      R.G.M As the video explained, it’s all about “lines”. In ballet they are important, it makes the legs look nice and elongated. A pink shoe on a pale complexion creates a beautiful line. Of Course they don’t match the wearers skin tone...a pink shoe on a darker complexion breaks the line. It’s not as flattering on us, which is why we pancake our shoes and wear darker tights.

      They are. Contrary to what others are saying. A contrasting shoe cuts off the bellerina’s leg and it looks horrible in ballets. When watching a ballet, people aren’t supposed to focus on the feet but what the story tells.
      Seeing a stark pink against a darker skin tone takes away from the beauty and fluidity of the dance. The same for the tights. Anything outside of the intentional costume, make up, and background elements will pull from the performance.
      This isn’t just ballet. This is all avenues of entertainment.

    • @0urlady0fsorr0wss
      @0urlady0fsorr0wss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +128

      Cee’baby no it’s mostly because ballet was such a white dominated field for so long they didn’t think that it was “necessary” to make them. But as more and more darker skinned women started to become a part of the ballet world, we needed more inclusion and representation for darker skinned ballerinas. It is technically a white privilege since it’s probably easier to find lighter colored shoes which sucks, but that’s not why they didn’t start making them sooner...

      @0urlady0fsorr0wss 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Amita Nathan you literally just disproved your point, the shoes were not made until recently because black people weren’t encouraged to dance and were not widely accepted in the ballet community until recently, but now that they are, there are more shoes readily available to match their skin tones. Is it prejudice and racist to try and exclude people of color in ballet? Of course, but this isn’t a “white privilege issue”, it’s a racist issue. White privilege isn’t the reason these shoes weren’t made sooner, it’s the racists who discouraged them from participating.

    • @cbudzyn
      @cbudzyn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      meow meow Sorry but you’re uninformed about this subject, I’m a dancer & all pointe shoes are hand made. Bloch, Capezio, Russian Pointes & Freed’s to name a few major brands. Freed of London does custom fittings & all manufactures of pointe shoes make a variety of off-the-rack shapes for the studio level dancers, even some professionals can get away with these fittings of P.S. with their own modifications. However, you have the option to have a pointe shoe made by a specific maker at Freed & they will tailor fit a Freed P.S. to the changes you order. The reason a dancer would want this is ill fitting point shoes causes problems & it makes dancing much easier. The list of problems can range from having extra satin cut and sewn to the lower the profile, have a 3/4 shank instead of full, reinforce the toe box, tailoring the heels if the dancer constantly has issues with a “disappearing heel” when on pointe, these & many other changes can be made so the P.S. is specific to the dancer’s needs. It’s expensive however if it’s your livelihood would you rather spend your down time sewing & modifying shoes everyday or have them ready to go?

      Well...it depend on what kind of ballet company it is, nowadays the companies are more diverse and do all the thing from contemporary to neoclassical and straight up classical. Classical isn’t about matching your skin shade, it’s about matching the tights, the costume and the character you’re trying to represent, that’s why pink are sometimes more inclined to princess looks like Aurora(tho most ballet dancers stick to a more salmon toned pointe lol), neoclassical and contemporary on the other hand are more free and according to the choreographer’s choice the dancers will not have tights on their figurine, which makes more sense for them to pancake the shoes.

    For you guys who don't understand: Black ballerinas sometimes paint their shoes to be darker so they don't stand out so badly. Having a shoe that blends in better with your skin tone probably does a LOT for confidence. It's just like having a band aid that blends in or having a nude bra that matches. That stuff is small, unnoticeable, under the clothes. It might seem small to someone who has never once had to think about how the world isn't catered to their skin color. Instead of criticizing this for being gimmicky or unnecessary, understand where these people are coming from. YOU have the privilege to write it off as stupid but do the world a favor and consider something other than yourself for a moment.

      It said in the video that in the past most dance companies wore tights, which meant that the color of the shoe only needed to match the tights, not the dancer's skin. Now that they're going bare-legged rather than wearing tights it's necessary to have a wider variety of colors for their shoes so they match the skin tone of the dancer.

If you look around TH-cam, you can see it's everywhere not just in dance but it's present in other art forms as well. Isn't that what art is about though? Change, expression, mixing two seemingly different things and making something new out of it? You know, being creative? Have you ever been?

      @@chanelf1758 I guess if you're looking for 'racism' you'll find it. The modernising I was referring to was the ditching of tights that Mochi first referred to. Dancers always wore tights for various reasons. It was an integral part of the 'uniform'. But somehow it's always acceptable to change TRADITIONALLY 'white' art forms (like it or not, it was TRADITIONALLY white) but conversely non-white art forms are seen as somehow untouchable and not in need of change. Oh and by the way, I think you meant 'you're'; you + are = you're.
