The fact he worked so quickly and in a flow state I think is one reason the old New York writers might have found it easy to except him as writers tend to work the same way and the simple style of art and fact it was on empty poster spaces in the subway definitely helped
Thank you, In Melbourne we have a cherished mural by Keith, I think there's a doco about his time in Melbourne. Original Keith's appeared on public and private property all over Collingwood.
There is an amazing metalwork Haring piece (considered to be his last I think) inside St John the Divine in Manhattan where they had his funeral service mentioned in this video. I highly recommend going to see it! There are written statements from him there too about the nature and acceptance of death that are very moving
i absolutely love your analysis on these artists, you walk the line so well on objective breakdown and expressing the human narrative of their daily lives, thanks so much please keep going! also do you have an instagram for the channel?
Any teen starting out their fordt time with weed, take just 2 hits yes you heard me right its the sam as someone who never drinks to take 3 shots of vodka and start acting crazy lol im new to your channel and a small artist whos getting into painting but mostly all pencil drawings is sspecialty which painting has led me to you, thank you for this art history your channel is only going to grow and grow i can see it
Im! thinking, either the mother was ashamed of Keith being gay and HIV+ as a lot of people felt negative about that during the 80's and 90's. But I would think by today it would be open, if he had a kid. So I would think a miscarriage or abortion ensued. And while, I love Keith, living without a dad would have been a real bad deal, so I think its better if the kid did not arrive to a recently abandoned mom and missing dad.
with the correct treatment people with HIV can live normal lifespans, in case you didn't know. as well as the probability of reaching undetectable amounts of the virus. aware antivirals aren't really drugs in the way you meant it in the title but thought I'd say. why did you decide to do this series? is it explained in one of the other videos? (assuming art under the influence is a series! lol)
Yes! Thank goodness for advancements in medicine! And yes it’s a series. Simply because I thought people’s relationships with drugs are interesting to how they live their lives, so I decided to look into artists specifically.
@@arthistorystorytimewas just wondering why you have so few subs. Just discovered your channel today - Picasso, and, by the looks of it been at it quite consistently for a bit… oh well. Anyway, all the best and stuff.
White news told thier way.. no mention of the young puerto rican kid from the lower east side NY that he collaborated with and who actually taught him how to create the art he is famous for! ANGEL ORTIZ LA2 ...this man was paid by him until harings death then shunned...
I've owned plenty of books on Haring & the artist was a workaholic & was fueled by meth/speed. I recall the story of Haring using when he made the anti-drug art & when he made huge panels for a museum exhibit which he made on location. the only truly sober person was warhol & the warhol diaires reports the news as well.
Great piece. A correction though, Cannabis can be addictive and is a depressant that has often been categorized as a barbiturate, though there's debate on its categorization due to its hallucinogenic property.
Yes, you’re right it totally is in the depressant category and can be addictive for some. Although the addiction is more so an emotional addiction in a similar way social media, shopping, porn, food, etc is to some people. Rather than a physical addiction such as cocaine or nicotine. And for sure! It’s somewhat/slightly hallucinogenic. Particularly when ingesting rather than smoked. Thanks for commenting!
As far as I know it's not classified as a stimulant or depressant as it can do both. Dizziness, drowsiness, or lightheadedness isn't really "hallucinogenic" either, which is what it is classified as since it doesn't fit anywhere else. THC acts more like a stimulant. CBN is one of the sedative components of cannabis. CBD is like fish oil and has omega 6 and 9, not just omega 3, along with no fish taste. Good for the body. I'd say people should be more concerned with antidepressants that have black box warnings on them. Or drugs like Effexor that can cause brain zaps. Even Tylenol/acetaminophen is a leading cause of liver damage in the US. They're now finding cannabis is neuroprotective, unlike alcohol which kills brain cells. It even takes All the deaths of opiates combined to equal the deaths of alcohol. No are no recorded deaths as a direct cause from cannabis after thousands of years of use. More people have died from water. Cannabis is a drug yes. But it is of the least concern in the world of drugs, legal or otherwise. Literally towards the bottom of the list. "If people let the government decide what foods they eat and what medicines they take, their bodies will soon be in as sorry a state as are the souls of those who live under tyranny." - Thomas Jefferson
As a fellow artist I am so glad. that channels like this exist. Keep up the great work.
Just caught the Haring show twice while it was here in Toronto, big well executed pieces and some sculptures, very impressive.
Keith Haring is one of my favorite artists. Thanks for you for made this video.

Art and hard drugs go together like me, hard drugs and art.
I love Keith Haring. I relate so much to his childhood upbringing. Plus also his message.
This is really cool. Thanks for putting in the time to make this!

The crack is wack mural in the hardboard court in Harlem was actually painter by him and LA2 Angel Ortiz.
I would see similar or copycat style artwork in New Zealand as a child - I used to think it was just an 80s thing
Thanks for these documentaries. I've always been curious about the relationship between art and drugs. Cheers. Keep it up.
It’s like water and wine
My first time hearing he had a kid!😮
@@raulguadalupe3489 possibly just a fetus. No idea or info out there that I could find on if the baby was actually born.

Not so sure that he escaped addiction….as sex very much appeared to be his escape
I can remember seeing his drawings in subway stations in chalk on those empty black ads. I wonder what happened to them?
Reading is pronounced like Redding.
Ooo! thank you I appreciate that!
@@arthistorystorytime you are most welcome.
I caught that immediately like where? She's not from around the tri-state area lol.
Wow..... the Mud Club.. doesnt sound like a club you would ever want to order food from....

It’s said like “Redding”, not “reading”, PA

Bravo Keith Haring! I know so much more about his journey as an artist now. Thankyou for the film 🙂

2:00 you can read the biography RADIANT, Brad Gooch.
You can write comments, AMAZING.
Lucky for him galleries push fast art. So they can get that money quick.
And Anti nuke campaigning

I had no idea Woody Allen was so artistic.
Keith did not have a kid.
Keith Haring was too young to be a hippie.
For sure! Not a “real” hippie. But even today there are hippie variants lol newer editions and flavors of modern hippie types.
What? There were Plenty of hippies in the 90s.

You are wrong. It definitely is not a depressant, ask a Dr. There are several varieties.
The drugs he really needed was some Prep
you look like Frida Kahlo
Yeah totally overrated. Modern art is stupid.
