  • We get challenged to a race by our friend on a Nautitech 46, as well as an Outremer 51, Lagoon 380, Leopard 44, and a Halberg Rassey also comes along for the race against our hurricane damaged Lagoon 450! Well, it is actually a Jamie 465 now, as we extended the sugar scoops, so come along for the race to see how these production cats compare to each other!
    SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

    It’s amazing to see how Colin is the face and star of the channel but Jamie seems to have captured the hearts of everyone. I feel like parlay is as much about Colin and Jamie’s friendship as it is about Colin living his sailing dream.

    Colin I noticed that over the years we have been servicing the yanmar SD50 and SD50-4T, the cone cutches last for an average of around 750-850 running hours. There is only one Lagoon I know whos cone clutch lasted 1200 running hours.

    So good to see Jamie’s infectious laugh bring a happy vibe back to the boat ,hey hey and first fish 🐠 again caught on Parlay, shit yeah,Tom you are a definite asset bro keep smiling, this is a good team, cheers Colin.Oh just a thought, maybe because Parlay isn’t flopping around like a sloppy pig and the standing rigging is in correct adjustment possibly could be the reason she points better now up wind, dunno just my thoughts, safe sailing.Benji I owe you an apology brother you were there from the start safe sailing mate.

    When I saw Parlay pull out ahead, I was overwhelmed with emotion.
    All I could think about was how proud you must feel; not from leading the race but from enjoying the fruits of your labor.

    She'll be pointing into the wind alot better now because the rigs tuned properly and not bending to the leeward side. Tuner also may have added more rake helps upwind but slows ya down downwind🤙

      @@Antipodean33 True. Waterline length increase would have effectively “moved” the Mast’s Center of Effort the same distance forward increasing the ability to point better into the wind. Learned that lesson 45 years ago when Windsurfing was in its infancy.

    I’m a boat owner & noticed your sail drives are SD-50’s. Those are notorious for the cone failures. My boat has an SD-60 and has been rock solid for 8 years (knock on wood). Your description of slipping in forward gear sounds similar to many others with the SD-50.

I only say that because I have watched every episode from the start so it was easy to binge. While you were talking about the feeling you had, sailing better. , I would use the word 'Validate.' Your thought process and assessment of the broken bulkheads, and how that catastrophe effected parley, clearly, by stiffening up the hulls, allowing the rig to be properly tuned, validated your overview of how great these cats can be, with proper attention to construction and sail trim... Your engineering skills influencing the repair job, has paid off. Well done to you and the team... Validation...

    That's the difference a rig tune makes, also possible your extended water line length helped and the flow off the stern now has reduced drag. Clean hull helps, faster you go better you point.

  • @davidcook9486
    @davidcook9486 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice job Colin. Your approach to problem solving is inspiring. I’m sure you will solve the sail drive issue in time. I think you have your answer to your pointing ability. You will get better point with speed and speed comes from your aero and hydro. Both have improved with your refit. A lot of energy from the wind was lost before you stiffened the hull with the boat bending. Now every gust is a translated into power in the rig and as your boat can’t lean over to leak the energy, then it must go somewhere. Keep an eye on that apparent wind and be sure not to stress the boat beyond its (even new) design limits. Look forward to seeing your adventures down under.

    Having more speed allows you to point higher (I can’t explain or comprehend the physics here, but I’m sure someone on this channel can explain), that why ice yachts can sail directly into the wind or you can head up a few degrees in a puff.
    What is exciting is why you have more speed, stiffness of the hulls could be a factor, as is your clean and recently faired bottom / wetted surfaces, your stiffer rig was sure to help also as it keep the top of the sails from opening up and provides a better more efficient foil. Congrats on the win, it’s always gratifying to see your hard work turned into speed.

    Boat speed and height, well done. In my opinion its 100% a product of the boat being stiffer. Every bit of flex in a cat is lost power and drive. The best example I can give is, take two Hobie 16 cats that are 10 years old. Their platform and boat stiffness relies on aluminium beams connected into castings and after time they come loose, pull one apart and clue the beams into the castings with epoxy and then that boat will flog the other one as the power is being transferred to drive and forward momentum while the other is loosing some of its power and drive as the hulls wobble around in the swell.
    As for the transom extension, Im not qualified to comment, but it makes sense it would help as there would be less turbulence and waterline length = speed!
    Love the show and watch every week, thanks👍
