  • In this second yarn review episode, I am sharing my thoughts on Tides from Holst Garn! For the #LevelUpIn2021KAL, I just knit the Vold Hat by Jean-Philippe Cliche in Tides, and I really enjoyed the yarn. Your review of this yarn was excellent. You made very clear everything a knitter wants to know. It’s like you made a purposeful and well thought out outline and filled in all the information - this sort of template could be used over and over. Please do! 👍🏽

      Thank you so much! That is a lovely comment and it is so appreciated. I am definitely planning to add in more review content as I try some yarns I've been excited about knitting with :-)

    I've used Tides, Supersoft, Coast, and Noble and love all of them. My unblocked and blocked gauges were more similar when I washed the yarn beforehand, and washing really softened up the Supersoft. I think Tides, Coast, and Noble are very soft and easy to work with without washing beforehand as well.

    Thank you for this wonderful review, Caleb! I'm just about to start a sweater with Supersoft, it will be my first experience with Hols Garn. Looking forward to it! I had the same problem with choosing the colors, oh my, the palette is incredible.
    Love your hat, it is gorgeous!

    Hello 👋🏽! Your hat is lovely! You create such well done pieces - and it’s nice to hear you speak of The Yarnery. I started ordering from them after visiting my sister in St. Paul, she took me there last summer and I loved it. Ive ordered Holst Garn Noble, along with other yarns, and I’m crocheting a lace patterned scarf - the stitch definition is 🤩 I’m really happy with it! Thanks for the great podcast.

    Thank you for sharing. I bought a cone of Tides in a medium gray Heather, along with 1 of Supersoft, and 2 of the Coast, all directly from Holst Garn in Denmark this fall. Just haven't tried them yet, but now I am encouraged. I found the shipping cost still made the cones a great price point, and I was shocked how fast they arrived (8 days!). I didn't know about the Yarnery, but when I looked yesterday, my browser indicates it's not a secured website (?).

    • @DrowninginYarn
      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cones really are a great deal! Especially if you don’t want to buy as much, shopping at the yarnery is also a great deal! I have never had an issue with their website and I’ve ordered from them a number of times! The correct address is www.yarnery.com. Did you go there or did you maybe add “the” in front of the address? I’ve done that before on accident and it’s not their website.

    I am in a bit of a yarn slump.... hope to get out of it soon. I need to cast a hat on and level-up my skills lol. Thanks for this Podcast. Love your new haircut!

    Love your hat! I’m eventually casting on a Musselburgh hat by Ysolda Teague. I’ve never knit a hat top down ,and I’m intrigued by the construction.

      I knit my first one recently, and I thought I wasn't going to like it. Honestly, though, I really did! It was easy to see if it was going to be long enough! I'll be excited to hear what your thoughts are!

    Love this yarn and the Yarnery. I'm currently making two different bowls with this yarn.

    I'm joining in the knit along, and I very confidently planned to learn two new skills in this time frame since hats are fast for me. Silly me. 😂I decided to start with double knitting and make the chrysanthemum hat, and I'm starting to suspect that it is going to take the whole six weeks. I'm really gonna love my end result though. 😍Thanks for encouraging us to push our comfort zones!

    • @DrowninginYarn
      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about doing double knitting as well, but the time it takes has deterred me. Haha. I’m glad you didn’t let it stop you! I can’t wait to see your hat!

    I've been thinking about buying some Holst Garn...and I plan to WASH the yarn before I work with it. Then it will be softer and nicer to knit with. ;-)

    I really enjoy these kinds of reviews, so thanks for that :) I ordered some SuperSoft and Noble to try last year, which are now going combined with silk mohair in a Hiberknitting Hat. So how has intarsia treated you? - not too bad for an experienced knitter?

    • @DrowninginYarn
      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that sounds like it will be a super nice, cozy hat! Intarsia was honestly much easier than I thought it was going to be... I was concerned because it looks like it might be complex, but it was definitely just something I built up in my mind. The only challenge for me was staying untangled when I had four balls of yarn going hat once at one point. But I found working at a table (instead of my usual place on the couch) helped me stay more organized because I could keep the yarn separated a bit better.

    I love your review of this yarn but I’m confused about what your referring to about the spinning oil? Do your mean the bit of lanolin left in yarn when scoured so it retains some of the natural water repellent nature of wool?

  • @thomasalbright1909
    @thomasalbright1909 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Would you please do a review of Noble, when you get the chance? Thanks :)!

      It’s on my list! I have some others I will likely talk about first, so I can’t make promises about the timing 🙂

  • @pamelas9
    @pamelas9 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    As a spinner I'm thrown by your repeated "spinning oil" assertion. Are you talking about the natural lanolin? The only oil in spinning never touches the fiber. Hard to take you as an expert with this tbh.

    Great podcast again. Just wondering why your podcast is so choppy? Every few seconds it jumps. Is that your internet?
    Great job....keep going.

    • @DrowninginYarn
      @DrowninginYarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Gail! Thank you for the compliment! As a peek into my process, I typically create an outline of all of the things that I want to say and revise it to make sure I’m covering all of the bases and staying well on topic. Unfortunately, when I’m recording I stray often or I stop to think or trip over my words. Haha. Because I do this as a hobby outside of my 9-5 and it is very time consuming to make these videos, I often don’t have the extra time to do multiple takes.... most weeks, I start planning during the week, record on Friday and then spend anywhere from 6-12 hours over the weekend editing and getting additional footage before I post the videos (... I’m kind of slow at doing all of this, to be fair). Unfortunately, because I don’t have time to do multiple takes to make sure I get the words just right (which would help cut down on the jump cuts), I often cut out a lot of empty space in the videos so that I can keep the time down and have a focused, well-organized end product. I know that others have a more natural style to their videos where they leave it all in and make it more conversational, but my vision is to have more succinct content where I have a bit more control over the presentation. I hope that makes sense, and I really appreciate you watching! :-)
