    Looks like the gilt's come off. Not surprising.
    Curious about the clock. Fred surveyed it and found the frame was about ready to come down. Did he fix it up, it was that a more routine masonry job?

      Indeed @wishfix, sadly we won't see working class men like him again. Many have tried to hail Guy Martin as the new Fred Dibnah and whilst I'm sure he's good at what he does he isn't in the same league as Fred.

      I briefly met him myself back in 1992 when I was a Bricklayers Apprentice working on a job at Trencherfield Mill in Wigan Tech Mailbox. He was a nice down to earth bloke with no heirs or graces and what you saw you got with him.

  • @died4us590

    Fred was a character, and he was saying how bad the iron rings around the clock faces were. When he kept hitting his boot on the ring, you could see it was loose and a bit sketchy. Fred was a hard working man in a field that has few men left who know how to do it. They have started an apprentice type steeple jack class, so that there will be guy's who can do it.

    1:15 Mr H- I know you only from Fred Dibnah. Not sure if be aware of you, or your distinguished production company (Mrs H?) were it not for the Fred thread I followed.
    I understand Philomena Cunk is from your neck of the woods. I think you need to tie these Bolton personalities together somehow.

    Fred Dibnah was the real deal an old fashion steeplejack who did everything by the Victorian book, but he was also about preserving the past of the industrial revolution and steam in general, I only wish I met the man himself I was only 11 years old when he passed away in 2004. I visited his home back in April with my Dad and bought a spanner he use to own and a signed DVD by Alf Molyneux who was best friends with Fred, the headgear that was part of his mineshaft in his backyard is now owned by the Lancashire Mining Museum and they plan to restore it in honour of his memory. It's a massive shame the heritage centre has closed due to lack of funding and there's been no help from Bolton Council or the National Trust. Everything that was there has been auctioned off and as for the house, I think it will just become a residential dwelling.

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Wulfgar, I was fortunate enough to meet Fred Dibnah albeit very briefly back in 1992 when I was working as a Bricklayers Apprentice on a job at Trencherfield Mill in Wigan. As you say he was the real deal and what you saw you got with Fred as he wasn't the type of man to put on heirs and graces. It is a shame that Bolton Council didn't show more interest in Fred's home when it became a Heritage Centre or help to try and keep it open when it was announced that it would close. Hopefully whoever buys the house in the future will keep some of the unique features added by Fred down the years such as the water feature in the middle of the garden built from part of the nearby Swan Lane Spinning Mill chimney so that his legacy will live on in some way.

    • @wulfgar6749
      @wulfgar6749 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've always wondered if Fred Dibnah ever met the Reverend Wilbert Awdry author of The Railway Series and creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, it got me thinking because Fred use to do a lot of repair jobs on churches.

    What a character, a true National Treasure. R.I.P.

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aye, he was a character for sure Northern Monkey, very much 'old school' which endeared him to millions. Sadly though his time had come and gone and I think he knew it. If you ever get the chance to see him fell his last chimney he looked thoroughly miserable having to wear a yellow high viz vest and looked like he just wanted to get the job done as he probably couldn't be bothered with all the mither that came with modern day 'Elf 'N' Safety'.

    I'm still baffled as to how he actually managed to ladder that overhang high up on that India mill chimney at Darwin on his own ?

    • @MrHsHotPot
      @MrHsHotPot  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Probably a trade secret Black adder, although some of them overhangs on India Mill chimney jut out 5 feet so it must have presented him with a real challenge on how to get up there to the top. Brave man and massive respect to him for even climbing it in the first place never mind laddering it up on his own!
