this film has a special meaning to me

Your father and I agree. I saw the premiere in Tokyo in 1969 when I was 14 or so and fell in love with it (and Petula Clark). My father was in the Army and we were stationed there at the time. This song in particular is my favorite.

I have never seen this tribute before. It is exquisite. I nearly missed the last half because of my tears. I can hardly see the keyboard. Thank you so much VidBrats. Best 11 minutes I've had for a long time. I will share this with MrMarrs.

Same here🥺This movie ('69) has always been my favorite. I was eleven when it was new. It is perfect in every detail-- the gorgeous music, story, scenery, writing, production-- and the cast is perfect. For me, this wonderful movie exemplifies good-heartedness, devotion, purpose, and the fleeting nature of our lives. The song, "Fill the World with Love," is a beautiful prayer and reminder to us of what's important through it all. "And the greatest of these is Love." 1 Corinthians 13:13.

When I saw this film in 1969 I was in Junior High school and, like the boys of Brookfield, I admired Mr. Chipping/Peter O'Toole and even, vicariously, feared him just a bit. But I loved Mrs. Chipping/Petula Clark just like all of the boys in Brookfield. It's been a lifelong crush. Thanks for posting.
P.S. I always thought that Peter O'Toole should have taken over as Dumbledore when Peter's friend, Richard Harris, passed.

Oliver, from MGM media licensing. O'Toole and Clark's commentaries were originally recorded for the entertainment press by the publicity department for the film's initial promotion campaign.

Oliver, it's been so many years since I made this. I couldn't put my hands on the recordings right off. Probably on one of my hard drives. Unfortunately, you're unlikely to find it online anywhere. If I do locate them, I'll see if I can post them somehow and give you a heads-up alert.

It appears that there was a special 3 CD edition of the soundtrack released as an edition of Film Score Monthly and that there were some interviews contained on the additional discs in the set. Perhaps that's where you found them? Here's a link to it on Amazon where someone in the comments describes the content of the set: amzn.eu/9DFctOa
