While all Baroque music is flexible enough to be adapted to virtually any forces, it seems especially interesting how Bach never seems to be out of place when his music is adapted to just about any instruments. These arrangements for guitar of his violin sonatas and partitas is Exhibit A as testimony to this fact. They sound as if they were conceived for the guitar. Thanks in large part to the arranger, of course. But the naturalness of his melodic and contrapuntal contours never resists adaptation to any forces. Probably the main reason why "Switched-On Bach" was so popular. These wonderful performances of his sonatas and partitas for violin arranged for guitar are just gorgeous, utterly musical, and totally natural.

I agree, but I think perhaps a kind of confirmation bias comes into play also, because arrangers will of course only arrange pieces that actually work. Or rather, it is their successful attempts that we are most likely to hear. Still, Bach's compositions seem to work with any instrument that has the range for the piece, with a musical clarity and charm that remains surprising and insightful more than 450 years after his death.

Good point Tom and I too have wondered why Bach's music is so robust when transcribed not just across different instruments but also genres, Jazz for instance. In my view Bach is unique in this respect and I suspect that the basis for this quality is the harmonic robustness of his compositions. Even in single note solo instruments eg violin partitas, the harmonic element is very strong - we are always clear on the chord agreements. It's really damnably clever. Bach's vision and musical intent are clear and precise throughout; the music has a natural path through which it flows never sounding forced or arbitrary. Melodic inspiration is one thing but the "workmanship" that Bach deploys in his composition process especially around the harmonic dimension is to to be marvelled at and gives his music a rock solid basis for melodic creativity.

Bach is timeless. His music is as easy to listen to today as it was in the 1700's. I'm sad that we call this "classical music" it should still be "pop" music listened to by everyone, not just aficionados...

Many millions or tens of millions do in fact, listen to Bach, 'everybody.' At least my opinion is that enjoying his music by all strata of humans is not a rare thing. I don't think his music is reserved for fans of classical - like me.
Precisely because his music is adaptable via instruments like guitar and arrangements - like this.
      Just one man's opinion.

    • @Bencasso

Bach’s music has never been an easy listen. Those in the 1700’s didn’t listen or understand. The complexity of divinity Bach strives for, nor did they believe that god did either. Much like today Bach’s genius is lost in the motion of the fugues of confusion relayed through exasperation at the normal intelligence can not like nonetheless live that which is beyond their comprehension.

Not a lot one can add really, I used to play some of these on violin many years ago; they are as vibrant and metronomically cordant as ever and sound as good if not better on guitar. A wonderful crispness they have. I would guess in Bach’s day some folk played these on lute. Healing, relaxing, and inspiring loving music. I listen to these on my iPad Pro when in the bath 🕊💕

Something very good happens between Bach's music and the guitar instrument. As if both sides gains from this confluence: Bach's music feels more free and the guitar finds musical-treasures that were not meant initially for it. Given this encounter to the hands and soul of a professional guitar player like Francesco Teopini - and we get more than 100 % enjoyment. Bravo!!! Thanks Brilliant Classics for uploading.

Blind and blessed. Glen was considered the best in the world at the time, he was invited to Russia and the Ukraine to perform. He came back amazed at how good and strong the Ukrainian string players were, shortly after he quit knowing he'd never reach those heights ever again. And this from a sometimes classical guitarist!

Just as other reviewers have claimed, these works sound natural guitar repertoire. As guitar/violin works, they stand above everything else composed like stars compared to grains of sands: this music underneath is perfection from top to bottom, the very best that can be achieved on string instruments. Performer's excellent phrasing and crisp clarity of execution only makes it clearer than ever (and also what an extraordinary violinist Bach must have been).

    Bravo Francesco!

Maravilloso.

Bach rocks! Especially on guitar. Superb recording, too! I could listen to this all day, all night. I cannot get too much of this fantastic, intricate music and of the lovely tones of the classical guitar. Thanks for posting it!

not kidding. i play the WTC every day, about 20 favorite tunes. There is blues , jazz and even FUNK (especially towards the end of book two, those are FUNK syncopations, that last prelude in Bmi, esp), and how many possible permutations of chordal and melodic theory is it possible for one individual to assay? truly bach was a madman!

I myself would never play Bach like this... but lord this man is good. I seriously adore the way he plays. And the recording quality is outstanding. There is no excuse for albums of lesser quality in this day and age. One of my personal top 10 go to albums. Just bought my own copy.

its amazing what musicians produced, and how brilliant was the mind to preserve the way they wanted to play a piece. Musical notes are not only for the Superior musician, but to preserve it the idea of music. I really hope that mainstream music always leave an empty space only for people to have access to this wonderful and magnificent ouvre.
Me da la impresión de que esta pieza es introspectiva,
