  • Tom Waits: Tales from a Cracked Jukebox (BBC Documentary)
    Directed by James Maycock
Tom Waits is one of the most original musicians of the last five decades. Renowned for his gravelly voice and dazzling mix of musical styles, he's also one of modern music's most enigmatic and influential artists. Using rare archive, audio recordings and interviews, this film is a bewitching after-hours trip through the surreal, moonlit world of Waits' music - a portrait of a pioneering musician and his unique, alternative American songbook.

No one ever mentions his role in the film "Ironweed." It's small, but he absolutely steals the show in it and makes the hobo life seem so surreal, demented, and free of pretense.

Closing Time and Rain Dogs do it for me.
My most interesting Tom Waits story goes like this...
I was 28, living in Minneapolis- because of my love of The Replacements, and of course, the girl. By 28, the girl was gone, but 2001 was a great time to see your favorite bands play all around Minneapolis. Anyway, my friend (who incidentally introduced me to Tom Waits' music in high school) invited me out to his new place in Manhattan- Spanish Harlem. I had recently bought an iron-on off eBay with a beautiful psychedelic image of Tom Waits that said: Tom Waits is My President. As I attempted to go through security (shortly after 9/11), I was pulled aside, and asked, " Who is this Tom Waits that is YOUR President?
    I replied, " A musical genius".
He said, " Never heard of him."
    I said, " I wouldn't think You would have".
And I was sent on my way to see my first Brooklyn girls on downtown trains. After the jolt of NYC during that visit, I moved here the following year. Every time I'm on a downtown train I think of Tom.

I was exactly like that…loved his early, romantic ballads. Then he scared the crap outta me. Had to stand back and catch my nerve and go back in. Now I’m just as big a fan of the shocking stuff. He woke me up a little.
I’ve seen him live at least eight times in every iteration and just was awed by his absolute artistry. In the beginning I would try and get my friends to listen and most didn’t get it. They eventually came around, of course. In my opinion Tom is the most fantastic sound artist and wordsmiths ever. This documentary is excellent!!
    I don’t wanna grow up.

There's a Tom Waits song for every feeling I've ever experienced in my life. It has helped me through life and death. The range of his repertoire is simply all there is.

Read the writings of Charles Bukowski. The Hard bitten, dead ender, chronic drunk, Beat poet, who embodied the Wait's life style & persona. See the movie Barfly. Bukowski writes: "Find what you love, and let it kill you",.....I paraphrase.
