    I'm a Route 66 FANATIC! I travel alone & have the best time. I've made many friends on the road. The real genuine folks that run the Mom & Pop places keep Route 66 alive & would love your patronage & the sharing of stories about the "Main Street Of America".
    On facebook you can join several Route 66 groups who would be happy to share stories/photos/maps & can direct you to the best books to guide you along the "Mother Road".
    Find me, Penny Black, on facebook. Look for me under a neon motel sign

      Hey Penny, it's Nolan Stolz--we met at the conference a couple of months ago. The video you commented on 8 years ago was filmed in 2011--I can't believe it's been over 10 years!

    Well, in 1992 I entered Rt66 near Oatman. It was the 66th Anniversary. It was June 6, I was going 66mph at 6:06 AM with my 6 yr old son. And I was 42 yrs old. (4+2=6) I had a 1959 Corvette. It was one lonely drive. Didn't see a soul. All the way to Seligman. It was Very green that year and Flies were Everywhere. It can never happen again. So, I got my kicks

      TheHypnotstCollector 1959 adds up to 24, so divide that by 4 numbers and you come up with 6.

    I used to drink in the old bar in Glenrio. I worked on a ranch in Adrian, TX (dry). It simply had a small bar and a pool table. It would fill up with cowboys on Fri. and Sat. nights. No girls just cowboys. Beer flowed freely and fights were frequent. Occasionally bikers would pull in and it meant that it was time to leave.

    You did a great job. I've been up and down 66 a few times. You hit a lot of the high points and gave a good sense of the journey. I cannot the imagine the douches that downed this. That town square in Springfield, Mo. is where Wild Bill Hickok shot it out with Dave Tutt in one of the very few documented Old West High Noon gunfights

    I love all about Route 66 and also drove on parts of it 4-5 times now. My favorite was a road trip between Texas and Las Vegas, Nevada (there's a video on my channel here: th-cam.com/video/5IMmr3w_8Ys/w-d-xo.html). If you have sometime, check it out... I'd love to know your thoughts! :) Cheers!

      just watched it! before they built the bridge (from which you viewed the Hoover Dam), drivers would have to go along the 2-lane road curving through the mountains then across the top of the dam, waiting for tourist pedestrians. I would sometimes take forever to get from Kingman to Boulder City because of that!

    • @RenataPereiraTV
      @RenataPereiraTV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I know! :) I drove there several times too before the bridge. Actually the first time I saw the bridge was while shooting that video, and it was a huge surprise! But in my case, as a tourist, it was always fun to drive across the top of the dam! I loved!!!! :) All the best to you and enjoy the holiday season!

    Both were Phillips 66 Batwing style gas stations. I want to see Cars now.

    The other little piece of trivia that I read about Glenrio was that like your said, the New Mexico side had the beer joint because the Texas side was "dry" but the Texas side had the gas station because New Mexico gas taxes were much higher than Texas.

    Great video !!! Now, make arrangements to visit Fort Irwin & the NASA's Tracking Stations. The old Apollo dishes have been scrapped, however I believe that the main operations building and the NASA's station directors office/cafeteria buildings remain as does the old operations building of the Mojave STADAN (ATS pre-commercial synchronized TV satellites).

      it's a strange assumption that people would only drive westward on the 66, but for decades the 66 was traveled by vacationers going both ways. also, there were plenty of people that started out west and moved east

    Thanks for posting, this is great! I've always wondered what it would be like to drive on old 66!
    Did you drive on a "sidewalk highway" segment at any point? I believe there were a few places, including somewhere in Oklahoma, where only one lane of the highway was paved. The road itself is only about 9 feet wide, and motorists had to pass each other by using the gravel shoulders!

    • @brianpaulbrundage
      @brianpaulbrundage 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure...that bit of really early road in OK including that one bridge was very narrow - if there was any oncoming traffic we surely would have been in the gravel.

    Hi Ian,
    I'll respond similarly to how I responded to an earlier poster:
    I highly recommend this book: "EZ66 Guide for Travelers" by Jerry McClanahan. It has turn-by-turn directions with choices of which alignment of the 66 to take. It also lists buildings and things to look for. My GPS was there to keep track of where we were rather than telling us where to turn. The signage is pretty good along the road---you'll be fine.

    Min 32:14: The 4 women should have called the old truck "Tow Motto" (instead of "Tow Tater"), for copy write reasons.
    "Tow Motto goes with Tow Mater", and, "Tow Potto goes with Tow Tater". They are 2 different veggies. The ladies have it apples and oranges.
    You should give those 4 ladies a call, and throw it across them. :)

    Love the video, but it makes me so sad. I grew up in Bristow, Okla. in the 50's and 60's. The town was booming. Business's were thriving. New business's were moving into town. No one wanted for a job. And then,,,, they built the interstate high way just outside of town. It was the death sentence for that town, and so many others. Since then, most of the stores have closed. Mostly empty buildings along main street. All the factories have closed, and a good part of the population has moved on. It was middle Americana, then,, mostly sad ghost towns now.

    The incomes those mechanics had working out of small shops would be a story in itself. Doubtful any of them had sufficient air conditioning. Getting parts would involve at least a two day stay in the bed bug motel for the customer. Average parts run would allow for a 100 mile round trip. The golden era of unreliable cars may return in order to push everyone into EV.

    We have, what I believe to be, the last section of Route 66 out here on the East Coast, but I can't say for sure if it is the same "Route 66" that you traveled. Would it have been possible to continue on to the East Coast on the old "Route 66?" As I sit here and watch this, I find myself wondering what factors made "Route 66" obsolete. At one time I thought it was purely the increase in the number of cars on the road, but I think that is only ONE factor. Another would be the range and dependability of "cars" in general. You could go longer distances later on, without the need of gas stations for fuel or repairs, and knowing that, travelers wanted a faster way to get where they were going, instead of going thru every small town in America. Just "thinking out loud."

    • @styxmahler
      @styxmahler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nutmegger1957 , the 66 in SC is a state highway that has nothing to do with the old U.S. Route 66 (in fact I drove by it just the other day). The famous 66 never went further East than Chicago.

    Not because of the story itself, but because of what the movie means! Not many people will ever recognize the real message of the movie...
    Such a great cast! Great to hear Paul Newman and George Carlin again!
    I got many references, but probably missed a few. After finishing your video, I might watch the movie again...
    One day I'll be visiting all of these places. And that's probably why I appreciated the movie so much. I already have an itinerary ready for the trip, so, most of these places were already marked.
    Just finished your video. Really nice!! I'm going to download it and keep it here to watch again!
    Oh, and the twin bridges are not "twins" anymore....

    Great video guys! I live a couple of blocks off RTE 66 in Kingman AZ and always love watching these informative videos of the old road. I am curious how you knew all that info on what to look for in each city and the "old" sections of the Mother road? Thanks again for a wonderful video.

      We had the Route 66 EZ guide that pointed to some of those places, and then we'd look up info later (mostly google research). Other times, we found a particular place interesting and then we'd look it up later.

    Did y’all eat a wild burrow burger at The Oatman Diner? Mmmmm.... with a side of snake fried rattlesnake, cain’t be beat. Those mucho burgers in Santa Rosa make great feral burrow burgers. They don’t have the snake fried rattlesnake though. Y’all do know how Tucumcari got its name, don’t y’all? Well, there was an old prospector who had a burrow he named Tucum. He could carry any load the prospector put on him. Better’n a 4x4. Everybody around them parts started saying, “Tucum carry it.” Local Indians just would say, “Tucum cari.” Been called Tucumcari ever since. One problem they still have in them parts up to this time, is nary a tree big enough to take a piss behind. That’s why they called them dry river beds “rivers.” I know that old boy's wife was happy about that whale gift. Women love gifts like that.

    The state's really got away with robbing these towns of business and development. There was no impact survey for economic compensation for deviant noneconomice malfeasance. The route 66 should of recovered 30% of highway &freeways tax money for the loss of use. Involvement pays off! Jim Rice

    • @jonthebru
      @jonthebru 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree Jim, but I don't think they had such sensibilities back then. There was definite competition for having the Interstate come near your town but I don't think any of the losers had a forum to file a grievance. In 1963 my family went on a camping trip across the country (across the Northern plains.) I have memories of going along perfect new highways which would abruptly stop and we would drive along a gravel road next to the new portion being built by crews of men.

    Nice video guys. Only thing I found puzzling was:
    How was the Cozy Cone in Cars movie inspired by BOTH the Wigwam Motel AND the Blue Swallow Motel?

    • @styxmahler
      @styxmahler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question! The Wigwam of course was the traffic cone/teepee resemblance. But, the Blue Swallow influence is more subtle--it was the neon, specifically the "100% Refrigerated Air" sign

    Great job on this video. I'll bet the trip was a blast. I'm wondering where you got the history of some of these places, I assume you spent time in some of the towns to look up the history of some of the buildings to find out when they were built and what different businesses they've been inhabited by over the year. However, how did you find the history of some of the buildings that were in virtual ghost towns? Thanks!

    • @styxmahler
      @styxmahler  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ghosttowns.com is a good resource for ghost towns (used that for Correo and Suwanee), and some info can be found in books on Route 66, for instance, "Ghost Towns of Route 66." I got some information from the EZ guide and from David Wickline's "Images of 66" book.
