I did the primitive thing starting as a kid over 50 years ago, started out long before it became a thing - very few books, no internet, almost no interest by the public. Only information in real time was in museums. About 20 years ago I taught some boy scouts knapping and how to make atlatls, and a few went on to college later on and started an atlatl group there, which started "atlatl olympics".... glad to see this stuff is now more in the public eye. I am shocked how flintknapping took off like it did - great flintknappers now everywhere. I know our ancestors are smiling.
For sure. It’s been a way of life for me before there was internet…all books and bush time. I feel fortunate to have grown up when I did. Appreciate you watching 🤙
That’s pretty badass, everyone I watch a video I’m impressed, sure would like to see your take on a brush shelter, or a simple primitive super shelter…..it’d be cool to hear more explanation why you did what you did and some alternatives you did not make, history and archaeology, myths stories about whatever your making, stories about modern humans using such things et cetera……god bless
I’ll be sure to include more explanation in future videos and perhaps a shelter build! I have one planned and coming soon. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
I started experimenting with different Atlatl designs years ago . I made one from the broken limb of an Osage self bow and discovered the flex and reflex of the limb increased my range and velocity significantly over the basket maker style Atlatl .
Thanks so much, Donny for the video.. A long lost forgotten hunting tool and offense-defense weapon. Ya most definitely keeping the primitive skills alive in everything you do and make from the natural Earth 🌎...keep those videos a coming, I enjoy them all.
I love the irony of watching the construction of stone age tools on a cell phone. What an amazing way to transfer ancient knowledge! Great video and beautiful work👌
Beautiful wood, I have made a couple Atlatls and they work surprising well, make sure to check your laws I got in trouble with the DNR using one to get fish.
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks I'm only 32 I'm really into native Americans my family has a cemetery in Cherokee North Carolina I have never seen . I really wish I could find stone's like you collected in my area I live next to Athens Georgia. I have to usually have to travel to find any.
@ in all honesty. There are different stones pretty much everywhere that could be worked into a lithic tool. Pecking, grinding and Knapping are all ways to get the results you need. Research what early cultures use in any area as a way to locate the source stones for tool making 🤙
Check it out. I know Georgia has a golden/honey/mustard Jasper and a type of chert as well. I can recall the name of the chert, but if you google it I have no doubt it will pop up🤙
The skills of athleticism in this video I can’t believe what I’m looking at the way that your hands wheel is Adal and are able to make it work. I am truly inspired to become you. Thank you for what you do Donny amen.
Well i Turn on ytb and boom 16 sec ago. Im going back to the village, I plan to make a atlatl, always having problems with the back end where the dart goes, hope this Will help, thank your brother, greetings from Portugal 🇵🇹
What are you using for the dart shafts? I've searched all over Northern NM and the best I can do is wild rose with scarf joints. FYI, NMGFD does not recognize Atlatl for lawful taking of game.
Cane or willow are my dart shaft choices. Good thing I’m not hunting with there. In all honesty I avoid hunting in NM except for elk. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
Awesome video man, was a pleasure to watch you work! I have to say, when you think about it, the materials might have changed but the processes and tools really haven't all that much have they? From Stone age to Metal tools I mean. In a way nothing really changed apart from finding better materials to make the tools out of. Looks like it took a good long while to do though!
Very cool. I want to learn more! Do you know of any resources or books where i can learn more on how to make them? Thanks and keep up the amazing work.
I must say I like the tools best that are made from lower quality materials. I appreciate what humans can achieve even under less than perfect conditions.
My lord, I appreciate the handwork that went into building this, an you definitely are living the life of our ancestors this way, an I can't even imagine the time it took to do it this way. Roughly how long did it take to do it the primitive way, vs using modern steel tools as in an axe, hatchet, knife curiosity got the best of me on the time it would take. Thx for the vid, really cool tho.
I would say the primitive method took two days, 8 hours and some change. I was loosing light when I was going to throw, so I pushed the throwing and last few steps to day two as well. Appreciate you watching 🤙
I used Juniper for the Atlatl, Fallow deer for the spur, pine pitch for the glue, cane for the dart and sandhill crane feathers for the fletching. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
Great video Donny! What were the shafts of the darts made from? I’m in central New Mexico. Around here tamarack might be used. But I’m wondering if mullein stalks aren’t what you used? Northern NM, you have the elevation and climate for mullein. South of Albuquerque there’s river cane to be had.
I was near El Morro on my property not far from the Ice Caves. Cane was my dart wood selection. Mullein…I’ve never had success with darts and arrows as it’s hollow and can’t take an impact…however if you cut it wet, let it dry over a chunk of time you can get some decent foreshafts. Much respect and appreciation 🤙
Awesome work fella. Bet a few of those "ass shots" would have taken down most deers. Do you work the darts green? Does the moisture help with the straightening? Just sourced some antler tips so might give this a go. Hope you have a good holiday season. 🤙
Hey there Donny dusk I have to ask does your girlfriend have a TH-cam to help teach is some remedies I got the flu and just stopped puking now. Atomic aches and would like to know what I can do to recover
The Skill and Craftmanship that goes into your projects, is next level! I even made the wife watch!🤭🤜🤛🤙🤙🤙
Hahaha. Awesome appreciate you and your wife watching. It means a lot. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
I subscribed so I can make my husband watch 😊

I started experimenting with different Atlatl designs years ago . I made one from the broken limb of an Osage self bow and discovered the flex and reflex of the limb increased my range and velocity significantly over the basket maker style Atlatl .
Awesome. I imagine the limb would have to be pretty thin the get some flex in it. Appreciate you watching 🤙
That was just killer man.
Great work!
I’m glad you enjoyed it. 🤙 Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
Great job Donny, the Spanish feared the Atalatal, it would penetrate their Armour, they had no answer to this weapon.
It’s a classic and goes back several thousands of years. It’s a history maker no doubt. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
It's called a shield
That was cool. I enjoyed that
Awesome. Appreciate it greatly. Folks have asked for a while and I’m glad it was there for you. Thanks again🤙

Hey donny. I grew up reading the clan of the cave bear series. Bet u did too?
I read it no doubt. Great series. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks one of my favourite series, do u have any good reads u would recomend?

The spur is important. Not a long spur and it should fit just in the back of the dart. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
very cool

How often do you re-sharpen the adze?
It’s hard to say, but once it gets dull. Had it for a year or so…sharpened once. Appreciate you watching 🤙
Thanks Donnie.
Much respect to you also.
Me grinning to myself and wondering: "Where would Donny get his pigeons?"😂
Sandhill crane…no pigeons, but if I did…right off the street Appreciate you watching 🤙
LOL! I guess I should have waited till the end of the video before I asked that question
Appreciate you watching. Thanks.
You should do a video making a flint tipped bow awl...but I imaging real life yer kit the fire drill and bow awl would be the same thing
No problem. Much respect and appreciation. Thanks again 🔥
Why is the handle thick? Doesn't that contribute to wind resistance ?
No and I have big hands…I need something to hold onto. Appreciate you watching 🤙
@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks makes sense
Were two-piece spears ever made for the atlatl?
Hahaha. No worries 🤙
Yeah, If you mean a hard wood with the point hafted on the front of the dart.
@@Jakes3130 these are called foreshafts…I have a video coming out on those next week.
@@DonnyDustsPaleoTracks cool! I'll be waiting
What would the ancients have used for fletching if the were unable to find feathers?
Feathers or a longer dart with a tapered end acting like a fletching. Appreciate you watching 🤙
Stone 🪨 🪓 Axe made fast work out of that Limb D.D. 👏🏻 Nice Job Marine, 🇺🇸🤝🏻☘️
Thanks. Much respect and appreciation!
One thing I've always wondered is HOW THE HELL did our ancient ancestors figure out fletching!??
Awesome video as always! 🙏
Good question! I say from birds. They probably thought if they can fly with feathers why not a 6 foot dart. Appreciate you watching 🤙
When do you think the first was made and used. Absolutely 💯 best video I have seen.
It’s hard to say but I believe the atlatl has been used for thousands of years. It’s the original long range hunting weapon. Appreciate you watching 🤙

Green wood that I can straighten and work is my preferred. It gets a solid dart that is straight. Give it a go!!! Appreciate you watching 🤙
😄👍🤙
🤙🔥🤙
The part part of Atlatl is you dont have to use a range pot
Appreciate you watching 🤙

All that firewood behind you was cut with a modern saw. Cheating. Haha jk
I brought it from home. I don’t like cutting trees down on my property.
First time watching a long form video from you, I must say, I'm not a fan of ASMR style videos
