    7:02 - Correction: Punish means you hit an opponent when they were recovering from an attack. Counter, on the other hand, means that your attack was faster, and it got to your opponent when he was winding up his attack. Punish in fighting games usually puts you in a more advantageous position than counter, and counter in fighting games is usually more advantageous than landing a hit in neutral (more plus frames).

  • @jawnsunn
    @jawnsunn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Few corrections:
    - j.H generally means jump heavy. If you want to notate any jumping attack, just label as j.X(insert button there).
    - Versus contains a very weird but fundamental mechanic of "Proximity" normal attacks where your standing(not crouching!) L/M/H buttons will have different versions and properties based on how far or close you are. Most close range buttons are advantageous on block(hence the phrase "plus on block" noted by the FGC) and are used offensively on block/hit since the opponent will not be able to counterattack afterwards in most cases -> very easy to confirm/react to the counterhit if they do press. I don't think there's a widely agreed upon notation for close buttons, but I believe it should be a variation of *cl.5X* or *cl.X*.
    I definitely feel like the best I can give to a new fighting game player is to find your communities so that you're able to meet other players of similar interest, skill level, and most importantly region! I say region because I could not help but wince at Koon playing this game on anything above a 6f delay on netplay LOL, if this game had better netcode maybe SEA to NY would be feasible but maybe next time. Granblue_en made a pretty good discord server that's welcoming to both GBF/FG players that people should check out and ask for games there(discord.gg/guumWMN), but I should also recommend to find a discord server specifically for your region so that you are able to find games and also find local events that you can participate in. (Though at the time of this writing, CORVID-19 kind of postponed a lot of them, maybe some private/house sessions.)
    Check out the FGC Discord Compendium here at: discord.gg/guumWMN. You can sort regionally(3rd tab), or through games if you're interested in anything beyond GBVS.

      Playing online was tough in this video, cause it is NA version, while I was playing from Asean, that's why the delay was high.

      Guilty Gear is the main game that both uses numpad notation and has proximity normals, and that usually uses c.X and f.X to distinguish close and far attacks respectively.

    As a fighting game player that got into GBF due to VS, it's a pleasant surprise to see that you also play GBVS since I watch a lot of your videos :^). This video itself is really good advice for beginners, I've played FGs for years and still make sure to watch tutorials because each fighting game has its own nuances that sets it apart from others.
    There's little things that I never would've knew unless I looked such as being able to do M/EX moves with one-button special, the way chip kills function in this game, the fact it has a guts scaling, etc.

    • @CrusaderKoon
      @CrusaderKoon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly, I was so wrong to skip tutorial. Didn't realise fighting games have such depth until I dived into it. I'm still learning, get bullied all the time, but it is pretty fun to play GBVS, since all my favourite characters are there :P

    • @teddy6012
      @teddy6012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad that GBF was able to get more people into fighting games! Truly one of the deepest genres out there and with so much variety! I'd highly encourage to give some other fighting games a shot if you haven't yet if GBVS has given you a love for the genre! :^) (My personal favorites 3rd Strike, Guilty Gear Accent Core Plus R, Vampire Savior, Melty Blood, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax)
      Here's to hoping our favorite characters getting in. I'm praying for Yodarha, Siete, and Caim.
      Also for any beginner out there, it's important to learn to take things at your pace. It could take years to get to an even "competent" level. Many people you'll play will most likely have tons of fighting game experiences with various fundamentals that have transferred over from other fighting games. Just learn to have fun, ask for matches, and don't be afraid to ask for advice, majority of the FGC are very friendly and welcoming!

    One of the things that worked for me in fighting games was buying a fightstick - I already tried playing on a keyboard and a joy-pad. I broke the D-pad on the joy-pad by playing fighting games. My inputs on a fightstick are waaaay more accurate than on the other two input methods.

  • @deice3
    @deice3 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice beginner guide!
    Just to clarify notation, in GBVS the "S" button usually refers to the Skill/Special/Ability button (used for easy input specials - sometimes also referred to as "Ab"). The character unique button is mostly referred to as U (or sometimes D because of blazblue and relatives).
    But I have sometimes (rarely) seen people use S for the U button, which can be confusing. For clarity, I usually use L M H U Ab G for the button, because this is clear.

    About mistake, you should have something about player asking "Which character should I play ? Which one is the strongest ?"
    First, in most fighting games, every character strong if you know how to play them and against every other character.
    Second, new players starting with the character they love the most is a "mistake". I suffered from this playing other fighting games. (such as BlazBlue and MELTY BLOOD)
    As new player, you'll want to play the character you love, for me it was Metera. And I won't blame for you wanting to play the character you love on the game you just bought. But you shouldn't do this "YET".
    Because every one of you will developp a feeling with fighting games, some people like dashy character, some like very punitive character, very slow hard hitting character, long range character (I hope you're not...), etc.
    And you know what I will say, the character you love may not work the way you wanted him to be and this will be very frustrating for you, because it's either hard to use it for a new player, require a higher execution level, setup etc.
    You won't progress and that's a very unrewarding way of playing. Unless you're very stubborn as I was with Melty Blood and you won't get good result for a long time. (I started with White Len CM, which is not very noob friendly.)
    1/ TRY EVERY CHARACTER before going all-out in the training mode trying to learn and improve.
    They made a very good tutorials to try each character and explain how to play they work. If you have a bad feeling with a character and his moves, it's fine, skip to an another. Until you have a feeling of doing something good like "Oh wow it's easy to do this, it feels good to play ! " or " Wow it feels natural to use these moves together".
    With a good feeling with character you're actually playing, you'll learn and progress even faster. In the end, I wanted to play with very sexy bow erune, but I got a really bad feeling with Metera, her playstyle is more of long rang and setup combo and I'm not good enough to play and enjoy her. But while doing tutorials, I found out that Zeta and Lancelot feels very good and rewarding to play for me.
    And now I'm learning Zeta in training mode until I got good execution and good knowledge of her moves.
    To sum up all of my bullshit :
    Play character which feels natural for you to play, not the one you love the most. Your progression will be much more rewarding until you become an advanced player who can play every characters he love because he understand how game works and want to extend it's enjoyment toward his favorite fighting games.
    (Of course, this comment is for very new player who never play any fighting games seriously.)
    Great video overall Koon, hope you enjoy GBFVersus a lot !

      @CrusaderKoon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly Arc! Thanks for pointing this out.
      I wanted to talk about this one, and suggested new players to start from some 'relatively easy' characters like Gran and Katalina, but I didn't think I'm convincing enough, so I simply scratched this part.
      This is a very important sharing. As a new player I can fully relate cause playing Narmaya doesn't help me to get a better grasp of GBVS, I think I would just stick to Gran for now.

      @@CrusaderKoon honestly i heavily disagree. Playing the char you like most is more important than playing somebody easy. If you play some one who's totalllt unoob friendly its harder but at the same time you end up with a better understanding of fighting games and strenghs and weakness of charecters.

    One thing I'd like to correct, when the "punish" notification comes out, that doesn't mean you caught your opponent mashing and got him in a counterhit. The "punish" notification in this game specifically refers to wiff punishing an attack. I.e. the example you showed is gran wiffing f5H with Percy wiff punishing with f5M, 214M>H.
    if you catch your opponent mashing, the notification will show "counter" instead.
    Also here's some additional tips:
    1) Never run on a knocked-down opponent if they have full meter. There's a massive delay from going for Run to block, so if your opponent catches you running on him while he has full meter, you're gonna eat a wakeup super. You CAN spot dodge/roll out of a run, but the timing of dodging a super with spot dodge or run is very strict and differs from character to character, so it's better to just not run on an opponent with full meter.
    2) The shorter the combo the more damage you do. It SEEMS counter intuitive, but the way that damage scaling works in this game, the more normals (this is what we call regular attacks) you have in a combo, the more the combo will scale your damage. Quick for instance, with Narm's SSA: if you do just 5H into SSA, you net roughly 5.5k damage. If you do the whole auto combo: I.e. HHH into SSA the damage scales to about 4.9k. As you can see, you lose A LOT of damage for tacking on extra buttons, so try to keep your combos are short as possible. Of course starting a combo with an auto combo is fine cause it's a really good confirm, but in the middle of a combo, try to keep the amount of normals to a minimum.

    • @DeathWing03
      @DeathWing03 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Okay another thing I'd like to correct: there IS a penalty for using the shortcut for SAs and SSAs, ESPECIALLY for Ladiva. Doing em raw you get no penalty (except Ladvia, if you do her shortcut SSA you lose 1k damage), do them in a short combo, you also don't get a penalty. However if you use the shortcut SA/SSA during an extended optimal combo, you lose a TON of damage.

    • @CrusaderKoon
      @CrusaderKoon  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice additional tips Deathwing! These are actually enlightening! Running on a knocked-down opponent seems to be one of my bad habits, I'm still trying to correct this. I'm very surprised to find that the shorter combo dishes out more damage, this is an eye-opening insight. Thanks for sharing :)

  • @ige-igeogo-jeoge-geugeoda

    Something I would like to share is please please please learn the max range of all your buttons. You want to press all of your buttons just at the tip of their hit boxes. It'll make you allot harder to punish. Also you have to make sure you dont mash. I know when you get the hit you are eager to make sure you dont drop the combo but it would do you better to lab hitting your combos without mashing which will help you be allot more consistent.

    First thing I did was do the tutorial... and Immediately get traumatized by the Gran fight at the end of it. Like the first three rounds I blinked and died then I managed to start getting a hit or two in before dying. Now I can win maybe one or two out of the five?
    Ah also on the topic of RPG mode, I unlocked the Gran Coin fight and he drops Luminiera Bolts, Luminiera Bhuj and Bow of Iliad so far... Forgot the skills at the moment sorry for the incomplete information... Haven't had time to do more yet but I'll be grinding him a lot pretty soon.
    More irrelevant rambling on RPG mode (Feel free to skip I'm mostly talking about Septian Burners):
    My "5 septian burners" grid was not as equal to other grids as I originally thought since I accidentally entered a Vs Percival battle with my actual water grid and just deleted him. I had to double check I wasn't on Normal after that. And I ended up buying more septian burners so I could have a full grid of Fully uncapped Level 100 Septian Burners just because I ended up having a ton of money after grinding for gear, That grid is totally useless but I find it very amusing nonetheless. I managed to beat Metera once with it but it took a lot longer than regular grids and I wasn't drowned in loot immediately so it's presumably pretty pointless.
