@@HydraulicPressChannel Yeah. Since ballistic helmet and crash helmet have completely different uses. As you said being collapsed by press isn't exactly what either of the helmet types are designed for. Though interesting still. Ballistic helmet absolutely must be as strong as possible. However usually the projectiles aren't massive enough to cause crash type problems (massive accelerations, momentum shifts), since the projectiles those are designed for are small mass. So hold firm and deflect or stop the projectile, make it expend it's kinetic energy trying to reform the ballistic protection. If the projectile is massive enough to cause momentum shift problems (bang the head around inside the helmet/ fling the whole head and helmet around on the neck).... Well bye bye, lower the curtains, just got hit by a tank cannon directly or something. Helmet won't help. Where as crash helmet is for momentum threats mostly. Larger mass (the head itself) experiencing accelerations. Accelerations is the killer here. Hence for example the HANS device on racing drivers, prevent the heads from having massive acceleration that snap the neck. I think you have to try the helmets under the Smashinator as well, since the motorcycle helmet is probably designed to withstand sudden force, not that continuous force of a hydraulic press :D
So you're right but also not right. So The bicycle helmet withstood a force of I'd say about 800 kg (7.8 kN) before it started to fail. Which translates to the average European adult (70.8 kg) experiencing an acceleration of 110 m/s^2 which if riding at an average speed of 15.5 km/h (4.3 m/s) would be a crash that takes 0.04 seconds to come to a complete stop all directed at the head. As to the motorcycle helmet, while it began to deform early, the force was displaced around the entire shape and left the head intact until around (I'd estimate) 1500 kg (14 kN) which for an average adult at Finnish highway speeds of 50 km/h (13.89 m/s) would be an accident that would bring them to a complete stop at around 0.06 seconds. So the Smashinator would be like testing the penetrating power of a bullet by shooting it at wet cardboard.

Motorcycle helmets are definitely affected by age. The plastics break down which is why it’s recommended you replace them every five years. More often if left in direct sunlight. I replace mine every other year (I’m a commuter, so my helmets see a lot more abuse than your regular fair-weather rider). Also, some helmets are built different than others, so get a ‘true’ read on what motorcycle helmets take could be tricky.
Helmet are not made for hydraulic test... It would not be wise to buy a helmet based upon the hydraulic pressure that it can handle. Motorcycle helmet are made in such a way that they are soft and provide safety at the same time. If a person riding a bike at 60kmph met with accident then the flexibility (softness) of the helmet becomes crucial as it absorbs the majority of the shock. If someone wore a hard metal helmet then it won't serve the purpose as all the shock will be transferred to Neck, shoulders, head...
Okay why are there so many people who thinks that they are so smart in the comment section like the one that I'm replying to okay your right but try to not be a boastfull brat.
@@pete_lind Bicycle helmets of recent are designed for low-speed impacts too, something motorcycle helmets don't really do so well at. Mountain bike helmets can be more expensive than motorcycle helmets, and that's because of the technology everyone is trying to develop to reduce rotational injuries to the brain, which are fatal. Having a lot of pressure of a hard hit on a helmet is not a true test of its abilities, just like seeing a smashed up car can look less safe than a car in the same crash with much less visible damage.
i think the motorcycle helmets are made to resist being broken down as the slide on the road. so if you crash going 100 on tarmac you won't get your head scraped up
I think the expensive bike helmet actually started to flatten out around 80-100Kg before the cabbage started to break where as the c heap bike helmet had the cabbage start to break around 120Kg and then the helmet only started to deform and break around 380-500Kg. That makes sense because expensive bike helmets like that are designed to break in a way that slows you down and dissipates energy, you want the helmet to break. Think about this, if a 100Kg person lands on their head it is going to have at least a 100Kg force on it and would want the helmet to crumble not their skull or spine. The "best" helmets actually crush the easiest but do so in a controlled manner, notice how the specialized helmet was completely destroyed but was still held together?
Yeah just like the crumple zone of a car. In a car accident the front of the vehicle works as a.....pillow. When the car get an impact it starts to crumple. The reason for that is because its trying to absorb most of the energy. If(imagine) the car was 100% made of hardened steel, it would barely crumple, so the impact(in Newton) on you wouldn't be reduced which means it would be very very likely to die from a 40mph crash. The faster you hit an object the bigger the impact, the crumpling slows you down. My English isn't perfect but you'll get the point. I find these thing fascinating, there so much more to it than "oh yeah...the thing broke because it took a hit". I love physics
Hydraulic Press Channel except the cabbage took most of the force, the helmet didnt make contact with the table until 1000kg which made it break instantly
Text message to Anni: Lauri's been in an accident and his head popped off and rolled across the ground for a little while. So, take your time.. he's not going anywhere.
As everyone else mentioned, there is an inverse relationship between the "strength" of a helmet and the safety it provides to the user. A helmet that's perfectly rigid transfers 100% of the momentum of the collision to the head inside the helmet. Basically in that scenario your head is very damaged. A helmet that crumples and deforms under the collision absorbs the kinetic energy of the collision and increases the time of deceleration during an impact. The force your head experiences in a collision is equal to your momentum divided by the time of the collision. So a rigid helmet creates a brief collision and a large force on your head, and a soft helmet that crumples creates a longer collision and a much weaker force on your head. Kind of a stupid video, but it looks cool I guess

lol. this is not really showing how much they protect. a helmet of stone would perform well in this test, but kill you even if you fall without beiing hit
Well. (If you ignore degradation of the components from 100eds of test cycles would one be able to do a rough relationship of flat load and impact tests. F=ma. Impact=(roughly) acceleration * load =force. You can always get a relative value between components if you evaluate stuff in a fixed position/condition. Ie. handlebars of the same model. Tested in three conditions. New, worn, deep scratches..

I replace mine every other year (I’m a commuter, so my helmets see a lot more abuse than your regular fair-weather rider). Also, some helmets are built different than others, so get a ‘true’ read on what motorcycle helmets take could be tricky.
Remember kids, when crushing your head with a hydraulic press, wear your helmet!

Motorcycle helmets are make to break to absorb the impact due to speeds
So does bicycle helmets (less than 400 gram) and still they keep their shape better than much heavier motorcycle helmets (round 1400 gram)
Mountainbiking is worse than just some motorcycling.
Having a lot of pressure of a hard hit on a helmet is not a true test of its abilities, just like seeing a smashed up car can look less safe than a car in the same crash with much less visible damage.
i think the motorcycle helmets are made to resist being broken down as the slide on the road. so if you crash going 100 on tarmac you won't get your head scraped up
plus the force here is coming from the top, you dont see many crashes where the guy hits the top of his head, the helmet should be sideways...

Cabbage
It's cabbage.
Who all just wait for “ So here we go” ? 😂😂🤝
Exactly. There must be a deformation zone to absorb the impact. Something has to break and better be it the helmet than one's head...

IRL to
Is impossible
AMG video game references, never heard those before ever, on any video... ever
You mean welding face masks?

What a flawed test, in the first one you're compressing the cabbage before the helmet touches the base
I was wondering why nobody is complaigning about this. I think they made it because the sponsor didnt want to see his helmet get torn apart.
They reached 800kg even before the helmet touch the base. that means a cabbage can take 800kg?

And carbon vs steel vs aluminium! Explosions!!
BILTEMA Körv vs Circle k korv

That wouldn't say much, a bike will never have this flat load, to test bike components you need to make hundreds of impact-tests.
Well. (If you ignore degradation of the components from 100eds of test cycles would one be able to do a rough relationship of flat load and impact tests.
F=ma.
Impact=(roughly) acceleration * load =force.
You can always get a relative value between components if you evaluate stuff in a fixed position/condition.
Ie. handlebars of the same model. Tested in three conditions. New, worn, deep scratches..
