We just returned from our first London visit, and all the time there I could not get this song out of my head. I would hum it on the tour bus. A timeless treasure. Thank you, Petula!
Glorious, lavish, spectacular, and tuneful. M/S Clark is, as always, terrific. Peter o' Toole is wonderful as Chips. One of my all-time favourite films. ❤❤❤❤❤.
TCM is showing it right now, the first time in a while that I've seen it. I know the non-musical version is highly praised, but Peter O'Toole touches my heart so deeply, where Robert Donat simply doesn't. I love the songs! I could never understand people disliking them or thinking they are weak. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this film, and I'll continue viewing it every time. Peter O'Toole is, as usual, brilliant, and Petula is delightful! I love their sweet, quiet romance.
I absolutely adore this movie I was in 8th grade and our class read this book channel 56 wlvi in Boston showed this movie on a Sunday afternoon and I will always love it esp. Walk through the world with me this story is intoxicating a famous celebrity falling for a headmaster of a boarding school love it
Great film, I had never heard of, then watched by accident on TCM one afternoon. Quite stunning. Of course, with music by Leslie Bricusse and John Williams, how could it be anything else.
This brilliant musical had the misfortune of being released in 1969 the same year that dolly was they are both beautiful but alas couldn't compete with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid Anthony newly lyrics where graceful and it is nice to hear a pre starwars Williams !
Sadly, big movie musicals were no longer as popular at the time, and lots of money was lost. Yet, all of those movies, including "Paint Your Wagon" and "Scrooge" (another Leslie Briccuse film) have earned an audience in later years.
Leslie Bricusse is brilliant , I just watched Victor Victoria last evening , I had not seen it since it's first screening at MGM , it put me in a fantastically happy , carefree mood, the way great musicals should !
Mark, did you work at MGM? I did for 18 years. I saw V/V for the first time at a screening on the lot in the main theater. Funny, I just watched it again a few nights ago. George Feltstein, hope I’m spelling his name correctly, gave me a VSH copy of Goodbye Mr. Chips several years after because I told him how much I liked it.
London in the 1960s was a very vibrant place and the public spaces were well kept, clean and orderly. I wonder what Petula Clark thinks of London now. London is not London anymore.
When I see Petula doung this number I can see why she was a choice to play Nancy in Oliver. And for the Corrie fans , Barbara Knox (Rita) is one of the ladies in Pink .
@mnactr The S/T was released a few years ago, as a 3CD set from Film Score Monthly. Well worth the money, you can still buy it as far as I can see. And I didn't know about the song being recycled for that musical - which sounds appropriate.
@mnactr Actually it was used by Leslie Bricusse in his Sherlock Holmes - the Musical. Even odder, it was not in the stage version of Goodbye Mr. Chips. Which was written before Sherlock Holmes!
Will they EVER release this wonderful soundtrack on CD? Is this film available on DVD yet? I love this version of the story. I believe this song was lifted from this movie in inserted into the Sherlock Holmes B'way musical BAKER STREET.
I'm trying to work out how a song about London's virtues is in a musical about a schoolteacher set entirely in a school near Norwich. O.O Actually, I'm trying to work out how said story is a musical at all.
THANKS ELIZABETH QUEEN AUNT BY GIVE THE OPOTUNITY OF FINE A MY MOTHER THANKS BY SUPPORT ME AND THANKS BY BELIVE ON ME THANKS AND HERE YOUR GRIL YES YES ATTE. MARTHA SOPHIA AND LONDON IS LONDON

Honour this lady with the title she truly deserves - Dame Petula Clark
My favorite number from the movie. I still sing it when I think of London!!
Never get tired of watching this
So many of these wonderful 'older' movies we don’t get to rewatch...😢
I love this version of Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Especially for the sparkling presence of Petula Clark. She and Peter O'Toole were wonderful together.
Great film...never got it's due and Peter and Pet were so wonderful.....talk about being underrated!
You are absolutely correct.
The most sincere and convincing portrayal of love, well, I thought so
The film Goodbye Mr. Chips is one of the gems from my childhood. I cry buckets each time I watch it.
Really beautiful movie both were fantastic
A great production moment for a vastly under-rated film.
always liked this one a Pet Clark fan here ❤❤❤❤❤
indeed she was brillant in Sunset- and she was terrific in this film- what a stuning production! Great score, Peter and Pet rocked!

this is so something Andrew LLoyd would do- look at the production values...and dancing guards- it screams money and WE LOVE IT!
Great film, I had never heard of, then watched by accident on TCM one afternoon. Quite stunning. Of course, with music by Leslie Bricusse and John Williams, how could it be anything else.

OK, this number is just a knockout- give em the ole razzle dazzle!
A good old Broadway theater march! Noel Coward also wrote "London's a bit of all right."
Please download the entire movie...it was on YT...but apparently, someone deleted it! A true classic which I have seen many times!
we have it here on dvd....would that work across the pond- come on everyone shold have this in their collection!
Magnifica
BRAVO!
It's extravagant even by music hall standards, surely!!
It's the pictures where anything is possible..
London in the 1960s was a very vibrant place and the public spaces were well kept, clean and orderly. I wonder what Petula Clark thinks of London now. London is not London anymore.
i love london...
So this is where the song from Sherlock Holmes the Musical originally came from. Nice. :)
A great song for a great city. How nostalgic I feel. But alas,I fear that the London of the song is no more...
When I see Petula doung this number I can see why she was a choice to play Nancy in Oliver.
And for the Corrie fans , Barbara Knox (Rita) is one of the ladies in Pink .
It keeps being 're-scheduled'. Fingers crossed a DVD will see the light of day.

completely agree.
Anyone have the full lyrics that match this? Other lyrics on the internet don't match or are incomplete
@mnactr Actually it was used by Leslie Bricusse in his Sherlock Holmes - the Musical. Even odder, it was not in the stage version of Goodbye Mr. Chips. Which was written before Sherlock Holmes!
come on team GB london 2012
I love how unrealistic musicals are in films. That would be the entire budget of the musical spent in this one song!
Fun Fact LONDON IS LONDON also is in the musical Sherlock Holmes in a slightly altered version
Will they EVER release this wonderful soundtrack on CD? Is this film available on DVD yet? I love this version of the story. I believe this song was lifted from this movie in inserted into the Sherlock Holmes B'way musical BAKER STREET.
The did and extra unreleased material on the 2 cd set
@mnactr There is a 3 CD set available featuring all the music from the film Goodbye Mr Chips, try Amazon.com
I like this version better than the 1939 original. Shame on me? 🤣
I am making a video of my pics from my trip to London and would like to put this song behind it. Anybody know where I can get an Mp3 file of this?
@39rc6cf I would not compare them. Two different things. Both beautiful.
Ahaha, 3.07 a greek goddess with a british flag.
you can imagine julie andrews in this role. but well done petula.
Petula was chosen on the strength of her performance in Finian’s Rainbow
Petula: more down to earth than Julie
and your're point? IT'S A MOVIE.....FANTASY?
I'm trying to work out how a song about London's virtues is in a musical about a schoolteacher set entirely in a school near Norwich. O.O
Actually, I'm trying to work out how said story is a musical at all.
The film version was partly set in London, it was different to the original ,they made Katherine a music hall star
Dusty Springfield would have sang a good version of this, being a London Girl herself?
THANKS ELIZABETH QUEEN AUNT BY GIVE THE OPOTUNITY OF FINE A MY MOTHER THANKS BY SUPPORT ME AND THANKS BY BELIVE ON ME THANKS AND HERE YOUR GRIL YES YES ATTE. MARTHA SOPHIA AND LONDON IS LONDON
Erm, I didn't say it was a bad thing, don't be so blooming aggressive! Honestly, some people!
I fear that anyone visiting the British capital today is more likely to find themselves in Londonistan. So sad.
