- During the reign of King Henry VIII, the brutal Tudor monarch executed two of his own wives. One of his most tragic victims was Catherine Howard, his fifth wife who was just a teenage girl when she was executed inside the walls of the Tower of London. She was accused of sleeping with Thomas Culpepper, the King's closest friend but also a man named Francis Dereham who she had allegedly agreed to marry. Dereham was a violent man who took advantage of Catherine, and the pair had a long history.
Whilst Dereham worked in the household of Agnes Tilney, he struck up a relationship with Catherine. But it was claimed the pair had agreed to marry, and this claim would have then invalidated Henry VIII's marriage to Catherine. This was a bold claim and when it came out, Dereham was immediately arrested and was sent to the Tower of London. He may have been tortured, and he was then sentenced to death for treason and sleeping with the King's Queen. He was executed by being brutally hanged, drawn and quartered at Tyburn.

Catherine was doomed from the start. She pretty much sealed her own fate by not telling the king she wasn't a virgin. And having an affair with ANYONE knowing about it - was extremely bad judgment considering what he did to A.Bolyn. Poor girl was young and whimsical ....very sad case. Henry was a real life monster!

Given the horrific punishments handed out during these times I'm amazed any other man was able to perform with Henry VIII's wives, a little difficult to stay focused on the job in hand while unable to block the potential fates from your mind. I feel in reality many of the accusations were just that and many confessions and statements were forced by the unpleasant tortures also available during these times.

It was practically suicidal to have intimate affairs with the Kings wife & as far as his "legal" team were concerned you were guilty regardless as to whether you actually did get intimate with the Queen or not because as happened with Anne Bolyn she was accused of sleeping with her own brother & was only found guilty when he succumbed to being tortured & by admitting to something that he probably wasn't guilty of he condemned them both to death because sleeping with the Queen was high treason & the only punishment available was death by axe 🪓 if you were a serf (commoner) & death by sword if you were royalty like I said you were effectively guilty regardless as to whether or not you actually were or not
@@martinthrone7012 actually, Mark Smeaton was the only one who confessed under torture. The accused gentlemen were not allowed to be tortured under the law, so Cromwell tortured the commoner Smeaton to build a case. The gentlemen accused of adultery with Anne Boleyn maintained their innocence.

The narration is just fine. A producer of TH-cam content can't tailor make content to suit each different individual subscribers wishes. That would be silly, especially on free to view content.

It makes his speech very monotone.
I don't hate it, and I can follow it with no great issue, but a more natural cadence to his delivery would make our host seem more likeable and make the stories more enjoyable.
He's discussing the craziest subjects but there's little to no emotion in the narration! It's crazy.
I agree - if he were to change this facet of the videos, and maybe get a little excited during the exciting parts, and sad during the sad parts, he'd garner more subs.

She was fit and up for sneaking around. I mean, it probably would've been fine had the idiot not left her letter to him lying around.
It happened before Catherine even met the King, when she was living somewhere managed by her step grandmother.
There were a few parts to the series the tudors that I've had some issues with but imo they covered Catherine Howard's execution and those with her quite well. Ill always remember how they used her dancing scene just prior to death to show she had so much life left to live.

@@DJJinxC2006 I see what you mean. Maybe they should have read the local newspaper or gossip magazine to get a better feel for life at court during Henry’s reign. Or they could have gone down to the Tower of London to see others being executed for dilly-dallying with Henry’s wives and rate their own chances of getting away with it.

Catherine Howard was such a sad lot she was. Being used and abused by men prior to being married to the aged and obese King. Then to be executed for a fling with a man who was younger and more to her liking. When I read and listen to documentaries about Catherine Howard, I really feel sorry for her.

They had more dangerous exercises at which he had once excelled. At some point he got a leg wound that never healed, resulting in pain, reeking smells, and pustules for the rest of his life, if perhaps at intervals. One of the grosser but more sympathetic aspects of the man's life.

The full sentence passed upon those convicted of High Treason up to 1870 was as follows:
„That you be drawn on a hurdle to the place of execution where you shall hanged by the neck and being alive cut down, your privy members shall be cut off and your bowels taken out and burned before you, your head severed from your body and your body divided into four quarters to be disposed of at the King‘ s pleasure.“
From the late 18th century on, men sentenced for high treason would be spared the whole procedure; usually you were hanged by the neck till death, then followed the butchering process: you’re privy parts were cut off, the intestines taken out and burnt (or just replaced within the corpse afterward), your head severed off your neck and, in the case of an public execution shown around. Often the real quartering wasn’t carried out anymore, the same goes for the „drawing“ part, pulling out the bowels.

King Henry VIII was a sadistic mass murderer who enjoyed using the "toys" in the "Tower of London" -- more accurately, a dungeon and torture chamber -- to cause devilish pain and suffering and torment of people's frail bodies. You can find this monster walking around the Lake of burning brimstone in Hell every day at 08-00 h, ready for his morning swim. After "dying" from being burnt to death, he is revived and the process begun every 30 min on the dot, each day and every day for all eternity. At Christmas, he is given a reprieve, and he is hung until almost dead, drawn and quartered and his entrails eaten by monsters as he is still squirming in pain. His torn body is picked over by evil crows with red eyes which fight for morsels of meat.

My understanding was that she was stitched up, framed, by the King's co-horts because he wanted rid of her - so they just made up a story that she was seeing other men.

Messing with the wife of the king potentially corrupts the line of succession by introducing the possibility of her pregnancy and the birth of a child who might be presumed by some to be the king's, might later claim to be the king's, or might indeed be the king's, but they would never be able to tell for sure. An intolerable risk of future civil war and rebellion is thus introduced. Alternatively, everybody just blithely assumes it's the king's but the possibility remains some other man's bastard thus inherits the throne under false pretenses. What king would tolerate that? It's like tolerating passing all your money to some other man's son, except to the nth degree.

Katherine was a young girl, who was let down by her Aunt who whilst Katherine was in her care, did not take proper control of Katherine. There is no allegedly necessary here, she was caught red handed....she paid the price, rightly or wrongly, for having loose morals, and the price, especially as Queen, was death. This was the law of the time, she knew the risks, and paid with her life, sad, but not unfair, you live and die by the laws in place at the time you lived. C’est la vie...ou la mort.

And to give Henry a little credit, the purpose of much of his wife shopping and chopping was to get enough sons to guarantee the succession and avoid a repeat of the nasty Wars of the Roses of the 1400's.

After i watch this episode, i have 1 thing to say. Back in the old days, execution was cruel and unusual punishment (by today standard). Today execution is a gentle passage into after life.

Today the death penalty is abolished in the UK. But back then they had some absolutely brutal medieval execution methods.

There were no cameras or camcorders bck then, if you were expecting a reenactment maybe try typing that in search bar - these videos are more informative than they are visual. Back in those days they painted people/portraits/battle reenactments/churches/etc. The artist's & the historians are the reason we know ANYthing about these time periods, really....

As a Culpepper (and, therefore, as a direct descendant of Pepin), I resent this slur on Thomas' name. I wonder, though, if he was such a friend of Henry, how could Henry have let him be executed. Probably envy of his name, since Culpepper is a much more ancient name than Tudor.
