Cassie is a creatively ambitious art student with a big exhibition deadline on the horizon. But she's having difficulty working, what with critical instructors and her own anxiety getting in her way. Her sister is also overprotective of Cassie's medical condition, policing her medication and controlling her social life.
But when Cassie has a seizure after a stressful day in class, something about her has changed: her drawing hand has developed a will and power to act on its own. Cassie struggles with her new "condition," but as her hand begins to exhibit a boldness Cassie hasn't shown in her life and art, Cassie must learn to embrace herself or continue to struggle.
Directed by Joseph Simmons from a script co-written with Damien Knightley, this short psychological drama has a premise that would fit easily in a body horror narrative. But it elevates it to the level of metaphor, using it to explore a young woman's drive to become an artist, as well as how her creativity is intertwined with her agency -- or lack of it -- in her life.
The writing layers many aspects of Cassie's psychological landscape, from her older sister's controlling approach to her friend's seemingly selfless concern to the exacting instructor that Cassie must please to get ahead in her quest to become an artist. All these layers are deftly woven together, making up a complex character study of a girl often powerless in her own life, and treated as such by the people around her. Like the somber, muted colors and cinematography of the film, Cassie's world is restrained and repressed.
When her hand begins to act of its own accord, though, something shifts in Cassie. Cassie's hand creates art that is bold in line and gesture, and often a direct reflection of the emotions that she's long held at bay. It also begins to exert its own will in Cassie's life. Actor Iona Champian plays this almost supernatural element with great subtlety. Cassie's own "relationship" to her painting hand starts with horror, but then it develops into fascination and even trust. And when her hand takes decisive action beyond the canvas, Cassie has learned to accept this part of her, transforming many of her relationships, her art and even her life.
With steady, solid storytelling and a psychologically penetrating approach to its fascinating premise, FROM SCRATCH tracks a journey from passivity to self-determination, capturing how autonomy, self-acceptance and self-expression are all intertwined with one another. We often hear about "finding our voice," and Cassie herself has found hers by the film's end. But that begins with accepting who we are, and believing that what we have to say matters in the first place.

Her hand could be considered a disability, but from what the cinamatography implied it was an expression of her deepest self, the one no one allowed her to show. It displayed a certain self hatred at the beginning, but by the end she had made peace within herself.
It's striking the difference between the way her hand acts before she unleashes it on the canvas, and after. After, it only shows hostility to her unsupportive "boyfriend" as well as her mother.
The scene with her mother and her on the ground shows her mother trying her best to just console her daughter as opposed to the way she's treated her in the past, mildly condescending and motherly. Due to that, at first the hand rejects her advance, and she has to fight it to get in and just hug her daughter. Lizzy( I think that's her name) runs away, both in the fear that her mother might hurt her, as well as the fear that her hand- reflecting her true inward feelings- might hurt her mother.
Her mother is then able to approach her and she is both allowed as well as allows herself to be vulnerable.
In the end, seeing the true expression of her own artistry displayed triumphantly on the wall, she and her hand finally find a peace. Her outward self and inward self are one.
It brings up a question: is she more disabled before or after her hand goes "haywire"??? The advent of this "disability" is the catalyst for an inward change that finally allows her to function in society on her terms.
Would it have happened had she not had this "disability"? In that case, her hand wasn't a disability at all. Rather it was the very enabler of her transformation, as well as its guide and impetus.

It's made me kinda hate how long movies are. When I see movies it's like they're just adding/extending a scene(s) to make it longer not better.

I found myself feeling quite sorry for the girl "Cassie" (?) as she was not at all understood by her boyfriend and yes, that slap he got was certainly deserved. Her mom showed a mother's love for her daughter, no matter the condition or severity but rather she embraced her daughter and her work! While a somewhat sci-fi symptom for a hand to have a mind of its own, the film was well thought out and very nicely delivered!!
It’s not necessarily a “sci-fi symptom”. Alien Hand Syndrome is a real thing.
Oliver Sacks has written many interesting books about similar symptoms. I don't know exactly if Alien Hand Syndrome was among them, but I think so.
As an artist, my best pieces come from dreams, simple observation and a lot of research to complete the pieces with precision. The dreams are the best, half my work comes from dreams, it's pure madness walking up to one of these interesting dreams.
Okay but this isn't about you, so..
Having seizures is not fun at all I had to deal with them when I was little. Then at 23 till about 44 when I found out u was diabetic. So when my sugars were high I had them. So no matter what you do you always have to be careful not to over stress yourself but even when you do your best they still happen. So I wasn't driving till afterwards so now sugars for me are fine.. but her stress is with something else Both are call epilepsy. Something to deal with and not all seizures are the same. She has grandmal seizures and focal grand mal seizures. Which is a serious issue in her case mine wasn't nearly as bad. But I know what it was like to have them too.
My sister just found out hers are related to blood sugar, too! She has both high and low blood sugar, and now that she's started to regulate it, the seizures have stopped. They're completely crippling and shockingly painful! I never appreciated how much they hurt before. Now it's like, DUH, if every muscle in your body is in spasm, of COURSE it hurts! Anyway, I'm sorry that you've suffered from them, too. It sucks.
A little ironic that they put the flashing lights in there which cause many to HAVE seizures. It gives me migraines but luckily I closed my screen in time.

There was nothing special about her hand. She always had the talent. Just like she always wanted to slap the crap out of her idiot boyfriend. Her hand was just an excuse for outwardly becoming who she already was.

Oh wow, amazing to see a film from a fellow Northern Film School alumnus on Omeleto! Joe is a fantastic filmmaker and this film should strike a chord with any artist striving to express themselves authentically. So proud of Iona (Cassie) and Corin (Theo) too! I shot a film with them both back in 2019, and then wrapped another with Iona this spring. They're both absolutely excellent actors and this piece is no exception. Well done guys!

@@allisonjames2923 I took the hand's aggression more as an expression of her need to unleash herself than any actual murderous intent. Once she was able to get her inner turmoil on paper, the hand unclenched.

Medication non-adherence for people experiencing epilepsy should not be encouraged. The workload of a single parent in trying to work with a non-adherent young person on a holistic treatment plan can be exhausting and isolating, particularly where there is physical violence and self-harm perpetrated by the young person. So there is some concerning tropes delivered here.

a hand is controlled by an arm, great film but that concept weakened what is was all about.
