Farewell Eric Dolphy aka So long, Eric 00:45
Carlye Goodbye aka Peggy's Blue Skylight 05:36
Meditations 11:29
Charles Mingus (contrabass),
Eric Dolphy (alto sax, bass clarinet, flute)
Clifford Jordan (tenor sax),
John Artur Byard Jr (piano)
Charles Dannie Richmond (drums).
This was recorded two months before Eric Dolphy died. So Long, Eric and thank you for your music.
A tragedy considering how fit he still was in that concert.
R I P under rated genius. Maligned by the ignorant establishment.
I love Eric Dolphy
And Mingus
br0 i love eric dolphy too
Forever Dolphy🙏
Love ‘em both - giants
Me also
We forget what a groundbreaking, technical bassist Mingus was. His playing is often overlooked for his compositions…..
Nobody has really picked up Eric Dolphy's mantle, even now, 60 years after his death. There's this beautiful internal logic to his playing that's uniquely his. I could listen to stuff like this all day.
I love how Dolphy isn't really framed until its his time to solo, and when he enters his solos HE ENTERS his solo like he owns the joint.
His solo is insane
Instantly recognizable
@@thomasreuter1614 No, his solo is his solo. Billions of people KNOW his solo is insane. Is there any reason mentioning the obvious? This solo is insane, and Church Hill had the blues.
That's Eric..... one off... we've loved every note and animal call he's played in 51 years of listening.
Also loved his time with Trane.
What a treat to see a live recording of Charles Mingus especially with Eric Dolphy
Great, indeed.
One hears so much in Eric Dolphy's performance. The whole linage of Jazz was in him.
After so much noise pollution in my daily life, this really clears out the mental cobwebs. It's like cleansing my brain. Much Appreciated!
Dannie Richmond is a great and underrated drummer, possibly because he spent most of his career with Mingus.
Yes, He played all this with excellent recall,no charts.. He ,obviously did alot of one on one w/ Mingus.
After 60 years this concert but slaps harder now
Dolphy played with a soul that seemed to sense that the time was short and wanted to express as much as he could through a frail body that was overflowing with divine speech notes cascading like a waterfall of pure ecstasy!
Yes, apparently unknown to him at this time right here, two months before he passed, Eric had a very serious diabetic problem that was not diagnosed and that’s what killed him. Yes, the stupid German doctors didn’t help by assuming he was a drug addict and giving him other stuff, but his diabetes would’ve killed him eventually anyway…..
Nothing like jazz from the 60s
Thankfully I got to see Mingus and Dannie in NYC With Roland Kirk! A frightening experience that stays with me 50 years later....
You lucky Guy!
Dannie was such a beast. Never understood why his name isn't mentioned as often as other jazz drummers.
That's so heavy...some serious bragging rights...
When Eric Dolphy puts on his sunglasses, you can tell he's about to warp the space/time fabric.
Mingus n Dolphy are heavyweight in jazz and modern music beside other Giants , always be must named this great composers. Viva Jazz forever !!!! All against racism!!!!
We in Europe were less racists than USA. Still we are
Charles Mingus is ahead of its time, his music still sounds modern, as is Eric Dolphy’s playing.
Clifford Jordan and Eric Dolphy in the horn section. It doesn't get any better than that!
Never seen this . Ive been listening to Dolphy since about 1972 . Wow !
Dolphy gets more out of whatever instrument hes playing in just 4 bars than any musician of his day. What a breath of fresh air he was.
Rest in infinite peace Eric Dolphy & Charles Mingus. Salutations to all passed.
Mingus played with all the major influencers in this music, so it's such a treat to hear him with these musicians. Dolphy would have been the new template, and he was a true multi - instrumentalist. I love some of Byard's voicings - especially the thick crunchy chords. Richmond is a wonderful drummer with Mingus. All of the musicians here are examples of what needs to be seen now, more than ever.
Life has meaning because of this. If this was the only beauty and everything else was hell, I would say life is still grand.
There were a number of years where, other than music, my life was hell. Those were really great years.
Wow, what a great comment. It’s a deep insight and yet simple at the same time. Kudos….😊

This is so crazy to watch... thanks so much for the upload. Colorizing this really makes it seem like they're closer and more "real" for some reason and it's super cool.
Exactly it look like today
I wish people wouldn't colourise archive film. It is a distortion of historical documents.
Maybe that's coz people aren't black and white
Not really, not when you can refer to the original black and white to experience it that way. This concert happened in real life in color, and the colorization of the film is really quite good. Makes it seem like less distant (I agree with the above comment) and that is good, as these important American musicians might be remembered better and for longer as a result. @@Khayyam-vg9fw
@@jonaszepog1829 It was not in this artificial colour. Such a process is a distortion of a historical document, and while it might create the illusion of less distance it actually removes us further from the genuine event as recorded at the time.
If there is any sanity left in the world (yes, I know), then musicians of this calibre do not and will not require fake colour and other falsification to preserve their reputations.
Hearing about what happened to Eric Dolphy is so sad. Every time I see him play, knowing what happened, it gives the song a sad undertone. He was a musical great the likes of which this world may never see again and he was stolen from us. I hope wherever he is he can look down and see the influence of his work continuing to change things for the better. He will always be missed.
dolphy to the point...and makes the difference between boring successors and his vision that he has done ... amazing!
such a joy to witness these 5 masters interplay so magically. Mingus always great geniu leader. So grateful I got a chance to see his Fridat sessions at the Five Spot. But this performance is at a whole pther level. Thank you for showing it.
Great to see Jaki Byard footage. I’ve only seen him at the Berlin Piano Festival, 1965.
Mingus is one of the most underrated conductors of his time; his unorthodox techniques are the most wonderful things to witness. The way he waves his bow is hypnotizing. 11:29
And, unlike most American bassists, he used the French bow.
underrated? he was and is considered on of the most relevant composers/arranger/conductor/band leader in whole jazz hystory... as well as Elington or Jelly Roll Morton... and a great bass player, too
@@emilianoturazzi I was making a joke simply about the way he waved his bow as if he were conducting an orchestra. What I said wasn’t meant to suggest that he was an underrated musician and composer
@@evanfurrow7115 sorry I didn't understand :) - it was a nice joke to be honest :)
I would like to know from which year is this recording?
The fact that all of.this exists is just fantastic
How awesome to have this document of Eric rwo months before he passed away in a Berlin hospital 😢
Completely knocks me out. Dolphy leaves the planet.
And I love jaki on piano but the whole band is totally awesome.
Im rather speechless.
Feel blessed I saw this. Thank you very much. 👍🏽
What incredible sound, Eric Dolphy is unforgettable!
Thank goodness this gem has been preserved!
"toppen" we say in Sweden ... just the J A Z Z I like .. from age 15 until 85 - thank youuuuu !!
Toppen! All the best to you, my new Swedish friend, all the way from Ohio, USA!@@bjornjanlert1013
dolphy..... Love so much the way he starts soloing.
He plows right in and takes the band with him. SO GOOD.
I truly love dolphy. So wild and free. He used to piss off miles in there brief moment together
There's a video of Eric telling Charles that he was going to go out on his own and form his own group. Charles, known to be quite oppressive at times, was busting his balls about his recent musings about leaving. Mingus was a great mentor to Eric and I'm sure he was really just trying to boost Eric's self confidence in the only way he knew how.
11:42 I have four kids and this reminds me to force at least ONE to take up the flute. ❤️🎼
This is delicious! Watching this quintet just kickin' it, smiling, playing their hearts out. Damn!
When Dolphy comes in it's like "You gentlemen speak as children do on my home planet. Here is how our adults communicate."
WHAT a band....! Just wow....
I am still moved by "Meditation" after I first listened to it on a Mingus album I used to have (with the solid dark brown cover) back in the 1970s. I think this quintet is the best ensemble I have ever heard. God, do I love Eric Dolphy!
Incredible footage.
Dolphy and Ornette. Kings of avant-garde beauty.
Have played this 4 times in 2 days and have it on now. So great.
Omg GoDs!! Of music!! Dolphy looks epic in that hat and shades!!
I like this music 😍😍
As well you aught!
My goodness they were already amazing and then Eric turns up. Astounding musicians.
This is the best music ever recorded. God bless African American Jazz...
I would thumbs up your comment but if Baphomet is your god, then black folks don't need your blessing kind sir.
Agree, agree
@@zackp3401 It's just an image, i highly doubt there are people seriously worshipping Baphomet, you should look into the Satanic Temple, they are nice people. Not really my bag, but they're a lot less horrible and bad for the world than Evangelicals.
White people invented jazz the blacks just stole it
Dannie Richmond fabulous on the drums
In 1964 Mingus was at his apex. Awesome musician, performer, composer and - way less - organizer and producer of his own projects. An unstable, aggressive and suffering man ahead of his times. A genius.
He couldn't compromise
Eternal God's of Jazz
Just what I needed. Totally organic........yessssssss.
Love the bass clarinet!
Amazing!!
BRAVO!..BRAVO! Mingus/Dolphy jazz legends..THX
Mr Richmond
Mr Byard
Mr Jordan
Love Mingus and Dolphy....in Black & White!
Can be played but never duplicated! Geniuses all!
This is golden footage.
Oh wow Meditation! 🙏
I've seen this video many times in black and white I must say this is a very good job of colorizing.👌🏽
Technicolor or disney would have been better but i’m touched
❤️
This is truly special to be able to see Dolphy & Co. in action -- Thank you!
There were several times where it cut to Jaki and he kept rocking back and forth on the edge of his seat. It kept me on edge thinking he was gonna fall off
Whenever I hear free-form jazz like this I think how it is the purest manifestation of freedom there is - a pure, unattached bliss.
how is it free form, explain yrself ?
@@beanstalk7893 , it is largely self explanatory - simply being less tied to conventions, like a regular tempo.
For me personally it is similar (though hardly identical) to the progressive rock era of the late sixties and early seventies mostly (though it still exists & probably always will) where pieces often either progressed from a definite initial structure before branching out into a much less defined extended jam session, then returned back into the original, more crystalized initial phase.
But that is only an analogy. But to get the general idea, that to me would be a good start. Jazz obviously predated rock, so some might find that comparison insulting, just as some jazz aficionados found Miles Davis’s foray into fusing jazz with rock distasteful; and some folk aficionados were shocked/depressed by Bob Dylan’s embrace of electric instruments.
In short, it is simply about greater freedom.
This recording is amazing! Thanks for posting this! Mingus was amazing and Dolphy was ahead of time. The other musicians are great too. Beautiful
エリックドルフィのアルトサックス&フルート嬉しいです。サイコー😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉
Young Eric with a lot more music inside him. This is modern classical music. Amazing. Mingus genius/gMnius
Gratitude
This is incredible!😊
For those who like Dolphy, go listen to Michel Portal on Dockings: a really good musician with a Dolphy like album, especially the piece Dolphy and Mutinerie, but all the album is a treasure of discovery, like ED always did. You will be served as you wish.
Kudos to Dannie, too...
I've yet to see Jaki Byard mentioned yet, so time to rectify that! He's a true unsung piano player. Such a tragic death: his murder remains unsolved.
What a Gem!!
What a Band!!😊👍🌄
Spectacular.
Heavenly sounds. ❤❤❤❤
I fell in love with Eric Dolphy the first time I heard him. Ask Frank Zappa!
In 1964 I was living in N.Y. and I saw Danny Richmond walking down the street and I decided to follow him. His arms had a load in them and he stopped and stared at this store front for a few minutes. I was on the other side of the street so I didn't know what he was staring at. When he left I crossed the street to see what was there. It was a dry cleaner and the sign on the door said CLOSED.
I don’t understand the point of telling us this.
Timeless
😮I Saw The Same Thing Happen To Star Pitcher For NY Yankees 'El Duque' In Bal Harbour (Surfside) Miami Bch. It Was 5 O'Clock And To The Little Jewish Cleaner 5 O'Clock Was 5 O'Clock. They Were All Standing Inside A Locked Door And I Was Trying With Him To Get Their Attention. No Deal. And He Was Leaving For NY That Night.
@@peterrothfuss6042He is perhaps referring to the album cover for ‘Out to Lunch’
Eric and Charles... Bending a knee before them...
Dolphy was and still remains real jazz prophet. So good musician and even more so good person.
Stellar
this is just so good
So good to see Charles happy
Wasn't always so
Beautiful movement colors and textures!!! Sublime.

This is so genius.
Dannie Richmond is a king
Thank you.😊 Despite the irritating advertisements interprutations.
Magic
エリック・ドリフィー!!!最高ですありがと!
WOW genious!
All of these are amazing. Thank you.
Is pretty good hey : -D
Can now see the detail in dolphys glasses and how weird and offbeat they look on him, this and other things are the benefit of this, thanks a lot, before is more like looking in, this makes things seem closer 2 the action so is great : -D
This is timeless and classic
Amazing footage!
Eric dolphy was the most overlooked genius in jazz history. A technically brilliant altoist, who in my opinion was the greatest on his instrument, don't get me wrong, bird was astonishing.he was an innovator on three instruments, and was the greatest flutist in jazz history, only James Spaulding comes close. His articulation on the bass clarinet is approached by no one. His gigs with the equally ill fated Booker little at the five spot are mind blowing to this day. His out to lunch session is one of the crowning jewels of the free jazz movement. He was only 36 when he passed, he left a void in jazz that was never filled.
Awesome!
TH-cam utterly disgusts me for putting COMMERCIALS in the middle of WORKS OF ART!!! STOP IT!
