About 5 years ago, I read a story about an elderly woman who died in Greenwich Viilage. She had moved to NYC in 1955 to be an actress. To save money, she lived in an apartment with 3 other young women. I think her share of the rent was $4 a month. Over the years, the other women moved out, but she stayed in the apartment. When she died, 63 years later, her rent was $28.43 a month.
@@cocoaorange1 The lady's name was Patricia O'Grady. There are some articles online, some with pictures. The place was kind of a mess, but it had a fireplace, and it was 2-bedroom. She had some part in the movie Taxi Driver. You might find the articles interesting. I stayed a couple of weeks at the YMCA on W. 34th in 1977. It was $4 a night.

This one brought back so many memories living in the nabe as a young man thirty years ago. I lived at 23 Lex former Martha Wash hotel which were like micro studios, which went for $500 a month. Ooh boy! I remember walking up Curry Hill but I didn't eat indian food at the time. Also used to go to a Baskin Robbins at the end of 23rd &1st. It's a great, quiet section but now it's too expensive!

Great video as always Tom. Would love to see you do a tour of Fordham University one day! Some of the richest history in all of NYC hidden on our campus. Keep up the great work
Thank you for another great video! It looks like a beautiful fall scene where you were. Sad, up here in Rochester, we had those colors a little over a month ago 😢. Now the trees are bare. I love learning the history with you! 😊

I’m in kips bay💃 glad you are in my neighborhood❤️ hey Kips Bay Towers is not city housing it’s private condos. We are a wonderful community of people. You should have seen our private garden! People come to see our beautiful garden. What about the ferry and the walk along the water. Dog park. Tell the Nyu hospital history too.
Great vid, Tom. I recently moved out of Kip’s Bay after living there for 25 years and even though I’m a history buff, I knew little of the history discussed. I can’t wait to enlighten my old neighbors next time we get together.
You did a great job with the tour! I enjoy watching your videos and was especially excited to see one covering my neighborhood. I liked how you included a stop showing the housing projects around Bellevue South Park and didn't just stop at Kips Bay Plaza. Urban renewal projects played a major role in the history of Kips Bay and practically affected all of the blocks between 1st and 2nd Aves. from 23rd to 33rd Sts, except for a row of townhouses that remain on the south side of 30th Street.
I love your videos. For some reason the algo decided I didn't want to see this and instead wanted the horrors of war piped to me. ???? Keep up the good work.
Even the pigeons looked cold but they're so cute! I've never seen a self-cleaning fire hydrant before. It must know that dogs roam the neighborhood:-) I enjoyed the show and tour as usual:-) 🧚♀ "It matters little when one goes." That gives me immense comfort for my eventual demise. lol 🧚♀
That's very funny to me because I went there last year and have to take most uncomfortable seat ever right in front of the screen 😂 and never went back there, even though I go to amc at least twice a month but I always go to the one on west 34th street or the one on Broadway near union Square
Always had this odd dream to go to NYC and live like a bum for a week. Not like a homeless person... That would be crazy, except you know beard long hair shopping cart i believe theyd let me just be, and id be able to hang out unbothered in some cool places. 15:53
Really like your videos. My dad grew up in NYC. He passed away, a month ago. I'm trying to learn about all of the places he was associated with there. He lived on W. 148th St, in the 1950's and early 1960's... in an Estonian neighborhood. Does anyone know anything about this location then or now? Maps label it as Sugar Hill. Tom, could you please please please do a tour of this area? Thank you!!
Hey, Tom -- nice video. That area was also once known as "Little Friuli" to the many immigrants who came from the Friuli region of Italy in the first half of the 20th century.
IM Pei designed the medical examiner building on 1st Ave opposite Bellevue Hospital. The scaffolding surrounding the building has been up for 14 years for mysterious reasons.
The reputation you are likely referring to is something that has not been the case for about three decades now. New York City has crime rates far lower than pretty much any other U.S. city you can name. On top of that, the whole world is here---people, theater, activities, restaurants, music and dance, history, gorgeous parks, museums, and a WALKING city where you actually see people who are not in their cars. Give it a try! I've been here my entire life, am 61, have traveled extensively, and will never leave. It's the best place on earth!
