  • Shellac, Live... Watch it!
    Shellac has a distinctive, minimalist sound based on unusual and urgent time signatures, repetitive heavy rhythms, an angular guitar sound, and Albini's surreal, bitingly sarcastic lyrics. Songs typically do not have traditional verse/chorus/verse structure and the arrangements are sparse, to the point where some describe them as "amelodic". Shellac's signature sound is often associated with their enthusiasm for vintage Travis Bean guitars, a rare brand of aluminium-based instruments, and the Interfax "Harmonic Percolator" distortion pedal. Albini is also known to use copper plectrums and unique guitar straps that fit around the waist rather than over the shoulder. The band prefers the intimacy of smaller clubs and live appearances are sporadic.

    Going by the comments I can see Shellac have obviously managed to remain obscure. They're probably my favourite band of all time. This era in particular I love - the first few 7" songs and At Action Park blew my mind back in '94 when I was introduced to them and I love them just as much today. Fantastic to have a whole live set uploaded from that time. You've done me a great service - even if I did take my sweet time realising this was up here. Thanks!

    Being a generation X'er I unfortunately did Not discover Steve Albini until a friend played Rapeman!! That was IT for me I was hooked. I love the obscurity of his 3 different bands and variations all comprised of the same foundation. All 3 Shellac,Big Black, and Rapeman are Waaay ahead of their time and Genius!! When I first heard his music I thought it was current like two thousandsish! NOT 1988-1994 or so!! Timeless! Thanks Brainphreak for posting this show...

    • @gerrypeacemaker9407
      @gerrypeacemaker9407 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I discovered Rapeman on here listening to Big black songs, clicked on Trouser Minnow and that was it, ordered the album of Amazon that evening and never looked back. Still blows my mind considering when it was released, you can hear so many later bands in that one album. Changed my whole musical taste discovering Big black, I clicked on bad penny from their pig pile show and I was hooked. Spent eighty quid on the video of that show and god knows how much on albums, Rudimentary Peni being the most expensive at £80. I would get them through the post, chuck them on my I-tunes and them put them in a box for safe keeping. Swans, Scratch acid, Shellac, Slint, to name but a few. All I can say is thank god for TH-cam.
