  • A short update on why I was getting block occupancy errors last time plus a few more problems to iron out!
Watch out for the emergency stop as I nearly drive 55 007 Pinza off the edge!

Hello Grant, only came a cross your channel just over a week ago, and I've just watched the last five updates back to back to catch up on your progress. I'm really impressed with what you have done so far, I'm like you and building my first layout. Just an end to end for now but I find it really informative watching people's layout's on you tube and then having a go your self. So keep up the good work and thank for sharing, Dave.

Thanks for the comments Dave, much appreciated!
TH-cam has been great for getting on in this hobby, so many people have so much knowledge which they share freely & there's some fantastic layouts!

Hi Grant, great to see you sorted out the problem. Cheers John.

This is great. I love seeing folks use the advanced features of the ECoS. ESU have implemented an upgrade to Railcom that they call Railcom Plus which their decoders support. Loco's with Lenz or Zimo decoders, who support Railcom might display limited information. I hope you can find such a loco to test and give feedback.

Thanks John. Railcom plus was implemented by ESU & as far as i'm aware it has also been adopted by Lenz

    Hi Grant
Glad you've sorted the detector issue, works a treat now, I must make time to have a go at this myself.
My 58 had a similar problem on a curve out of the helix, it was the only loco that always derailed, I had to smooth out the curve a lot to stop it and now it runs okay. My other two 58s ran fine and I think they have different bogies?
You'll soon sort the track issues, bit of packing and tweaking and everything should be sweet.
    Cheers Paul

Thanks Paul. I was wondering if it was something to do with the wheels/bogies but i will be trying to smooth out the dog leg to see if that works!

Hi Grant you can always check the back to back too but I'm sure it'll be the kink in the track just throwing the wheels off.

    Hi Grant,
I had a feeling it would be something simple like that.. It usually is. I noticed the point just as you took Pinza onto the fright line bit there was a drop on the trackwork and it took your centre wheels completely off the track (at 4:09) Don't know if you already spotted it but it might be worth packing something underneath it if possible?
    Cheers, Michael

Thanks for that Michael, I hadn't noticed.
It turns out it's not a dip, the very end of the trackwork on the point is actually bent, it looks like i've dropped something quite heavy on it & it's actually bent the track! I'll have to see if i can straighten it out.

Hi Grant, its amazing how such simple error can have you scratching your head. Is installing Block Detectors expensive and will they work with any installed decoders or just ESU?...Simon

Using block detectors doesn't have to be expensive, there are less costly ways to do it out there but if you use ESU Railcom detectors (like the 50098) then i'm afraid the prices are a bit eye watering. Only Railcom detectors will report back a specific loco's name, non-Railcom detectors will just report that the track is occupied. You also need to fit Railcom enabled decoders in your loco's for this to work, i believe all ESU decoders are Railcom compliant & i think Lenz & Zimo are too.

    Hi Grant
I am subscribed to your channel from the begining and my question is I have just purchased Anyrail and I know you designed your layout with the program. I have scoured TH-cam for help with this program but cannot find any reference to designing multi level baseboards. I am no idiot as people say that the program is simple to use and the form is rubbish. Can you please point me in the right direction.

      Thanks John.
i suppose there's two ways to do this. you could create the bottom level first as separate anyrail plan & subsequent levels would be different plans.
In my plans however i have set each of my three tracks (main, branch & goods) at different levels. The branch line is the lowest level & being the starting point, everything here is at 0mm (the number is arbitrary really, its the distance between each elevation thats important). The main line loop is then at 115mm & the goods line reaches a maximum of 185mm. The goods line in my plan is constantly changing height, its a very up & down plan!
To transition between heights i use the "smooth slope" button to try & ensure no gradient is over 3%.
For clarity, put each level of your layout on a different layer, then when youre working on one you can turn the others off so you can better see what youre doing. the design will be confusing if you have tracks directly above one another if you dont do this.
hope that helps, let me know if you need more info. anyrail is a great bit of software, youll be flying once you get used to it!
