If there were a “love” button, I would press it for this video. I was hungry for some story about Schubert, and this wonderful gentleman provides not only the story but also the music and perspectives of Schubert’s life and character. I really wish there would be more videos like this on TH-cam.
The covid lockdown was worth it for having given Tengstrand the leisure to produce this documentary. Brilliant and never a dull moment or trite comment. I love Schubert more than ever.
That was so wonderful. The most sensitive performance of Schubert I have ever heard.Like hearing it real for the first time.Thank you so so much.I am nearly eighty years old
I came here to learn more about this composer that I fell in love with a few days ago. After decades of not having any taste for classical music one day as part of some feet on TH-cam I heard Schubert for the first time. I didn't know what the music was I just knew that there was an innocence to it that made me feel a lot of feelings. So, I've just begun my journey! I thought I'd like others, but alas, I found them loud, abrasive. And not warm at all. I hope when I listen to others by him, they will resonate with my soul like" Serenade"
I'd have liked to have had a Music teacher like you when I was school. Thank you ... I'll look forward to watching the rest later ... you expertly took us through Schubert's life ... and your time at the Piano showed your respect and sensitivity to this Composer.
Thank you so much I was craving a kind of documentary about Schubert and this enchanted me ! Amazing playing also, Ständchen’s my favorite piece of Schubert. Thanks again I clicked the follow button. From France,
Your interpretation of that first piece, sounded excellent! And thanks to whomever set the audio up on the piano. Very nice, natural, and best of all, clear tone!
Thank you, I've been a Schubert lover for many decades but I so enjoy learning more. I recently heard Jessye Norman singing 'The Earlking' on youtube; what a superb singer for this short music drama.
Thank you. This was delightful. You added to my understanding of Franz, and i much much enjoyed your creative hands. Franz is accessible. No props. No excesses. He took us straight to his heart.
Extraordinary! Franz Schubert has been one of my favorite composers for most of my 80 years. After a lifelong appreciation of most of his Lieder and piano compositions, in the last decade I started to pay more attention to his chamber music and symphonies, and I concluded that he is second to no other classical composer. In fact, he deserves first place together with Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and a few others ( at this level there is no order ). I have to thank Mr. Tengstrand for his interpretation of the 3d Impromptu Op. 90 as... a Lied !! Of course, it is pure lyricism, but I had never heard it like this. I will start to play it at a faster tempo and bring out the singing like he does. It is part of the Celestial music that Shubert was destined to bring down to us. I am also thankful for the excellent performance of Schubert's Ständchen, of which I didn't know that Liszt had put his rushing fingers into. I like its first part, where the piano replaces an uncertain voice, but I can do without the later ornamentations, ha ha. I will get the score, and now play its first part without having to sing to it.
Amazingly great and educational program. Thank you so much for enlightening me even more on one of my favorit composers. Wonderful piano playing as well. Thank you very much!
I am delighted to have found this video three years late - thank you algorithm! Per I saw you play years ago at Scandinavia House in NYC and still have the copy of your CD I purchased at that time, "Me and My Steinway." This is a happy coincidence. I am a late-in-life piano student so I am looking forward to checking out your other videos. Cheers from New Hampshire!
How nice to hear from you! The Scandinavia House series is still going strong, and the series has now spread to Princeton also! Thank you so much for your comment!
How refreshing! Interesting information and VERY beautifully played. Clearly straight from the heart, which is rare in a superficial world so focused on technique and 'impressive' performances rather than touching performances. I´m very grateful that not everyone joins the 'circus.' And I remember that you used to practice at KMH many years ago when I studied there. But I didn´t have the pleasure to listen to your playing back then.
I am thrilled to see and hear this. During covid, the children I care for ages 5 and 8 have become very interested in classical composers. Haydn, Mozart ,and now, Shubert. I am reading them old books published in the 1930'S . The illustrations are in black and white. Your hands on the piano are beautiful, as are the melodies we can listen to .Thank you.
Thank you so much for this comment, there are few things more inspiring than contributing to children's experience of and interest for the wonderful world of classical music. Heartwarming to read about your book-reading, say hello to the kids from me!
Thank you for making that video. This has greatly increased my understanding of Schubert's life, struggles and how we were so graced to have him for the sort while he was on this earth. I look forward to watching your other videos. I really enjoy how you put his history in context with the political environment and laws of the time.
Thank you so much, this makes me inspired and motivated to dig into the third episode which I am making now. Planned premiere is January 31, which is the birthdate of Schubert!
I'm so grateful that you uploaded these videos on Schubert's life and music. I'm starting a new project with my string quartet where we provide guided mini concerts where we try to show emotions / stories using excerpts of music and Schubert's Death and The Maiden is one of our pieces. You inspired me because your work proves that understanding the context of the piece helps us appreciate it and connect to it more. That's what happened to me when I listened to yours and your wife performance at the end of part II. That's really great. Thank you and greetings from Amsterdam.
This was amazing. You really have great talent in transposing your knowledge, insights and skills to others. Thank you! And looking forward to new similar content. :)
I just now made the final little changes to the last episode! I will upload it as soon as it is rendered, so the Premiere link should be up tonight. See you here on Sunday!
I think he is above Bach, Bach was very genius but it seems to my, my personal preference bach just wrote as many notes as he could fit within a chord in 4 bars
Very enjoyable and well-done. I do not think, however, that it has been definitively established that Schubert died of syphilis. Unlike the tragic Schumann who almost certainly did, Schubert did not exhibit the terrible ravages of late-stage syphilis and more likely died of typhoid fever. I
Thanks Ann, you are correct. I will actually mention that in the last episode. I guess one can be fairly sure that it contributed to an early death, though. Scholars have different point of views, the most likely might be that he died of a combination of continuous fever and a body weakened by both syphilis and the mercury treatment.
@@WorldOfBeethoven Exactly. His body was doubtless weakened by syphilis and whatever harsh treatments he underwent for it. I mention this not to nitpick--your documentary is really very fine--but to put things in perspective. Schubert was thwarted both personally and professionally but I do not think his life was tragic. Newcomers to his life and music may wrongly conclude that it was, though, if some of the facts are not put into context. That, in turn, may affect how they experience his music, which should never be taken except on its own glorious terms. Again, thank you for a presentation far above others available here.
Thank you so much for taking the time to not only give the historical background but to play so beautifully, Do you know what Saliery thought of Schubert's compositions? It would be most interesting to know. I love and often play Schubert's songs. His melodic lines flow with the simplicity of true melody and his harmonies seem to flow alongside. Thank you once again.
