Thanks for all your great videos regarding repairs to manufactured homes. Last week I closed on my first home... a double wide. It needs alot of work, most of which I will be attempting to do myself to keep cost down. I will be replacing a lot of bad floors, this vid is really going to help guide me through the process.

Thanks so much for taking the time to film this! I am a somewhat new owner of a handyman special mobile home. It has good bones, just needs some big and small fixes kinda thing. I recently was gifted a 1970's single wide mobile home that has several areas where the floor is too soft to step on. The two main areas are around the toilet in the bathroom which caused the toilet and flooring about a foot around it to be sunken down, and there is a 4 ft long soft spot in the kitchen where the previous owner literally stepped on a weak spot and her foot went through the subfloor up to her knee and I believe tore the black fabric material underneath. Would the material need to be repaired or replaced before I fix the subfloor? This is my first experience with a mobile home, so I have zero knowledge about how they're built or what materials are used. After watching over a dozen videos on mobile home repairs, your videos are HANDS DOWN the most helpful and informative. All the other videos left me with more questions than answers and made me feel like I'm in way over my head. But after watching your videos I honestly feel confident I will be able to fix the repairs the mobile home needs. Oh, one thing... The mobile home is in Arizona, and I took look underneath the mobile home it appears no one has been under there in decades. The entire area underneath is covered with poisonous spiders and bark scorpions. In the 20 seconds I looked I saw half a dozen brown recluse, more black widows than I cared to stay and count, scorpions crawling all over the ground, and as I scooting on my back out from underneath, a bark scorpion FELL ON MY FACE from the underbelly 🦂😳 which landed me in the ER after being stung 6 times.... So now I am deathly afraid of ever having to go back under there. Is it possible to redo the subfloor all from inside the house? And do you have any tips on how to kill a BUNCH of spiders underneath a mobile home? Lol. I've managed to eradicate most of the scorpions from the property, but I can't find anything that is effective on spiders. I imagine you must have come across a fair amount of creepy crawlys in all your years working on mobile homes, so I figured if anyone would know it would be you. 😁 Thank you for any advice you might have, and I am learning SO much from your videos! 💜👍🏻
They sell spray for spiders at lowes hardware. I would completely fumigate under there before you go under again. And I do all the floor work from above. I do not like going under mobile homes. Thank you for watching my videos. I’m glad they help you. You can also repair underbelly from above. If you remove the floor just do this. From above th-cam.com/video/hcGn47ACDx0/w-d-xo.html
That old gray water pipe is just an accident waiting to happen. It's not a matter of if it will burst it's a matter of when it will burst. I know mine came with that stuff first the fittings start breaking and soon after the pipe starts splitting. Best to replace it with PEX that stuff is awesome especially in cold weather it will stretch when it freezes and return to its original shape after it thaws. I really like the white flair-it fittings but now they're hard to get. Flair-It has others all of which are better than Sharkbite on Pex Sharkbite O rings tend to leak over time.
Never saw a mobile home with plywood under, o ly vapor barrier, i do have a question if its ok to use osb board since its cheaper than plywood and what thickness should i use for the floor?
No, I would not use a OSB board ever on the floor. If you use the material that I’m using in the videos that I use, you will never replace your floor again never ever.
The vents are very easy to replace, they're just aluminum bent into a rectangle. Brakes are ( or at least should be) very common. I usually just replace them cause they are so poorly made and installed from the factory. And for Pete's sake, get a toe kick saw, the 1 1/2" cut from the walls just looks bad. What is your input on installing wood-like plank porcelain tile floor in a mobile home? I can’t find any reputable information if it would be a long term successful installation or if I should steer clear from doing so.
The camera work with go-pro attached to his head made it EXTREMELY difficult to watch. That said, it was worth watching for the good techniques demonstrated. Just DON'T watch it if you have been drinking or have vertigo! Skip to Part 2 of this renovation. MUCH better camera work and narrative by a different guy in the same organization.
yes they can they get in from the taped area in the vent under the floor the vents for the heat a have tape on them i would pull up the floor vent covers and check them out. Make Sure they are all sealed
I see that you left the rotted floor under the wall. You cut it flush with the jig saw and added 2x4 so the new floor can be screwed down. I get all that. My question is.... you dont have to remove the rotted floor under the wall? We are safe to leave it there, just make it flush? So we dont need to scrape out the rotted wood under the wall and tuck the new floor under the wall? Correct?
If you can do it ok but if not just do what I do. Make sure to install the blocking like we do. If you do under the wall you will have to brace to whole roof and wall up on the inside. Like we did in this trailer. th-cam.com/video/a-tDntNhhJo/w-d-xo.html
This video surprised me. I need to redo a front room and the front bathroom in my mobile home. I just bought it a few months ago and the previous owners never cleaned or maintained the home, never adjusted it or anything... the bathroom has a bad soft spot that you can literally feel the studs on either side of it, the room has a bad spot right by the vent which is right in front of the door, that one is so bad that when I took 1 step on it I about fell through. I have zero knowledge of mobile homes, this is my first house and I figured it would make a nice learning experience. I can't help but notice the floor in this home featured in the video has another floor under the insulation, mine doesn't have that... is it supposed to? Like if I did fall through that soft spot I would be under the house and I don't know if that's right. I put plywood over it for safety as it's sagging and obviously super weak right now, but since I don't have a floor under my insulation do I need to install one first? It seems purposely built that way, without one, but it's scary to think it's only subfloor and some insulation between me and the ground under the home.
No there is not another floor under the floor it’s the underbelly of the mobile home. Do you have the floor insulation and then the underbelly that holds up the insulation not a second floor
@@Drewsroofingandhomerepair I dont have an underbelly on my home, am I supposed to? the previous owner told me very little about the home and i got it for 2k so i couldnt beat that when i was homeless lol. Im just wondering if im missing parts or if it was oddly made and if adding an underbelly like that could help
One of the things I don't miss about living in the south. 6:28 seconds into the video, I saw a giant palmetto bug crawl across the insulation of where the floor was ripped out. I don't miss those damned palmetto bugs for a minute. (Although, I'm up north now... and we have stink bugs that are equally as bad). Guess it's a trade-off.
The plywood is easy to figure out measure the room if it’s if the room is 10 x 12 that’s 120 ft.² you get 32 ft.² per sheet of plywood so four sheets of plywood should do A 10 x 12 room
Hey. Dude need expert advice asap if you dont mind. Im redoing a small room that has the heater that intrudes into the room with a corner about 33inches by 25inches. My problem is im working on floor but the corner portion is needing the joinst support but i cant physicaly reach the existing joist to add xtra support/joist to lay more flooring. Any tips or advice to avoid having to crawl underneath and avoid the headache of rolling in fiber glass and further unneccessary damage just to reach area of repair?
If I am going to replace the bathroom floor ( has bathtub, toilet, sink in vanity) and washer/dryer flooring (doubled), is it a good idea to pull all of the plumbing out or is it easier just to work around it? Doesn't look like it would be too big a deal to yank it out while the floor is being repaired. Thanks.
michael31952 When you do around a toilet flange with plywood you make the piece the size you need it and then you cut it right down the center where the flanges catch a little circle out putting in his two pieces make sure you do blocking first
My grandma needs this done in the room next to the bathroom and the bathroom. Could u give me an estimate on how much it cost to fix both rooms? They are both very small!! THANKS
Can you tell me where the houses I live in North Carolina and it’s hard to give an estimate without being able to actually see it. We are out of Southport North Carolina we could probably help you out on the floors if you’re not too far away from us. th-cam.com/play/PL8xp84iSvTA570yVi5b5MZAIrw5yNXkQT.html
We have a six year old mobile home. Bought brand new. Apparently our back door leaks and we had no clue and now we have to replace the floor by the back door.
That sucks. It’s not too bad replacing flooring a little elbow grease and some pain in the ass the thing about it is you shouldn’t of had to be replacing your floor already in a brand new mobile home. Sorry to hear that my brother
I attempted this on a mobile home and failed completely. All the old wood flooring was glued to the joists and it would have taken days to remove because the glue was stronger than the wood itself. So instead I cross lapped and glued a double layer of 1/2" plywood over the existing floor. Seems to work well and much less work.
Hi Drew. Is there a part 2? I'm having trouble getting my plywood sheets to level perfectly as we had to do a lot of blocking. We used levels but it is still a little uneven and wont be good when we lay tile.
Then don’t use tile use something else and or use floor leveler it’s a liquid it levels out the floor in areas that are dipped in Newport on and leave it at levels itself
I bought a brand new home and the manufacture has suggest something like this since no contractor is able to stop the bad floor squeaks. Only two rooms have carpet. So would this be a good idea to let them do this?

What does it cost these days to repair a subfloor? I need to do this, and I am worried I'm going to be taken for a ride. I don't dare do it myself, because my support system, my dad, has cancer and I don't want/ can't ask him to help.
I don't know how much of a chore it would be,but if I were you i would get rid of the particle board all together, that is the cheapest stuff around. If your putting in hardwood floors, your going to be using a floor nailer which means you want to nail into something solid. To me particle is board is like nailing into a piece of paper.
Make sure you check out my playlist and there is also another playlist I have on Mobile Home Floors. I think you sound like you are an amazing person. It always makes me happy to hear when a woman actually will get out there and work with her hands. I’ll be honest a lot of women do not like working with their hands when it comes to work like what you’re talking about. Mobile Home Floors are very difficult. @@Drewsroofingandhomerepair about how much should I pay to redo the flooring in one bedroom in a small single wide? It needs new subfloors and obviously flooring on top of that. I just want to make sure that I don't get ripped off and pay too much
This is the second video I've seen with these crappy particle board floors. I have never seen such material used in subfloors. Who on earth would think such material is a good idea for a subfloor? The stuff is basically glued together sawdust.
it's even cheaper than particle board, it's called wafer board 5/8, and it's all they use in any kind of mobile or manufactured home. get a little bit of water on it from a small drain leak and you have to tear up almost the whole floor, stuff basically melts.
Suezi Proctor I have lived in several mobile homes in my life and none had these kind of subfloors. I once spent a year in a 60s model mobile home that had plywood subfloors. The mobile homes these were installed in were probably the cheapest models around.
So I'm sure this might be a stupid question but did you know there were no wires in the middle of the floor because every mobile home doesn't have wires in the middle of the floor or because you knew that about this specific one?
Yes i did so sorry I have better videos I am learning Stay tuned you will see some good videos coming out from now on th-cam.com/video/RQ3OV8kH1Rg/w-d-xo.html
That was a roach...I hate the things. My mom had a mobile home and didn't have roaches or mice. Depends on the person and the up keep of the unit, don't ya think?
Those holes are not holes. They have been placed strategically in certain area for flow thru ventilation. They are merely ventilation assisted openings. ***************************************************************************** How to avoid these holes?? Do NOT buy a mobile home.
Yes that is true I will say on the newer anything from 2000 up are going with the better plywood on the floor and they’re not using the particleboard anymore
Yankees are funny when they see a roach. The very elite living in the South know roaches are somewhere hiding in their homes. That was small. Good Lord. Roaches are synonymous with the South. Just like Fire Ants in your yards and black viper snakes. I know. I lived in Bayou country and miss the beauty that came with this price tag.

You guys always do A Great job.... take care 🙂
yes they can they get in from the taped area in the vent under the floor the vents for the heat a have tape on them i would pull up the floor vent covers and check them out. Make Sure they are all sealed
@@Drewsroofingandhomerepair they are, thanks . I dislike mice... take care.
Like we did in this trailer. th-cam.com/video/a-tDntNhhJo/w-d-xo.html
thank this video was a big help nice work
Thank you I hope you’re still watching nine years later
Call me or send me pictures to this number. 910twonine417sixone
THANK YOU.
Thank you I have new videos since that video a lot better even than that one
One of the things I don't miss about living in the south. 6:28 seconds into the video, I saw a giant palmetto bug crawl across the insulation of where the floor was ripped out. I don't miss those damned palmetto bugs for a minute. (Although, I'm up north now... and we have stink bugs that are equally as bad). Guess it's a trade-off.
This will be a godod reference video take 📝

I am fixing to have to do my floor in the trailer I am moving into I need some help with a couple of things.
I wish I could help but I’m in Southeastern North Carolina
Roughly how many sheets of plywood,2x4’s and 2x6’s ?
I wish I would’ve seen this when you wrote it I could’ve helped
Thanks for the video I have the same problem it's a #@*! Crime they use practical board...good to see it replaced with plywood.

@@Drewsroofingandhomerepair thanks I will look ate the videos it will help me see what I'm dealing with
Thank you very much! You're a life saver!
thank you
If I am going to replace the bathroom floor ( has bathtub, toilet, sink in vanity) and washer/dryer flooring (doubled), is it a good idea to pull all of the plumbing out or is it easier just to work around it? Doesn't look like it would be too big a deal to yank it out while the floor is being repaired. Thanks.
michael31952 When you do around a toilet flange with plywood you make the piece the size you need it and then you cut it right down the center where the flanges catch a little circle out putting in his two pieces make sure you do blocking first
What thickness of plywood is good for flooring, on a mobile home?
23/32
Yes exactly it’s 3/4 of an inch basically
Says 23/32 on it it does not say 3/4
Seems to work well and much less work.
wow
UtwoBed if its wet or damaged it has to be taken out not glued over right?
Outstanding
Thank you so much I appreciate your kind words

The floors are vinyl floors.

Tab Ormiston yes
Yes insulation was next video

thanks info,video cool
You’re welcome I hope it helped My channel is still alive thanks to you over 23,000 subscribers
2x6 floor joists common in mobile homes? Seems like the max length they should stretch should be 8 or 9 feet
I agree no more then that
By time they sit on the frame rail the span isnt over 8 feet
True
Wouldn’t a kick plate saw get you closer to the wall ?
This is a wall cut saw
What does it cost these days to repair a subfloor? I need to do this, and I am worried I'm going to be taken for a ride. I don't dare do it myself, because my support system, my dad, has cancer and I don't want/ can't ask him to help.
This job will cost them 12,000. But it has been empty for yrs
I hope you are watching my new videos

This guy a bad ass
Thank you so much 😊
I don't know how much of a chore it would be,but if I were you i would get rid of the particle board all together, that is the cheapest stuff around. If your putting in hardwood floors, your going to be using a floor nailer which means you want to nail into something solid. To me particle is board is like nailing into a piece of paper.

Mine is rotten under the wall. Its stripped all through anyway but having to do a littke at a time
That’s the best way to little at a time
If the floor squeaks does that mean there water on the floor?
It might mean it’s dry
What do you mean it’s dry ? Why does it squeak and wha can one do?
Yeah put screws in it not nails
How do you remove the leftover wood on top of the toe nail at the end of the video??
You can use a saw Zaw or a chisel
10-4. Been using a chisel but it’s taking forever because it’s highly compacted 3/4” particle board. Gonna try the sawzall
Thanks man. Great video. Really appreciate you.
Yes take a saws all blade and cut the hell out of it it works best

Make sure you check out my playlist and there is also another playlist I have on Mobile Home Floors. I think you sound like you are an amazing person. It always makes me happy to hear when a woman actually will get out there and work with her hands. I’ll be honest a lot of women do not like working with their hands when it comes to work like what you’re talking about. Mobile Home Floors are very difficult. I’m impressed that you’re doing it yourself and I’m glad that my videos are helping. I hope you are a big-time subscriber and be looking for my channel updates I’m gonna try to start adding stories to my videos you have a great evening and thank you for watching.

sorry, I posted before I saw all the video about cleaning up the insulation
toe kick saw works better
Thank you I will try that
This is the second video I've seen with these crappy particle board floors.
Thank you for watching

So I'm sure this might be a stupid question but did you know there were no wires in the middle of the floor because every mobile home doesn't have wires in the middle of the floor or because you knew that about this specific one?
what purpose would putting wires in the floor serve?
none

not a roach at 6:28 but a mouse. Rats and mice are very common in manufactured/mobile homes. this is why im against them.
*****************************************************************************
How to avoid these holes??
Do NOT buy a mobile home.
Lol
This heavy breathing is hot😏😩
That video was about 5 or 6 years ago and thank God I quit smoking
10 years later mobile homes are still being made sh#tty.
No roaches are from being dirty I live in the south, always have and if I ever see a roach in my house I'm bombing it.
