    I agree, copying is a great way to learn. By (privately) copying you can equip yourself with a whole new set of tools and skills that you can then use to create your own material.

    I've owned a gorilla pod for 2 and a half years. Every time someone sees me with it in public, they go "You're just trying to be Casey Neistat." I usually just shrug, and go sure ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ -- Gotta pick your battles in my opinion. Getting annoyed with being compared to famous youtubers is not one of the battles I am going to fight.

    As even Casey says, copy what you want but without a story it ain't worth nothing. Your videos are always to a point and full of content. Keep those coming and show us what you learn from others at the same time. We are all looking for inspiration to improve ourselves. That's life

    Casey definitely was not the first to use many of the techniques he uses. No one will ever be 100% original. Taking all of the influences you have, and combining them into one is what creates a style, everyone's style is different, at least it should be.
    I love that you used the new intro and tried something that is new for you.

    Remember one person doesnt own the tipping things onto a table and assemble something, artistic style's crossover everywhere, people themselves are making the connection and not considering whether the artist is inspired by other things. I personally have been called out in the gear I use and my own editing techniques. if someone sees me use a gorillapod they think oh he's copied Casey Neistat rather than oh its just a gorrilapod. I edit to sound very frequently and has been and extremely useful tool when I use it. To have someone speak about work I have done saying "oh your copying casey neistat, he edits to sound" is so hurtful and frustrating to me as an artist, especially since I have watched his videos for a tiny percentage of my time in filmaking. People have to remember painters and artists can use the same paints, brushes and canvas but its what they make is what matters

    I have a ton of respect for your work and Casey's. Even Casey says he pulls inspiration from other filmmakers as well. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. When we play sports growing up, we mimic batting, or shooting styles from great athletes as well. No one complains about that. I completely agree that it is the best way to learn and find our own style. Keep up the great work.

    There was a time that vlogs on TH-cam has no filmmaking at all. Casey Neistat as a filmmaker brought it to TH-cam. Viewers label everything related to filmmaking as "copy". I see it all as like painting. There are many styles and inspirations to follow but each painting is unique. I learned so much with Caisey Neistat and got so much inspired with him as well he did with Kubrick and other famous directors, but I improved what he does and added with my own style as well as my signature shots. You have improved so much and see those changes in a very positive way!!

    it's always tough when it comes to trying new things. on the positive side is with TH-cam, you get instant feedback if you are developing your own voice or even a new one. so if something's not working or is not unique enough you can always adjust.
    What I tell people, which I think is inline with what you are saying, don't steal/copy but be inspired by them. (I think privately copying us brilliant when it comes to learning)
    Good video.

    Everything is an adaptation of something we've seen. No one owns the right to stop frame animation or writing with a marker on camera. It's funny how viewer see something for the first time and they believe the author pulled the idea from thin air rather than from being inspired by another artist.

      True. I assumed that Brandon Li was a trailblazer until I saw Watchtower of Turkey, which in turn utilises (albeit at great place) techniques that have been around since before Hitchcock.

    So no one can ever shoot a video from overhead? I'm a big fan of Casey's but c'mon. As a matter of fact I think I've watched a few videos where the camera is directly in front of the person at eye level, can we not do that anymore either ?

  • @Democratese
    @Democratese 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As Im thinking the term I look over to the sidebar and see the video Im about to reference. Everything is a remix. Its absolutely true. Before the Ted talk video I realized this when I was in at the Louvre and saw an exhibit about Santa Ana, just looking at the process Davinci had to undertake to get the painting he wanted and where he pulled different ideas from just smacks you in the face that no one is original, yet everyone is.
    Definitely true that combining is key. We wouldnt have the Mona Lisa if Davinci never did the perspective he had done in his other paintings.
    Kubrick as much as Ive seen his films I always pull something new from them, Aronofsky as well. I could and proababy did watch "Requiem for a Dream" a hundred times because I was so taken by the way he shot that.
    Great video, good work.

    I've got a question, this might be stupid, but what's the difference between a time-lapse and sped-up video?

    • @SauloASFS
      @SauloASFS 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Binge Watchers Time-lapses would be a bunch of separate photos that can be taken with bigger intervals (1 sec in between photos or even 10 mins between photos, for example), the sped up video is just a normal video you're recording, so they end up looking different.

    • @BingeWatchers
      @BingeWatchers 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I thought time lapses really are just sped up videos. Incidentally, I thought that because of Casey Neistat :)

  • @Terranscapes
    @Terranscapes 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice over view. Couldn't agree more with your 4 points.
    I found your comment on time-lapse vs speed up to be interesting. I've been considering doing time-lapse for some things, and I think sticking with sped up does make more sense. But if the footage is going to be really long, perhaps some time lapse could work; I'm thinking of showing several hours of work. However, it couldn't have taken a short amount of time to make that (crazy) guitar, so it gives me more to think about. And having the sound go with it is a nice aspect.
    So, went out and looked at a few Neistat videos. I certainly see the comparison, but neither of you have broken the mold on intros. :) I've always been one to go out, see what is working for others, and bring those ideas into my own work. After years of videos, I've finally started to change the font, size, and color of my text overlays in my thumbnails. What works, works. And I see your flair in your intros that gives it a Caleb flavor. (The knife 'stand' was fun.)
    As for who I look to for inspiration, you're one of them. :) I keep looking at your 'two camera' head shots and think about my own videos. No 4k camera for me, so cropping in isn't an option, but a second camera is. It makes me want to revisit it again; I was giving it a go for a few videos but with different angles. Straight on works better, so I'll be 'copying' you likely. *grin*
    And does anyone realize the work it takes to make those intros?!? A lot of editing and set up for a minute of footage. That's inspiration all on it's own.

    ugh boy do I hate Casey Neistat in general. He calls every blog he makes ''movies''. How much do you have to love yourself to think what he does is equal in quality to a movie. He basically just puts a Timelapse here and there.
    Sure, it's better than what 90% of TH-camrs do but he's still using clickbait titles and other tricks to pass generic content.

    • @JasonBowdach
      @JasonBowdach 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Uniden it is quite a reach to call a vlog filmmaking, they're extensions of social media and almost close to self-published diaries, as opposed to public displays of storytelling. Where is the film? Characters?

    • @arambaali
      @arambaali 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Uniden Let's not forget about product placement and then denying it.

    • @AlecOGrady
      @AlecOGrady 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Uniden The definition of a movie: a story or event recorded by a camera as a set of moving images. He calls them movies because that's what they are. They're not features or even shorts, but they are a kind of movie. They are daily 7 minute movies, telling a story of his life, business and adventures. The beauty of TH-cam is the ability to let others communicate their message, and this so happens to be what he chose to communicate. I just wanted to clear that up for you. You can choose to hate him or not, but he is a filmmaker. :)

    • @JasonBowdach
      @JasonBowdach 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Film by definition is capturing of a story or event. He makes videos, not films. HUGE difference. If he were a filmmaker, then everyone who purchased an iphone and took cat "videos" are legitimate filmmakers. I hesitate to provide that much credit

    Ha, I recently got accused of 'stealing' someones idea - it didn't matter that my work predated the accusers by 4 years - I apparently stole their idea before they had it! Turns out the accuser was following me on Vimeo and didn't understand I use a different username on TH-cam, also didn't understand I had also rehashed the same idea 2 years later with a TV commercial that aired in their area - but you know, I'm still a thief, accusations alone make it reality!

  • @BrettMartin84
    @BrettMartin84 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've got to say, I've been watching Casey for years and thats the first thing I thought of when I saw a few of your newer videos, however Casey did not invent/create that style either he is just well known for using it by many people who are on youtube. This kind of thing was super popular in the late 80's early 90's as most people who wanted to create content did not have a "title maker" or an editing board. And surprise, Casey has been making videos this way since around that time. Most people have moved on to digital effects and more "modern" styles so anyone seeing this style from Casey for the first time might think the style is his alone. Everything is a remix. th-cam.com/video/coGpmA4saEk/w-d-xo.html

    I want to write comics as a living one day. Most of my characters are based off of characters I liked, I'm not drawing from one source. I'm just worried about them looking too much like a rip-off.

  • @nanaouzumaki6044

    I hate how people thinks copying is completely fine, inspiration is different from copying. By copying I mean, the teacher gives you "tree", you two try to write an essay of tree. Tree is inspiration and if the other guy copies what I am writing, where he could have created his own essay, it's just rude and stealing.

  • @EvansBackpackingVideos
    @EvansBackpackingVideos 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good video but "steal," "copy," "adapt" all are very general terms that without further definition are just buckets that hold whatever a person wants to put in them. It's even more complicated when the topic is art -- and what's "art" in the first place. But kudos to you for identifying some of your influences. Meanwhile, Casey Neistat himself has obviously been influenced by other filmmakers, as he often admits. I suppose people will always have fun tracing the influences in artistic works--it's been going on forever and is a chief occupation, obviously, of critics--but lately there's been a move to cry plagiarism (or "stealing") without much thinking or explanation. I think Neistat might have started it himself by calling out people on TH-cam who were "ripping him off" without stating specifically who he was talking about, except to say he's more concerned with channels that have millions of followers. (So I know he wasn't talking about me!) Anyway, way to get everyone thinking ....

    The funny thing is that a lot of people think Neistat invented jump cuts, timelapses and these sorts of things that have existed for decades and to my taste, have been used in much better ways than what he does. He also has 0 care for his gear, you can't say he really frames anything in a really innovative way and that he cares about shot stability (rarely see nicely executed pans with a tripod), his audio isn't all that great and he misses his cuts quite often. I understand he mainly vlogs and that in some ways it's his style and personnality, but to say that you are inspired or copying him would also get me pissed off, I would want to punch the person that states this really really hard.
    His storytelling and the amount of video he produces is what makes his videos worth watching but his actual filming/editing skills are far from impressive.
