@@LironYan I think it might depend what colors (pigments) you do it with a bit as well. I imagine Titanium white is probably pretty safe. I have heard of people using gouache having the mold in the tube happen though with some of the more organic pigments... like a carbon black. Also believe it effects gouache more then watercolor. Gouache mfgs often add a bit of dextrin to their binders to improve the matte finish. Dextrin is a starch and probably more prone to having mold issues. I know you were sponsored on this one. I think you would love a Schminkie or M. Graham artist style gouache... they aren't uniformly opaque or have any specific matte agents added, they also mix very nicely with normal watercolor. They are more what the old masters would just call Body Color. o7 thanks for the great content Liron. :)
youre so right about painters perspective vs viewers. every time i show a simple bright painting ive done to the average visitor they always talk about some realism artist theyve seen.
I really like the painting and the approach you took to not watch how other gouache artists use the medium. I think that's the key and now I understand why my gouache attempts have been somewhat disastrous. Thanks for the inspiration to experiment and learn by trial and error! But of course, Liron, your skill is also the key to this successful painting and the gift of creativity God has given you, along with hard work!

Thanks so much. I see a number of people using hot press and avoiding the more textured cold press for gouache. Nice to see how well you make it work on cold press (my favorite regular WC surface). I really appreciate your taking the time to respond!
This video was very encouraging for me. I just can’t get gouache to do what it’s “supposed” to do (Philip Boelter’s channel is an excellent example of using gouache the traditional way) but this video is proof that you can just… use it, whichever way feels instinctively right to you, and if you know what you’re doing with values, composition, etc, it’ll turn out beautifully.

Your subject matter is unique in comparison to what I see elsewhere on TH-cam. I'm more familiar with flowers, rural landscapes, and the like. This actually helps me (a complete beginner) in learning to focus on the shapes, rather than the content, both when I'm trying to paint something and when I'm watching your videos. I'm not ready to venture into gouache, but I found this fascinating regardless. Thanks!

That’s a great question. I think the main thing is how it mixes on the palette and on paper (with it being transparent), and the texture it doesn’t create, compared to how gouache felt. I am very inexperienced with gouache though, so it won’t be close to a complete answer (:
@@LironYan I feel like watercolor communicates a sense of texture - like “dry brush” - whereas gouache appears more flat and rather dull even, though of course gouache is thicker.

Because of the price, I was tempted to buy a set of watercolors from Meeden. The colors could not be squeezed out of the tube because they had dried up. I now stick to Schmincke paints because I know what quality to expect. Your picture looks fantastic, of course. However, this is not something that can be attributed to the colors.

Sometimes when you try to wet brush blend gouache, it goes all the way down to the white of the paper. Not that it can't be done, just go gently.

@@LironYan me neither. I used cotton papers from arches, clairefontaine and baohong, so wet on wet was an obvious option.
