    Video dedicated to my dearest friend Carlotta.
    Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
    Violin, harpsichord and cello sonatas BWV 1014 - 1023.
    Arthur Grumiaux, violin.
    Christiane Jaccottet, harpsichord.
    Phillipe Mermoud, cello.
    Bach probably wrote this collection of violin sonatas in 1723, when he worked for Leopold Anthalt-Köthen. In these works, Bach provides not only the violin significancy but harpsichord and the structure might define the form that composers of violin would write their works e.g. Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn and Mendelssohn. Besides violin partitas, violin sonatas are fundamental in the long catalogue of Bach works.

    Es ist interessant festzustellen, dass Arthur Grumiaux einer der ganz wenigen Geiger ist, dessen Kunst durch seine Tonschönheit gepaart mit einem entspannten und natürlichem Musizieren absolut zeitlos ist, trotz aller neuen Erkenntnisse. Eine beglückende Aufnahme!

    The violin tone of Grumiaux is a wonder. It is so singing that is almost like an oboe. And one gets the feeling of total selflessness.

      @mightysmeagol (you seem to have taste and understanding not only in music but also in literature) - please don't forget Leonid Kogan. He was not only perfect in technique and also put so much feeling in his play. (Mostly, one has to make concessions in one or the other direction.) If you like Johannes Brahms, too, then please listen to Leonid Kogan giving his Violin concerto (best with the Philharmonia Orchestra London under Kyrill Kondraschin) on his Guarneri. Nobody ever played it like he did. It is a wonder from heaven.

      @piano2750 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You are absolutely right: Oistrakh was strong and vigorous, Heifetz excitingly vibrant, in our day Hahn is amazingly pure but Grumiaux had the most beautiful sound allied with musicianship of the utmost integrity and taste. We are so lucky to be able to enjoy this.

    Two great artists that fame has passed by... Elegant, clean interpretation by Arthur Grumiaux, who did not particularly cultivate schmaltz, effects or "Viennese-style" violin playing. No sugar here, straight coffee. The result is indeed divine, as Janus rightly wrote. Thank you, Sebastian, for posting this truthful interpretation of the sonatas. I needed this today! I hope many others will enjoy these pieces also. Please keep them here!

    It is most often difficult to hear the harpsichord since the sound of the violin is jumping at the forefront. But Bach wrote contrapunctal lines which are of equal importance. here, the recording offres a well balanced equilibrium between the two instruments.

    This is avery beautiful performance. My only regret is that hte captation puts forward the violin so the counterpoint between the line of the violin and the two lines of the harpsichord (left and right hand) is a bit hard to perceive. But this is common to almost all the recording of thes e six musical jewels.

      "Christ on the Mount of Olives" by Eugene Delacroix
      Interestingly, the music at this point is the Siciliana movement from the Sonata in C minor. If you've ever seen the Pasolini film "Il Vangelo secondo Matteo", a very similar piece ("Erbarme dich, mein Gott" from Bach's St. Matthew Passion) is played during the Garden of Gethsemane scene.

    Grumiaux is the best! But listening to one of the faster movements it sounds like the harpsichord is following him in accompaniment rather than pressing forward as the continuo role. But it could be because Grumiaux has too much of a soloist mentality, expecting her to follow in such a manner.
