WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know. - แนวปฏิบัติและการใช้ชีวิต

No washington😔
Hey, if you take a couple of those quartz crystals and either smack them together in the dark Or slide them along each other. In a dark room they will produce a light for a split second it’s really cool
@livegameseverynight9098 Yes. So will flint and chert.
@@GhostofJamesMadison There's lots of knappers and private knap-ins in Washington. I only list the ones open to the public. You gotta make more friends. 😁
@@KnapperJackCrafty wouldn’t those be sparks though? It looks different to me
Knapping a quartz crystal sounds cool and exotic. Result looks like knapped glass.
Yes
You have to admit quartz does have a certain allure to it. That’s the best point I’ve ever seen made from it.
YES!!! 100% of the results with 1/8th of the effort.....
Too bad people are "hide bound" by "morality" and other such nonsense.....😪😪
Sounds kinda pointless to me, but whatever.
I thought you said kidnapped glass for a moment
Another masterpiece. Thanks for showing this.
Beautiful material! Here in central Georgia we find a lot of crystal and milky quartz points. You knapped that material like nobodys business!! Excellent job!!
Thank you!
Growing up in Alabama I have over the years found about 6 or 8 points made of quartz. Every single one was rounded off. I found out they were not arrow heads but atlatl points from between 2 to 4 thousand years.
We used to find all kinds of points.
Great channel, I used to do a little napping been so long.
I am one of those people you talked about that clicked because I saw the thumbnail! However, I watched all the way thru and was amazed. I have seen flintknapping before, but you have incredible skills! You created an absolute work of art! Subscribed!!
Awesome! Thank you!
Amazing skill Patrick! I’ve seen a few quartz projectile point but none as thin or straight edged.
I'm already gold wire wrapping it in my mind ,😅 beautiful.
Im learning how to make gold wire the incan way. I found out stone hammers are really good for working gold.
First thing I thought was ice cube 🧊! Turned out a beauty! Love it. Looks like it’s bouncy material. Awesome work!
Bouncy is a good word for it.
With quartz being in the group of some of the strongest minerals, it's crazy to see it knapped! It's strength around here is seen in it being one of the very few rocks that survived the glaciers without rounding off. Some very fine work Jack!
Thank you
We find arrowheads here made from Herkimer diamonds,Some mines are 8 miles from me.
Really? That's awesome
Really enjoy watching your videos. Enjoy watching to see what you are creating. You seem to bring out the beauty of an old rock.
Thank you very much
@@KnapperJackCrafty Thanks for the wonderful video, and a huge thanks for not ruining it with crappy background music.
I don't know why some people feel compelled to add annoying background music throughout their videos.
Thats the nicest crystal point I've ever seen. Love the been bag, great idea.
Bean bag?
Round stack of leather.
@@karlbarros2849 The hand pad is leather on wood.
Thank you.
Aesop & his tortoise , never broke any records !!! Just a good solid finish !!! Bravo Crafty !!!
This is such a wonderful skill and what a treat to watch such artistic craftmanship unfold in real time. Thank you kind sir!
You're very welcome
Impressive Patrick, not easy stuff to knap.
all those big chunks on the floor if you put them in a clear plastic jug or bowl and shake it they will light up... also if you strike the quarts in the right direction in the dark it will light up...
Ah yes. That's true. I forgot about that.
Cold light, yes
Very cool
Thanks. I try.
Gorgeous skills! ❤
Thank you! 😊
I’m always amazed by your ability to make beautiful points out of such small pieces of stone.
Thanks, John. When I first started, all I had to knap was the debitage from other knappers, so I learned to "maximize."
I've got to say that's one of the finest crystal points I've ever seen created. I'm suffering through some electric blue from the Davis Creek. I'm going to send you some of that sometime. I've never seen you work any. It's the worst stone ever because it has bands of stunning color that are never situated advantageous like. Most of the time the blue ends up in the bucket and we end up with a clear point. Unless you slab it.. but that's not really knapping.
Hehe 😁
A true peice of art my freind, your dedication to the skill speaks for itself.p.s a wonderful memorizing video.
We find a decent amount of projectile points made out of these up here in Ontario! I've yet to find any spalls in my rockhounding excursions that is even close to knappable, but they do look great when tumbled (and are very popular with the crystal-inclined ladies haha)
Yes 😁
Ice arrows. They do double damage against desert creatures ;) great work, amazing skill set you have.
Double damage on fire elementals, too. 😁
I have absolutely no idea how you napped that quartz so thin and fine. It’s a miracle if that stuff doesn’t just pop apart
Sometimes, it's knappable. I think I got lucky with this batch.
I have a collection of arrowheads that were made from heavily fractured quartzite by historic Native Cherokee. They did it all the time. I have seen Iroquois (I am part Seneca & Mohawk) points made from Shale, even. The edges were not sharp, but they had a point.
Pointy points are good. They will getcha.
No puedo creerlo!!! es usted un Maestro!!!
Oh Yeh! Masterful suspense story!
Very very nice, Patrick. Well done!
I never thought of using an actual crystal spike to make a point, that's pretty awesome!
I found a crude crystal point in my backyard vegetable garden decades ago. Your ability to knap this material into masterworks is astounding. This video made my day. Knaping Kudos to you Master.
Wow, thank you
Impressive!!! I've got a nice chunk of quartz crystal I picked up in Arkansas. Was a bit hesitant to try and reduce it down to a point but I've got to give it a try now. Love the way your point turned out!!!
Thanks. Go for it. I either got lucky, or this stuff isn't as bad as the quartz crystal I've knapped before.
Absolutely beautiful. Really interesting material properties!
I agree
You never cease to amaze me!! Beautiful point!!!
Thank you 😊
Wow what an incredible result! You should try knapping an amethyst crystal because a point would look even more exotic in transparent purple.
Yeah, eventually, someone will send me one to knap to torture me. 😅
Masterfully done. Cheers
Thank you
Fantastic job fella!
Thats some pretty cool stuff, nice point Patrick 👍
I have knapped rutilated quartz crystal before, it is harder than obsidian to get good flakes but worth it in the end. I just start with making a pre-form of what I want to make because I have a lapidary shop.
Nice
Beautiful work😊
Thanks
Very nice point good work Jack had to watch today a little at a time was sick today
A little trick I learned from my grandfather. If you keep a high quality 2"or 3" soft bristle paint brush at your side and use it to brush off your hands and clothing you wont keep driving those shards into your hands and fingers all the time!
True
I had no idea that a quartz point could look that good
It makes a difference when it's good quality stone.
This is cool that you tried this. I've often wondered if it was possible. Waxy, glassy, smooth and featureless..
I have only recently started to what napping TH-cams. This TH-cam makes me wonder is the quartz crystals can be heated to some inordinately high temperature and “heal” the internal cracks.
Thank you for producing this TH-cam. Great information as always.
I wish I knew. But if I were to guess, I don't think heating would heal the cracks.
Heat treatment may really increase the workability of quartz 🤷 but realistically like he said sell the big beautiful ones to collectors. Probably a bit easier 😅
Beautiful . 😎👍
Crafty !!! This piece had your name written all over it my Bro !!! Could this be a Magnum Opus !!!
Thats really nice. Looks very challenging. First one ive ever seen .👍👍
It wasn't too bad, actually.
Piece of advice? Wear an apron or use a piece of buckskin across your knee/upper leg to keep those tiny flakes and the stone dust from working through your cloths and ending up in your skin and the washing machine and all your other cloths! That stone dust can really embed itself into ones pores if you're not lucky!
Yes
super cool man!!
Thanks!
No problem!
You've got a great skill, and do awesome work.....🤯👍✌️
Thank you
Would have been cool to see a couple of strikes in the dark. Being a quartz crystal it should be sparking with each strike.
Fantastic!
Thanks
Good job knapping. I can’t show it here but I’ve got a photograph of a Quartz Crystal Clovis point from Hot Springs Arkansas…by Forrest Seargent….
Nice!
Awesome thanks for sharing
You're very welcome
Nice! Always wondered if it could be done, now I know 😎
You and me both 😁
Impressive.
Thanks 😊
awesome job!!
Thanks!
“Internal cracks”
Story of my life.
You too?
@KnapperJackCrafty Me three
I did not know you could do this with quartz! That’s good to know.
It is possible but not probable. It depends on the stone.
Beautiful point! You are a very skilled knapper. I have found many quartzite points, but have need a flaked quartz crystal point. I could not believe you made that of that thick crystal. It sure doesn’t flake like flint or obsidian/glass.
Have to cut on the tile saw to get a good cleared spot.
That makes sense
I've quite a bit of quartz on my property, Some veins I can break off in Football size chunks, but most of it is the milky white quartz, some is clear. I'm fully crippled now but I can see if my sons have time to poke around this spring once the snow clears, We still have at least two feet of snow but it's hitting the low 30's now so it won't be too long!
Cool. 👍
Beautiful..
Thank you
Great job
Thanks
Very skilled and excellent work.
Thank you
I think those ancient examples from Spain have created a desire to possess the unpossessable !!!
Oh yes
Wonderful
Thank you
Those quartz crystals look so much better than the crude finished quartz points i find the natives left. You wonder how they napped them and how they used them afterwards some looked like they could be shot around corners lol
I agree. I've seen several Quartzite arrowheads like the ones you're talking about.
well done! Please be sure to wear a mask... the dust not good to breathe. ❤
Ok
Very nice.
I love napping
Amazing
Thanks
Idk why TF!! TH-cam didn't send me this notification! YT is being a Big Richard these days. Awesome point Man. Great views too. Wish all 20k had hit the like button
Very nice Mr. Crafty
Thank you
Glass has no order, crystals do, so will be tough.
Yup
Wow, nice
Thanks, Yun
I rather enjoy the reassuring "ya" you float by in your lingo😂
Good to know. 😊
That looks great for the first or the 50th.
nice
Quartz is piezoelectric. I'll bet if it had been possible to knap that in the dark, anyone watching would have seen little flashes of light every time you popped a flake off lol. That would've been considered magic back then 😊
True, but the sparks thing actually happens with chert and flint as well. You can see it in a few of my older videos.
Never thought about it, but its basically very strong glass.
Yes
Ive got a washita more than half the size and made of garnet. Mind boggling
something ive wanted to learn todo
Neat
There was one old Indian The mysterious Traveller was told who possessed arrows and Spears made of pure Crystal that attracted small lightning bolts on stormy nights
Interesting. Yikes
I myself found a solution many years ago , felt marker ! I also would use tar on my shot side , this seems to stop the conicoidal fracture from override.. toothbrush cleans up residual ink Left in the fracture zones. Ps my inked areas look like this L 2 R --)))))))-(((((((( . Badgers Den
I don't understand this.
Probably seismic cracks !
Possible. Although I don't think there's much seismic activity where these were found.
Yeah, quartz is weird to work with because it has that crystal lattice that is not at all like ordinary rock grain and definitely not like glass.
Those ripples you mentioned are known as spiral or conchoidal fracture, where the lattice structure kind of grabs the applied force and won’t let it break cleanly unless it’s at just the right angle.
I got interested in knapping while watching a Navajo guy knapp pieces of old bottle glass at a kind of powwow at Indian School Park in Phoenix Arizona. I asked him about quartz and he shook his head and laughed, and said I should give it a try.
I never did near as well as you did. More practice maybe?
Yeah, it usually boils down to practice.
For your final thumbnail, just go back to the beginning of the video and take a still of the ORIGINAL Quarts you used for the arrow head and merge/combine the two! That way you have a true before and after!
Do you know of an Android phone app that produces only thumbnails, does it quickly, and is simple to use? I haven't found one yet. I should probably ask Grok. 😅
@@KnapperJackCrafty ME? I couldn't use a phone for anything. I have to use a pen to hit the letters as my fingers are just too big to hit just one. Besides I'm just to old and blind now. I use a desktop and giant monitors.
Dang,that looks Purdy
Thanks
👏👏👏👏👍
What a beautiful piece! Do you sell them?
Yes. Sometimes, I have them available in my auctions on Modays on this channel.
What if you lightly score the Crystal before striking it? Would that help control the direction of the fractures when roughing out a piece?
Barely noticeable

Could you lean into its tendency to step fracture into themiddle and attempt to make a 4 sided arrowhead?
It's possible. But, in general, it's actually harder to make a 4-sided arrowhead rather than a flat one, believe it or not.
If I ever make it back to California, I’m gonna send you a truckload of red gypsum. I found a large deposit of it.
Did I say truckload I meant trunk load.
Interesting!
Are you going to recreate east coast point styles out of this quartz? Or are you doing Montelirio tholos arrow heads?
Actually, I'm saving the remaining pieces I have for projects I'm doing off camera. But the Montelirio Tholos arrowheads are fascinating. I'd like to make them someday.
@@KnapperJackCrafty I recently bought some quartz to make copies of the points for my collection.
