  • A single mother wants revenge on the man who killed her child.
HOLLOW is used with permission from Paul Holbrook. Learn more at paulholbrook.co.uk.
A grieving mother has received some startling news: the drunk driver who killed her child is being released early from prison. Already struggling with difficult emotions, Laura feels an intense surge of anger and hatred, wanting to get revenge on the man who killed her daughter. Though she knows wanting to kill someone is wrong, the ferocity of her feelings pushes her over the edge.
Seeking help, she tries to find solace and guidance from a local vicar, Father Hill. The vicar himself is a man who faces racial abuse, and he also struggles with feelings of anger, revenge and retribution. Despite his prayers for her and the counsel he tries to give her, Laura begins going down a dark path, stalking the drunk driver, who is still a heavy drinker. Her conscience tortures her for her choices -- and begins to pull in the vicar -- until the war between her morality and her thirst for revenge pushes her to the brink.
Directed and written by Paul Holbrook, this short revenge drama captures the moral and emotional war within a woman and a man, who both are essentially good people facing dark impulses. On the surface, they couldn't be more different in terms of gender, race and life situation. And yet both struggle with their impulses for vengeance and retribution in a harsh, cruel and indifferent world -- impulses that intertwine in unpredictable ways as the narrative proceeds.
Shot with a sense of grim, intimate naturalism, the film has its moments of suspense and tension but its overall journey is a more psychological one. The arc is less about the pursuit of retribution -- though we do see Laura hunt down the drunk driver that killed her young daughter -- than about the burning desire to make someone suffer, weighed against knowing that enacting such vengeance goes against one's moral code.
With such an internal focus, the writing and editing metes out the drama at a deliberate pace, making sure viewers understand the interplay of thoughts and feelings in the characters and how they lead to their actions. As a result of such intimate immersion in the characters, the stakes are changed: it's not just a question of whether Laura will get her revenge, but what she will compromise as a human being if she succeeds. Actor Laura Bayston's performance plays in these shades of moral, murky gray, complicated by her devastating grief, her pricks of conscience and her self-loathing at her inability to take decisive action.
The narrative's emotional scale becomes even more layered and complicated with the addition of Father Hill as a main character. Played by actor Karl Collins as a haunted soul, the vicar is a deeply moral man who nevertheless struggles with his anger at his racist tormentors. The development of the character adds questions of a spiritual and religious nature to the story and widens how the viewer frames the increasingly desperate, sad story. It becomes not just a test of morality, but also a question about faith, both in humanity and in the meaning of life itself.
Can these two flawed, deeply human people find peace? Is Father Hill's faith misplaced in a world indifferent to people's suffering? What happens when we don't trust or believe in a moral universe and take matters of justice and retribution into our hands? Such questions propel HOLLOW to its haunting, devastating conclusion -- one that plays out in ways that are both unpredictable and yet tragically not unexpected.

      WOW
This incredible film ripped my metaphorical heart out of my chest, stomped all over it, shoved it back in and said "There now try and live"
      WOW
Unfortunately I think most of us can relate this to an event in their lives regardless of the content.
I struggle with the insane notion that some people will never understand or know the feeling of empathy.
Thank you Paul, I hope your metaphorical heart is healing as well.
      Kim.

Absolutely perfect short with so many lessons and leaving what happened next up to us. I think he put his own prints on the knife and turned himself in to police. She doesn’t go to prison but lives with the guilt of what she did just like he was for killing her daughter.

This movie makes us consider that child killers might have some redeeming quality.
      I refuse to believe that.
      The killer's soul is empty.
Anger and bitterness can make our souls hollow as well.
The priest fought against that tendency successfully whereas the mother lost that battle.

    Wohooo... what a story....
I see someone understanding Faith had something to do with scenario....
    Spoiler...
Both parties - man who killed little girl and mother of the girl were going through personal hell,,, suffering, priest gave his life to God having most likely "colourful" past himself hence he understood...both sides and was eager to resolve this entangled situation...he wanted be vessel of God...and He was, sacrifice himself literally ( obviously didn't expect that but hey, God works in mysterious ways), then the woman understood in split second how revenge is destructive and the man redeem himself by taking murder upon himself and going back to prison....all three got what they needed in unconventional way, but that's how our stubbornness pushing all around us to often drastic measures.... forgiveness is like best thing we can offer, though sometimes hurt is so great there will be "blood sacrifice"...in split moments three of them crossed miles of spiritual journey... hope for two of them alive it will end in final reconciliation with God's reality.. amazing story, very "biblical" with modern outlook ❤❤❤

      Yeah, I agree.
Throughout the film, I was frustrated about so many aspects, like the difficulty in understanding what they were saying, and how cliche here struggles seemed. After watching the full film, I was shocked at how much I liked it.
I honestly wonder if I would like it just as much, if I couldn't understand a word. I noticed that the actress's body language was nuanced. The preacher didn't seem over the top. Also, the story arcs were less about morals and who is a hero, and more about just struggles and outcomes.
I really loved it. I am jealous that I didn't get to act in it.

I don't think that this film was good for exploring morals. Due to the nature of the arcs [I don't want to spoil anything here], I think that it was important to make sure that morals were only a vehicle for the characters to ensure that the story happens. The story happening is more of a priority.

There are many lessons in this story but the biggest takeaway to me is that, you can't have revenge without sacrificing part of yourself. That is too great a loss to endure. You will likely end up with the same feelings of grief, loss and bitterness but with added feelings of regret and guilt. Revenge is Mine sayeth the Lord. Faith requires you to trust that God will avenge and our need for revenge is about a loss or a lack of faith.

    What an Enging!
If she let's someone else take responsibility for her actions she's worse than the guy who killed her Child?
In the Book of Leviticus there were Laws and Sentences set for the Nation of Isreal regarding Manslaughter, Murder, and preventing accidental death on your property by proper building codes.
Nowhere were executions ever mentioned or a life for a life.
There were Cities of Sanctuary for the Condemned to live out their Terms or until the Jubilee Year, which occurred every 50 years. Approximately a Generation.
Job lost EVERYTHING but his life! This Woman has NOTlost Everything, yet.
She has her Free- Will, her Freedom, a home, a Support System, and God.
Getting Vengeance won't bring her Child back or take away her pain?
Only time will heal that wound if ever.

I think the Christian faith is lacking when it comes to teaching forgiveness. They would all have been better guided by the philosophical teachings of the Buddha! Only when we release the burden of hatred and resentment which is like a hot coal will we cease to be burned by it.
