I accidentally said American as I read the Thai PBS story first in which they erroneously state “American”, he was British not American - see paragraph 5 in link below. Though personally I may not fully agree these things were “stolen” the Thai press have reported it as such as they were taken from the country illegally and not for the villagers to sell, therefore we repeat their terminology.

I noticed that discrepancy in what you said as apposed to the title and the image of the guy at about one minute in. Glad you caught it but too bad it was after publishing.
A beautiful story, I wish all disputes could be settled this way. 🙏
I love Hugo's little "apology dance"!
Cheers brother, hope you are well in Pai!
@@lifeinruralthailand Smoky but good, Khap 🙏
Thai Culture is Amazing !
Beautiful People !
This is why I love Thailand and Buddhism - other religions/countries would say "oh, well, money is money" and forget about it , but this village came together to apologize for the wrong that was committed against their culture/heritage. I respect that greatly.
In the past we would often visit Colorado and have been to the museum in this video. I still remember seeing this artifact (and others) and telling my wife, that Thailand did not donate this stuff. Thanks for the update.
So fantastic to see the community, young and old enjoying themselves together 🙏🏽
These videos offer wonderful insights into rural Thailand. I'm really enjoying them, thanks for showing this side of life in the land of smiles.
Oh my how lovely.😅Hugo taking the stage😂
Great video Ryan & Mo! Thank goodness the villagers made the confession……this is historical for this village! Thanks for sharing:) Hugo is cuter than ever😊
Thank you Marietta- hope you are wel 🙏🙏

What a beautiful colourful celebration 🎉 it all looks so happy and I loved the dance very graceful
Hugo is so cute dancing with his little hands. Simply gorgeous. Cheers
I agree Stolen because all Buddhist statues, artefacts require export certification authorisation. I know I tried.
Great to see the happiness and celebrations❤🇹🇭🙏

Very interesting video👍 loved seeing Hugo stealing the show belting 😊❤️🏴x
My home away from home, this village. Recognized many people in the video
My wife and I have our names inscribed on a couple of artefacts buried under the shrine on the hill in our village. We helped raise some money for it so will be forever part of the foundations unless someone comes and digs us up !!!! It is quite amazing what they bury. I have seen large statues buried and never to be seen again.
thanks for creating and sharing
My pleasure!
It is agin a very good video telling about Thai culture!
Thanks for sharing it
Best wishes form
Udo 🙏🫶🙏
Extraordinary story. Excellent content👏👏👏❤️

Oooops😂😂😂😂😂 innocent Hugo is helping the family to apologize. This act by Hugo should exonerate your own family from whatever punishment .😂😂😂😂 I love Baby Hugo❤
That was very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you 🙏 and thanks for becoming a member - more to come 😁🇹🇭👍🙏
Thanks for this once in a lifetime vlog Ryan. Hopefully this ceremony will never be repeated in this village at least! The 1960s might seem a long time ago to you but for me it was my teenage and early adult years and does not seem long ago at all, certainly not history! I am always amazed how at Thai village festivals everyone thinks that they can dance, usually fuelled with alcohol. My daughter has spent 12 years studying Thai Dance at school and then 3 years at Kalasin College of Dramatic Arts and then 5 years at Mahasrakham University Faculty of Fine and Dramatic Arts. She has performed everything from Mowlem to Traditional Thai Dance including the Khon masked dance drama of the Thai epic Ramakien. It requires complete dedication and a high level of fitness plus the hand movements are so difficult that it requires a certain degree of double jointedness. Some tutors, I believe even break the wrists of young students to stretch the joints to enable better movement! I have had to endure every performance she has been in, which sometimes go on for 5 hours and I must admit that it all looks the same to me as with ballet I do not see the finer parts of this incredibly high level of dancing! I am such a Philistine! I loved the wat Hugo joined in and did incredibly well with his hand movements. One thing Ryan, I am not clear as to the significance of the pigs heads in the wonderfully laid out offerings. Thank you so much for sharing as always. God bless you and the family 😀❤🙏
Lovely video very interesting God bless you all always 🙏 ❤️
You too 🙏❤️
Thank you for sharing your wonderful video👍❤
Fascinating story and ceremony glad to see the statue is back where it belongs
Fascinating, thank you Damo & Ryan for sharing this and explaining because if not for you we would never get to see something like this. Loved Hugo’s little Thai dance as well😂
Amazing stories 👏
Glad you think so!
Nice one 👍🏻
A beautiful look at a village ceremony and well filmed.
That’s awesome, I saw the story behind this someplace else with the archaeologists verifying the story. So cool…happy Khmer New Year
Thanks for doing this video 🎉
What an awsome little story to round up my day! You may not have cinemas out there, but an event like this beats any "fast food culture" one with a huge margin! How fun to mingle with those lovely people, smiling, dancing and apolozising away! Dang! That family (or the whole village) apparently must have felt collectively like sh*te to filnally pull off a grand "sorry mate" like that a man age later... But there you have it - how can one not love the Isaan folks? Good on the purpotrating ones to mend things right. All god, all forgiven and happy days ever after! Cheers! Your lad, Hugo, is just so adorable, btw. Seems so happy and curious, witha huge apetite for life (Yes, and you too, Otis - in case someone would happen to read the comment to you!)!
You have a beautiful wife & family. I would like more stories on Thailand architecture & archaeology. - with D talking about the Thai culture.
I always love learning how different cultures do things..
great story and reporting ryan
1965 a British Farang Steals From Neighbouring Village In Rural Thailand 🙂
I am very happy to have a national treasure returned to my country. In fact, there are many more bears. In fact, there are many more bears that have not yet been found.
We hope all can be returned!
Brilliant ending ❤
Respect to that lady to apologise for her fathers mistake it must have been tough on her having to do that infront of all those villagers
The documentary that was made about Douglas Latchford is a good watch. The amount of items that were looted by him and the gangs he employed is incredible. How he exploited the Cambodian people and for the items to go on display in big museums. Not only in museums but wealthy people having the stolen items as furniture / art works in their homes.
Well worth a watch.
Very Nice. I am interested in Buddhist influences from the Bharat (Indian) civilization, but I also find the Brahman influences interesting as well. At one point Dammo used the word "prasad" in referring to the building foundation, but my knowledge of the work is that it refers to food and other items that are offered to the Gods. Is the same word used in a different context in Thailand? The rice being cleaned on the former temples foundation is also an interesting aside in that it kind of becomes prasad as well.
I would advise using a ground x ray reader before just digging up random sites. It will help a lot especially your muscles in thai heat.
Hugo "The Destroyer" 😂😂
Was that Jayavarman 6 you were saying? Jayavarman 7 built a lot of the largest temples in the Angkor complex
Very interesting. Wow, they certainly came out in numbers for this. It must of been a huge thing fir that area. Nice to see it being recognised, and the family concerned, apologising.
Very nice
So a bit like Ong Bak without the martial arts.....great that these precious cultural artifacts are returned to Isaan.
Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone?
They paved paradise to put up a parking lot.
Good to see things can be adjusted if you really want to❤
❤❤❤
Hugo will become a musician or a dancer, pretty sure of that ;-)
😊❤❤❤❤❤
Was there the big 'Reveal' of Golden Boy? Where will he reside?
they sure do like a party over there
That is what is missing in the West today.A little bit of humility and being able to say sorry.
In Indonesia, only Bali Island.many places in Thailand.
Your explanation, remind me of belief Brahms,thanks..
Interesting !
Glad you think so!
I am not much for rituals and ceremonies so have stopped going to these things for the most part. My wife sometimes helps get the village ladies ready for these dances and if she has time may join them in the performance but all the village celebrations take up so much time. I don't know how they ever get anything else done. I guess in the old days it made sense when you had a lot of down time between planting and harvest. There wasn't any transportation back then so you couldn't go anywhere else, either.
The golden boy is the Khmer empire king which now belongs to Thailand because Thailand Annexed Cambodia territories. Jayavaraman 6 is the powerful Khmer king who once ruled today Thailand. Thank you to Khmer people there for preserving their culture.
So, he paid the workers to dig around, he paid the owners of the land to buy it from them and they agreed and he took it out of the coutry legally.... sooo he did not steal it, right? 😂
I did say this to my wife but she and the press maintain that the word stolen was appropriate as it was taken without official permissions from the country 🙏
TO: YOU
The Happy Obedient. NOW: Re-newing,re-storing,
re-conciliation..
and the re-generation of The Mind, in Re-turning❤
God's Will be done.
So happy all is satisfactory.
We love YOU..Thailand😊
cool story 👍i have seen a recent documentary about that english dude and the thefts, they have managed to get a lot back to Cambodia
Yes much has been returned 🙏🙏
In Singapore, the statues that I love was Four-faced Buddha (Chinese Race) and St Joseph (Christian Race). This 2 statues also made senses for me to pray for any important situations by my family informations including others. That's why I'm getting more praying in 22 times in the Church company on Friday two weeks each month in a year and frequently went to Buddhist temple for praying my parents families members who has passed away, letting to stay long years with no arguments in my own quotes which is also from the Church company too. I've been done since 20 years ago while I'm young on weekends with my mom's whole family members on our weekend greeting periods.
He didn't steal it if he bought it for 1 million bath .... Or m I missing something?
I agree to be honest - however it was an illegal deal because it was a national treasure not for the village to sell and it was smuggled out of the country - so the way it was described to me was it was stolen from Thailand along with many other artifacts 🙏
Interesting episode and story, whether American or British I suspect he was a profit seeker back in the 60's ...Of course all people like/need/want money. My first thought was to dig more in the same area and you confirmed they are planning on that! 555 May become the richest village in Buriram soon! Enough incense burning to push up the PM 2.5 ! HAha Great to see the dancing and fun times they are all having during this celebration. Thanks guys. Peace and Love Y'all
I knew a Frenchman who twenty years ago bought in Thailand relics of Buddha from villagers/ monks and resold them in Asian countries like Singapore and Japan to collectors/ traders
He only bought items freely sold and theirs to sell
I believe to this day he is still doing it’s someone said - and has made a good living -
Though my view is Thais should perhaps think twice of letting go their religious art
Amazing Thailand ......
.
creative good end scene
How could something like a statue get through customs and out of the country. Kinda hard to steal it when it was paid for.
In pinned comment 🙏
Ryan, One of the worse things that you can do in our village is to steal. A thief is labeled for life. It brings shame to you and your family.
Everyone waiting for the Lao Khao to appear.
Baby Hugo has dirty blonde with dark eyes😮 interesting combo😊
th-cam.com/video/f1DFOGHHcm4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=087KerqqjJblrohP
A great story by 60 minutes about all of this. Awesome footage Ryan we always appreciate it.
He paid for it, so it not really stolen
Britain has a lot to answer for all over the world
Were the family ostracised for selling it ? seems like the wealth was shared with the 3 day party
No I don’t think so 🙏
Did the family pay for this party? 😊 is this every year?
Brilliant ending ❤
