The 40’ lift at Lock 17 was a world’s record in 1918 when this third incarnation of the canal opened. You also just passed the historic General Nicholas Herkimer home about a half mile prior to the lock. A Quiet Place was filmed in Little Falls.
Awww thank you so much for saying that! You MADE MY DAY!!! I was worried I was a bit too enthusiastic in this episode and would get the grumpy pants making comments about it. I am so glad our video found you and other fellow optimists who work to find the joy in life :). Happy to have you here!
Best video yet! The time lapse shots were great, the Belle Cam was adorable, Rex saves the day, and the trucks honking was just as entertaining to watch and experience as I’m sure it was for you all at the time too; so much fun! Looking forward to the next video! Shine on ya’ll!
LOL We are so glad you got a laugh out of that. We certainly did too! And Mark needs to work on his French for sure. His German is solid, but French not so much.
@@RyanKelley-s1f That boat was a limited production Outer Reef Neptune Series. Very cool feature but they still needed to use some wood blocking when lowering as well as removing fiberglass panels. Interestingly that boat is a pod drive. ⚓️Mark
Absolutely loved this! Yet another chance to cruise vicariously - with such a great “you are there” sense of what it’s really like to go through a day of locking. (We don’t have locks anywhere near where we boat in Northern Michigan, so it’s fun being able to do them without getting my fenders dirty 😊). Too bad you didn’t have a drag net attached to your boat to retrieve junk from the water - you could get credit for picking up MANY pieces of trash all in one fell swoop, or swell foop. 😂 Thanks for another entertaining episode.
Oh don't you worry! We picked up a ton of trash, but I LOVE your idea of a drag net to catch trash as we go. Thanks for watching and for such a sweet comment.
Thanks so much for sharing your amazing adventures. Each post gets better as you and the fam grow into seasoned seaward professionals! It would’ve been great to have video footage of the stoned felines. 😂 Shine On!✌️
LOL I SO WISH I had footage of the stoned felines. At the time I was just so sleepy and so confused. But we were all highly amused once we found out the cause of their midnight charades. Thanks so much for watching and cheering us on :)
It was a great stop for sure! We got our bow thruster fixed a few episodes back when we were in the Chesapeake. Our stern thruster is still not working but we don't use it much.
I would have loved to hear the CB chatter for that. Would be even cooler if they'd gone out to eat wherever they stop for the night and had overheard a couple truckers talking about "that silly boat on the canal". LOL
@@TheBoomershines Too bad you didn't have a CB on the boat. You could have not only heard their commentary, you could have joined in w/o letting on that you WERE the boat in question. [grins evilly]
Glad for the long videos. I'd watch it straight through if it was an hour or more. Had to pause tonight because wife got home late (Incase your metrics showed I paused for over an hour) and ate dinner w her sat on our rental back patio w new fire pit for a while. Helene put a tree through our roof and it didn't stop until it hit the window headers. Hope Atlanta faired better than Augusta. I'm about 20 miles west of there
@@TheBoomershines Most of the damage was west of Madison. Went there (an hour drive) for gas for my generator. Other stations were opened closer, but hour wait in line.
Any fees for using the locks. I have only been through one lock twice, so you are now infinitely more experienced than me. It was the graduation trip for a local Coast Guard auxiliary boat course. Enjoyed today’s episode.
The Erie Canal does not charge for passing through the locks, but other places you do have to pay, such as the Welland Canal, which connects Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
Binoculars work better when adjusted to your eyes without glasses on. But that requires people who wear glasses to have their own pair that no one else uses. Now that I have made that switch I dont want to go back to using them with glasses on. Another option is scopes. Scopes are better for when wearing glasses as they are built to have distance from your face. I have been looking at some of the digital scopes with a night vison function and a record function. Still not cheap but in the price range of action cameras. Night vision is useful on the water. Or so I tell myself as an excuse to buy a new toy.
if you’re going to a lock as the first boat while the lock is low, you go under the bridge when the water raises up you’re already passed the low bridge. So that could be an option if he has your buddy boats to let you go in first.
Great question! We found it easier to manage locks with him at the lower helm. We mostly used a midship line in the locks so he could assist from the helm if we were on a starboard side tie. On days when we had to go through lots of locks, he typically stayed at the lower helm all day.
The rig honking brought back so many childhood memories

Great to see your adventures. What kind of boat has the bridge top that lowers. Very interested in a boat like that.

Another great day! It sounds like you've resolved one or both of your thrusters. Little Falls NY looks like a nice and relaxing stop.
It was a great stop for sure! We got our bow thruster fixed a few episodes back when we were in the Chesapeake. Our stern thruster is still not working but we don't use it much.
@@TheBoomershines It was the stern thruster I was thinking of.
Oh my goodness I so enjoyed the trucks beeping! I did that as a kids. I bet the truckers were on their CB letting everyone know

When Mark was explaining "sync" I could hear Jimmy Buffett's ""Come Monday" in the background - Very Cool!
We love Jimmy Buffett! Cinda actually ran into him on the loop. Stay tuned for that episode.
Nice scenery. Love the small towns. Gives a different picture of New York.
It sure does! New York is a beautiful state.
Getting the truckers to honk was awesome!
We had a blast doing it! It was a great way to bring laugher into our day. Hopefully the truckers got a laugh too!

YIKES! That sounds terrifying. So glad you are OK and that we can provide some distraction. We did ok with Helene. Just lots of rain.

That McDonalds should have a "drive through" dock on the canal. =)
Rex had the EXACT same thought! LOL
Great video, thank you.😊
Thank YOU for watching :)
Now there's a bunch of free spirits!😅

I usually take my glasses off to use the binoculars but couldn't take my glasses off, use the binoculars and film all at the same time LOL.
Your mobile fender is usually called a walking fender.
Well that makes sense! Thanks for sharing.
Little Falls has a 40 foot + range on it. We went down, express!
It is quite a ride for sure! I bet going down is an adventure.

Just curious as to why Mark was inside the boat instead of on the flybridge? Love following you all.
