      Coltrane here is completely out of tune :) he often was on soprano on live releases, usually it doesn't matter because his focus wasn't on perfection. Must also be said that soprano saxophnoes of that era were at least poor in intonation... the piano is out of tune, too and the tape has got some problem :) and probabily this is the main problem with the whole intonation thing here

    Dolphy was pulling the quartet more "outside" and I think that the Impulse executives were against his efforts. His recorded work with Coltrane was suppressed intentionally and given a minimal role. With all the reissues, it's clear how important Dolphy was to the Coltrane quartet, but the public wouldn't have know anything from the recordings that were released in Coltrane's lifetime.

    • @jacobekberg354
      @jacobekberg354 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i don't Think the theory holds water.. imo Impulse gave Coltrane a truly great amount of freedom, and just by appearing on the few Coltrane records released on Impulse at that time (Village Vanguard, Ole, Africa/Brass and Impressions) boosted Dolphy's status a lot. i Think what really hurt this Quartets evolution was the critics... Dolphy and Coltrane was torn apart by especially Down Beat at around the time of this Concert - go back and read Reviews for the Village Vanguard gigs and records and also read the article "Coltrane and Dolphy answers the critics" from a later DB issue if you haven't.
      personally i love the "Ballads", Hartman and Ellington albums and i'm glad we have them amongst all the great heavier LP:s on Impulse.. Tranes discography on that label is rivaled only by Miles on Columbia in my opinion

    • @alf23wlf
      @alf23wlf 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually, I agree with Aaron. The first issues of Coltrane from the Vanguard in 61 and 63, had limited Dolphy. What little they had was milder.
      It was only in the mid-1970s when people got to hear Dolphy's contributions.

      Aaron Alter Interesting Theory, Because Some Critics State And Pointed Out That Coltrane Was Playing Traditional Jazz Until He Met And Started To Play More " Avant Garde" Mr. Dolphy Was Consider In Every Day To Be A " Little Out There" He Wore A Big As_ Fur Coat Wherever He Went, He a Bohemian Style/ Like Individual , More Hippie And Beatnik Before It Before A " Fad"!!!!!!!🎷🌬👌🏾👍🏼😮

    • @ryanphelan6861
      @ryanphelan6861 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Dolphy was welcomed with open arms my Mingus who wasn't exactly a pushover. I think coltranes musical brain saw or more importantly heard the innovation that critics and non pleyers couldn't. Dolphy wasn't ornette you hear him on Oliver Nelson's blues and abstract truth and that album has qualities similar to date I say kind of blue. Dolphy could play and Trane recognized it and even mentioned he was only player he ever felt challenged by as an innovational equal
