Thanks for this video! I got a Netherland dwarf who didn't have the dwarf gene and I am actually honestly so glad she grew bigger. She's still so cute but has more 'regular' rabbit like traits. Before you get a rabbit its so easy to just go for cutesness, But after they have your whole heart in their tiny little body you realize, you want the healthiest long living rabbit ever and their looks go away when you look at them with unconditional love.

I've always been hesitant to make this video because I didn't want to upset other bunny owners but I think it's too important not to talk about. In an ideal world, I'd like to see breeding more heavily regulated so only a small number of qualified and licensed breeders who breed for better health outcomes can do it. There are too many bunnies being born from breeders trying to achieve some arbitrary look. They are being bred faster than they can be saved and so many get given up or euthanised due to genetic health issues.

Thank you so much for this video and all the explanation, I had recently an argument with my boyfriend over Mini Lops and the cruelty to keep on breeding them like that.

I’m glad you did ! I didn’t know these things. My bunny is just the regular bunny lol she was hanging out under my bushes and I brought her in as she would have gotten killed. I guess someone abandoned her 😢 she is now a free roam happy bunny 🐰

Good post. Lost two lops to jaw abscesses. Now have a lionhead with misaligned front teeth that must be trimmed every 3 weeks. His hair is also something that must be regularly trimmed or he can’t clean himself without getting hair caught in his teeth. I’m furious this kind of breeding is allowed.

Please don’t support the breeding of lop or brachycephalic rabbit breeds. Give an abandonned rabbit a home and it will make him/her so grateful ♥Thank you so much for talking about this serious topic, we definitely need to raise more awareness on this issue 😊

It is even worse for dogs! Especially the extremely popular French bulldogs.

wow I always thought of lop ears as the bunny version of a pug but I never knew they were actually less healthy too

Thank you for making this video. More ppl need to be aware of this issue.
We got our lop from a rescue where she was abandoned due to health issues that you mentioned brought about by the very characteristics she was bred for.

thank you for talking about this. its SO expensive to fix the medical issues. I don't think people realize that and the breeders gloss over it so they can sell the bunnies.

so true. I see ads from breeders that really sell the dream of this easy cuddly pet and its just not true

Im glad you made this video, like you said its a big issue that doesn't really get discussed often which leads to many people (like myself) finding out about these potential issues and difficulty's after owning one. My first bun Snow was a lop and even though we got lucky and she never really suffered from any ear or sinus issues, once I found out it was common for them I decided not to have another lop eared bun unless its a rescue or foster situation. Its just sad that people would continue to breed something that's likely to have health problems just because it looks cute or cool, pugs and bulldogs are in a similar situation too.

Yes that so true about the breeders , I have 5 bunnies all recused from the breeder next door the bunnies started coming over and I of course started feeding them and research what they eat before I would give them anything

This breeding for special aesthetic features is common in dogs as well, and they suffer from the same facial issues because of it, it is an important issue to raise, as you said, it could end in your pet needing expensive corrective surgery, surgery that they need to live functional and comfortable lives.

Thank you for making this video! I found your channel about your aggressive rabbit bonding video as I am going through that tough stride right now.
I totally agree on your point of view. With rabbits being the 3rd most surrendered pet in the USA, lack of support for them is appalling. I see too many people on social media parade their lop rabbits and all I can think of how many people see their favorite influencer with one and want to go get a lop rabbit instead of other breeds. Then they find out how hard it is to take care of a rabbit, especially ones with genetic issues.
It's so sad to see this and I always wondered about the more flatter faced one. I have rabbits that have more of a snout and thankful for that. I got into rabbits from finding one in my yard. I put up fliers to find his owner, but he ended up staying with me. And I am currently trying to bond him to a friend.

Any time an animal is made to look cute, it (usually) never ends well. Cats, dogs, rabbits, they all have to deal with the medical implications of it.
I own lizards, specifically bearded dragons. And we're seeing a major issue with breeders that line-breed to an insane amount and it's causing major issues. The Red monster lines getting the absolute worst of it since it's new and people want to make loads of money.
But any time people bring up health concerns with certain genetics or breeding practices, it's brushed off as "just starting drama" and ultimately it gets nowhere.
Having strong, healthy bloodlines and genetics should be important to people for the health of their family members. It shouldn't be impossible to just not continue to reproduce a certain trait or help make a more healthy version of it like with retro pugs.

Thank you for this video! I've never been a fan of lop eared rabbits - sure they're cute, but the health issues aren't worth it. Of course I'm not against adopting a lop eared bun, but I won't support the breeding.

Thank you for making this video ❤ my Holland Lop had a horrible abscess behind his eye. His eye had to be removed. I am sure it is related to compact skull 😢

my 1st bunny was a lop bunny she was a mini lop and the fly strike was what happened because of her butt which then started a chain of events that led up to her passing she had so many vet visits in her 4years of life. She wasn't from a breeder but my mate had a mini lop and a flemish as pets and he got out before they got fixed XDDD So I got Momo. She had no ear issues but I have been following you for a while so when I heard I was checking her ears once every couple of days. My 2nd boy is probably an angora/lionhead mixed with a minilop and he has the smaller squished face. So I am checking up on him twice a day to make sure he's okay, and if I forget, he jumps onto my bed to remind me. I brush him after I wake up and before I go to bed because he's soooo fluffy and I'm worried he might get GI from how much fur he has. He has signs of mega colon but can't be tested and the newer vet he saw was not rabbit savvy and no idea what I was talking about.
