I actually grew up on Luther Vandross's remake of this song which came a decade after. I found out much later that Stevie was the originator. Luther added alot of great changes and iconic vocal play but I prefer this version.

There are so many truly wondrous Wonder songs. The 70s were, indeed, a golden time in music. With "Creepin..." lyrically, Stevie made thoughts of fantasy & wet dreams sound softly tempting. The late great Minnie Riperton adding her luscious vocals to Stevie's already lovely composition made it an aural slice of Heaven. Obviously you would dig this one. What more is left to say... but WOW?! BTW: "Free" was sang by Deniece Williams (but she & Minnie had a similar sound).

I recall listening to this in headphones back in the day, & trippin on that background vocal, how distinctly sensual Minnie Ripperton sounded, even her breathing on the part, ‘Why does it seem…& So let it be…’ She was sooo special as an individual personality that we didn’t often get to see. You can see where Mya gets her vibrant personality. Minnie was just loving, warm, funny, & spontaneous. She was comfortable being interviewed etc. Donna Summer was like that too. Both gone too soon. If you check appearances, whether on Soul Train, Mike Douglas show, whatever, a lot of 70’s artist seemed rather timid & not particularly comfortable being interviewed on t.v., whether J5 or Chaka Kahn, & many more. Some of the icons handled it cool & were easily at home, like Stevie, Marvin, James Brown, Gladys Knight, Sly Stone. On another note, Stevie’s harmonica solo is golden! So expressive & relevant to the song. The J5 sang back up on You Haven’t Done Nothin. Michael did sing background on All I Do from Stevie’s Hotter Tham July album, another masterpiece. Whew! Long winded, my bad. 👍

Creepin' is one of Stevie Wonder's most melodically appealing non-hit singles. Muted synths and nocturnal Fender Rhodes give the song a smoky atmosphere that envelops you completely. The piece, written and composed by Wonder, is a fine specimen of jazz-tinted R&B at its very best, with the artist and guest Minnie Riperton filling the sonic plane with tight harmonies and thickly layered chorales. Simply amazing!

Stevie Wonder plays all the instruments himself on “Creepin'”. The background vocalist is Minnie Riperton, famous for having a vocal range of more than 5 octaves and also one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer from which she died in 1979.

I think that might have been Deniece Williams ("Free")singing background vocals or Minnie Riperton ("Loving you"). They both were background singers for Stevie back in the day. That's what was so good about albums back in the day...you can read the credits & find out musicians, songwriters, background vocalists, etc. Also, Luther Vandross covered this song, and does a great job with it.

As you talk about the artwork of the album, The cover artwork for “Fulfillingness’ First Finale” tells a story of the past, but also predicts what may lie ahead.
The cover design was done by a man named Robert Gleason, and the front depicts a staircase of keyboards going up into the sky. Stevie Wonder himself is standing on one of the steps, symbolizing the present day. Just like the album title says, Wonder has now reached a place of fulfillment, culminating with this album. But this is only a “first finale”, suggesting that it is by no means a final destination, and that many more finales are waiting up ahead. The African animals are a reminder of Wonder’s origin, and the Taurus is his zodiac. In 1973, while working on the album, Wonder sustained severe head injuries in an auto accident. This is depicted through a heavy log sticking out of the broken window of the red car. Right next to the “Little Stevie Wonder” there is a girl holding coloured balloons, and the four grammophones each represent an album (this was Stevie Wonder’s fourth Motown album with full artistic control).

I think Stevie might be a top five all time talent, and songs like this are why. He has a swack - maybe a swack and a half - of monster hits and then all sorts of other songs that fill up his albums but aren’t recognised nearly as much. And then all those songs he wrote that other people had huge hits with. Tears of a Clown - that’s him (and others, ok), just sayin.’
