    Great advise about seed sowing. Dont get me wrong Toby is very good presenter and a gent, but for some reason TH-cam videos are proving to be more useful for me than BBC's Gardener' s world. I have skipped 75%of Gardner's world recordings last year and planning not even to bother with them in the future.

    Excellent video Steve and great advice regarding seed sowing for the best results 👍 Because most of the seeds are from suppliers in England, I think in Scotland it's best to wait at least 2 weeks to a month before you start seed sowing because we're at least up to a month behind yourself Steve. I do subscribe to Mark's allotment which is an allotment TH-camr based in Scotland I would recommend 👌 to anyone based in Scotland. Keep safe, warm and well.

    Yes, we've all down too early and ended up with seeds rotting or seedlings rotted off or spindly beggars that never do well. The seed packets assume you are planting stuff direct outside. You can cheat by starting indoors, but only if you have the equipment. If you want to extend your season I'd recommend Charles Dowding's channel and Steve at Seaside Allotment channel, but you need time and determination to follow them!

    I always love your videos, Steve. I've started onion seeds, my beans, and I'll start off my cape gooseberries and peanuts later this month to get a jump start - but ..I am doing this indoors under a grow light. I still have plenty of seed, so if there are problems, I have backups. 🙂

    • @GreenSideUp

    • @robinscontainergarden
      @robinscontainergarden 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GreenSideUp Yes, all the beans started now are broad beans. I didn't grow them last year, so I'm looking forward to them. I didn't think peanuts grew in the UK, but apparently, they do. The really cool thing about them is their flowers have spikes and grow downward into the soil, becoming the peanut. I always thought the peanuts grew on the roots, but it's the flowers! How cool is that??

    Great video with some invaluable information and tips as ever Steve.
    I had mixed results with my Peppers and Chilies last year - loosing an early sowing and when trying again, they really struggled in the little polyframe in the back yard and then got attacked by slugs!
    The tomatoes were much better and we got a decent crop under cover - although, as with anything with growing, watering was inconsistent and we had a holiday with affected the crop.
    Thanks for the inspirational content - hopefully this years attempts will be better.

    Well done, hope you have helped stop a lot of people getting discouraged. I had to learn the hard way and figure out light and temperature needed to balance to grow things early. Experimented with courgettes last year, sowed in February to see how soon it died, as an experiment. A combination of heat to sow, cool to grow, artificial heat to keep the night time temperature up to a minimum level, a south facing conservatory and grow lights meant I had courgettes early May. It has taken several years of things going wrong, or right to work out how to grow out of season. Love to experiment or try a new type of plant

    Well said Steve, down at the allotment people sow far to early and when they take or if they take they will find their season is over far to soon as they don't know how to prolong a season by sowing at the right time then repeating the process for the right crop.

    Great video, Steve!
    I live in the warmest region in my country (Germany), so I know I can sow most seeds earlier than what German seed packets say - and have to wait longer in the late summer, because temperatures stay higher for much longer. When I get Austrian seed packets (many of the organic seeds I get in Germany are from Austria), I can even go 4-6 weeks early.
    For my colleagues, who have been asking for my advice, I tell them to stick to best practice (and I will be sowing some extra seeds to help them out with seedlings in case things go wrong)

    I have noticed down here though, that the end of winter and start of spring appears to be moving further into the year down here, and winter proper is starting later.

    You may have answered before so apologies if this is a repeat question. Do you rate Premier Seeds Direct? About to do my seed purchasing for the coming months and their prices seem lower than the rest and there might be a reason as to why! Thank you

    • @magpie1492
      @magpie1492 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Premier Seeds are very good. Lots of seeds for your money. Downside is that they come in a foil packet with only the name of the seeds on it. So you have to find the growing info elsewhere.

    • @GreenSideUp
      @GreenSideUp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rate premier seeds very highly indeed and have used them for well over a decade now, their seeds are cheap because they buy well. Yes their seed packets are just little foil packs, without the extra paper packet around them with the instructions on, but all the instructions are on their website, saving you the cost of paying for that and therefore keeping the overall cost down. Highly recommended !
